I Love the way the press is spinning this as a HUGE victory for Clinton
Edited on Wed Apr-23-08 01:09 AM by Rob Gregory Browne
when the truth is that this is ultimately a defeat. We ALL knew that Clinton was going to win this state. Sure, we had hopes that Obama might somehow pull it out, but the polls showed us that she basically had it sewn up.

But the defeat comes from the fact that until a couple weeks ago, she was twenty or more points ahead. Yet the media (and many Clinton supporters here) has conveniently forgotten this fact and is spinning this as the beginning of the end for Obama.

We have to remember, however, that the media wants this to go on forever. They are making huge ratings and a boat load of money off of this race. And the longer they can drag it out, the richer they get. So they tout Hillary's "momentum" as if it matters. The truth is, she'd better have the best momentum since Nixon beat McGovern, because unless she has OVERWHELMING victories in every single one of the remaining primaries, she will not be the nominee.

I truly feel for you Clinton supporters. You want her to win so badly that you're blinded to the sheer impossibility of it. And that's completely understandable. I'd probably feel the same way if Obama were in her position ---

Oh, wait. No I wouldn't. Because if Obama were in her position, he would have been forced to drop out by now.

4. Let it be. Who cares if the MSM is spinning it? Today is a great day,
Yes great. Out of all the noise of her wining, the mathematical reality is now even more of a grim.

She lost today in my book. I admit I wanted a moral victory too. But the realistic victory suffices.

6. Easy to understand.
Most people are not like we folks on DU. Most people don't understand the subtle distinction between a big win and a small win, simply because they haven't been watching the polls, and they are completely unaware of the earlier 20-point expectations. The result was simply a "win" for Clinton, because in order for it to be anything less, the media would have to explain the prior expectations to their readers and viewers, and average media consumers do not have the attention span for that sort of nuance.

So to dumb it down they simply say "She won. End of story."

22. Essentially, yes, it does.
I'm sorry that you don't quite understand how primaries work, but Hillary had to win BIG to snatch the nomination, and has to continue to win big in the remaining primaries. There's just no way she can do that.

I'm not spinning this as a WIN for Obama. I don't have to.

I have done enough for the Democratic Party over the years that I understand the primary process. I don't know you. You are a non-donating newbie, with whom I have no history. I do not know if you are a troll or a freeper. She can go on til the end of this process but even she knows she can't win.

If the SDs overturn the will of the voters, pledged, states won, caucuses won, popular vote and hand Clinton the nomination... I am no longer a Democrat.

2 weeks from now MSNBC could either be airing Lockup:San Quentin for the 200th time, or a big presidential primary night.

Which do you think they want to air? What side do you think they'll come down on.

36. Yes, I would. Because he was twenty points behind two weeks agoand not expected to win at all.
Plus, it would have ended this charade once and for all. Now, unfortunately, Hillary will drag this thing along longer. As I said above, if the situation were reversed, Obama would have been forced to withdraw, and Clinton supporters would be the first to demand it.

Edited on Wed Apr-23-08 01:29 AM by truedelphi
While interviewing her opponent in Nov 2006.

Debra had ALREADY WON! But that didn't stop the media from acting like she'd never ever get to be the Secreatry of State.

The media is nothing but CIA influenced operatives.

They get paid beaucoup bucks for being mannequins with moving mouths and the words of the Corporate Masters spinning from their lizard tongures.

29. Hillary actually lost ground tonight.
Yes, she picked up about 10 delegates. But having nearly 160 delegates pulled off of the table more than negates that. She actually has to win a higher percentage of the remaining delegates now than was the case yesterday.

30. I love that some people here thought it wouldn't be spun as a huge victory
The emphasis on margin was overdone. A loss in a state like this automatically serves up the question of Obama vulnerability in pivotal states. MSNBC was desperately clinging to the margin theme tonight, while other networks were properly deciphering the impact.

MSNBC is truly comical. Matthews was claiming the biggest question in the race is whether Bill and Hillary want Obama to win in November, if he's the nominee. Smack in the middle of the night, while other pundits are examining demographics and relevant material, and he summons that.

Tomorrow I'm sure Olbermann and MSNBC will be desperate to emphasize the declining margin of victory, after the networks signed off. Safest bet on the planet.
