Gun Owners in Indiana prefer Clinton 61% to Obama 39%
Indiana exit poll, page 2

Gun Owner in Household? 49% said “Yes”. Of those 61% voted Clinton and 39% voted Obama

The electorate is about 200 million and about 122 million voted in 2004.

About 80 million of the electorate own firearms.

Both HC and BO have a history of supporting banning semiautomatic firearms and handguns.

Of the two, recent exit polls for Dem primaries show gun owners prefer Clinton over Obama.

17. Factions of the Democratic party say that, there are also those of us .......
who understand that it's a pointless amendment.

It's no mistake that the US has the most liberal gun laws for an industrialized nation and we also have the highest violent crime rates associated with guns.

19. Pointless? SCOTUS will almost certainly rule in D.C. v. Heller that the 2nd protects an individual
right.

24. The Democratic party does not have an official position on guns. To say that it ...........
does is ignorant. The Democratic party is not about blind following of a platform, that's what the rethug party is for. We're the party of critical thinkers who can rationalize and come to our own conclusions.

You want non-regulation? Go join the NRA and the rethugs.

25. The Dem Party's official position is in its 2004 platform. Please visit the link below and read it.
It says "We will protect Americans' Second Amendment right to own firearms, and we will keep guns out of the hands of criminals and terrorists by fighting gun crime, reauthorizing the assault weapons ban, and closing the gun show loophole, as President Bush proposed and failed to do."

26. That's the platform that Kerry put forward, but it doesn't represent the party as a whole..........
We're not a black and white party. The nominee sets the platform for the election, but it's not a set in stone and line up behind us type of platform.

27. Regardless of your opinion, the Dem Platform is the official position of the party. I'm confident
that plank will not be changed and may be rewritten to be more pro-RKBA after SCOTUS rules in D.C. v. Heller to be released in June.

Those in the Dem Party who wish to ban handguns or semiautomatic firearms or all firearms will just have to live with the Dem Party in its support for all natural, inherent, inalienable rights rather that excluding RKBA.

28. The platform will be rewritten with the new nominee. In all honesty, I think the SC will uphold ...
the law in D.C.

Second, we don't have to live with it. We can fight back against it and change the platform. If you try and silence the anti-gun supporters of the Democratic party, you'll just end up pushing them off to another party that is anti-gun.

I'm not out to silence those that support guns, but I don't want those that support guns to silence me either.

31. I've read all the briefs submitted for D.C. v. Heller and the transcripts of the presentation. IMO
SCOTUS will decided in favor of Heller and that became an almost certainty when SCOTUS posed the question as:

"Whether the following provisions—D.C. Code §§ 7-2502.02(a)(4), 22-4504(a), and 7-2507.02—violate the Second Amendment rights of individuals who are not affiliated with any state-regulated militia, but who wish to keep handguns and other fire-arms for private use in their homes?"

7. Which indicates that these aren't single-issue voters.
Obama is the only one of the Democratic candidates who's said the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right rather than a collective one (subject to sensible regulation), which is something that those gun owners would probably take into consideration if they were aware of it.

18. Obama supported bans on semiautomatic firearms and handguns. Many of the 80 million gun owners will
not forget that unless he promises to veto every bill that comes to him as president that infringes upon the natural, inherent, inalienable right of law-abiding citizens to keep and bear arms for self-defense.

23. This is one area...
Edited on Tue May-06-08 08:27 PM by Spider Jerusalem
where individual jurisdictions should be able to set policy rather than having it come from the federal level; a gun law that makes sense for a city like DC, or Chicago, or Baltimore, doesn't make sense when you're talking about rural areas. And it's just nonsensical to try to tie rural firearms owners to urban gun violence. And no-one promoting gun control as a solution to the problem of violence seems to be willing to address the fact gun control, in and of itself, does nothing to address the underlying social causes of violence and crime (poverty, lack of economic and educational opportunity, etc).
