Obama says Clinton's gas tax relief plan symbolizes a candidacy of phony ideas
Obama fires back...

http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2008/05/04/america/NA-POL-US-Elections.php

INDIANAPOLIS: Barack Obama sharpened his attacks on rival Hillary Rodham Clinton as he made a pitch for support from working-class voters who could decide the outcome of this week's critical primaries in Indiana and North Carolina...

Campaigning in Indianapolis, Obama said Clinton's support for a summertime break from the federal gasoline tax symbolizes a candidacy consisting of "phony ideas, calculated to win elections instead of actually solving problems."...

...The gasoline tax issue has emerged as a key dividing line.

Both candidates are airing ads on the issue, and Obama said in his speech that Clinton "had to send a surrogate to speak out on behalf of this plan and all she could find — get this, a lobbyist from Shell oil to explain how this was going to be good for consumers."...

1. IT is a gimic
It comes at the voter from two different directions, taxes and gas prices, whuile doing nothing in the way of relief and giving the oil companies a windfall.

12. Big oil wants her
To be the nominee, just like Bill O, Rush, Rove, and all the other republicans. They know it's the only chance McCain has to win, and they will do anything to help Hillary, even to go out and lie for her! The all know one thing that every American should also know by now. When it comes to a "windfall profit" tax Bush will "VETO" that bill. Once again Hillary is lying to the public in order to gain votes!

3. I liked what he said a few days ago about this........
he said the gas tax holiday was a gimmick. A way for politicians to appear to do something immediate to get votes while, in reality, they are doing nothing to accomplish real change!

He's right.....a gas tax holiday will do nothing to change anything....

Obama Backed Tempory Suspension of Gas Tax in Ill. Senate

Barack Obama has been blasting the temporary lifting of gas taxes as political gamesmanship and bad economic sense. He didn't always. While in the Illinois Senate, he woted for it.

Available on Lexis.com: Chicago Defender July 1, 2000,

While Gov. George H. Ryan signed legislation suspending Illinois' five percent sales tax on gasoline for six months and issued an executive order creating state monitoring teams, Mayor Richard M. Daley Thursday vowed to keep an eagle eye on gas prices in Chicago.

Where was Obama on the issue?

Senators Kimberly A. Lightford (D-4th) and Barack Obama (D-13th) said the bill gives customers needed temporary relief from high gas prices. "Gas retailers must post on each pump a statement that indicates that the state tax has been suspended and that this temporary elimination of the tax should be reflected in the price per gallon of gas," said Obama.

snip

says Obama voted for the temporary lifting of the tax three times in the State Senate.

Obama took a different view on the issue when he was an Illinois legislator, voting at least three times in favor of temporarily lifting the state's 5 percent sales tax on gasoline. The tax holiday was finally approved during a special session in June of 2000, when Illinois motorists were furious that gas prices had just topped $2 a gallon in Chicago.
During one debate, he joked that he wanted signs on gas pumps in his district to say, “Senator Obama reduced your gasoline prices.”

6. And his experience showed him it doesn't work!
Could it be? Can Obama's experience be more relevant than Clinton's?

13. 3 things: How can a state action say anything much about a federal one
2, How can a temporary measure be such a bad thing

3, How come he is gleefully attacking a democrat that is proposing an idea that lots of democratics probably would support? That is shift a tax burden for 3 months to companies making a killing? He has a political motive to call Hillary names over this, is that not clear to you?

15. Gas prices are not influenced purely
by supply and demand. I find it unlikely that market forces would change much as a result of this tax proposal.
