I was disturbed this past weekend when the stories begin to break about a possible plan by Homeland Security to postpone or cancel elections come November in light of a possible terrorist threat.
Understanding that this is a strange time we are living in, I am of the belief that little good can result from postponing our elections. In addition to opening the door for vote tampering, we would be suggesting that in a roundabout way, it is the terrorists whom are controlling the way we run our country. This I fear, is exactly what they wish to achieve.
Barring an absolutely dire situation, these elections need to happen. From the War of 1812, to the Civil War, to the Great Depression and World War II, the United States has managed to hold elections despite volatile circumstances.
Perhaps instead of a plan to cancel elections because of a terrorist threat, we should work extra hard to curtail an event that would put us in this situation in the first place. I am urging you to work closely with your colleagues to ensure that all Americans have the opportunity to exercise their right to vote in a timely and safe manner.
I thank you for your time and service to our country.
