26. The *real* third-rail of politics

The *real* third-rail of politics

by Markos (Dailykos) Moulitsas April 17, 2008

Blogger One Drop makes a spot-on observation:

Don't let all of the blathering about which candidates are "elitist" or "out of touch" distract you from the real significance of "Bittergate." The issue isn't really that Obama talked about people who "cling" to guns or religion. The issue is that he got too close to the real Third Rail of politics.

Social Security is not the Third Rail, no matter what the media tells you. No, the Third Rail is economic class. Try talking about income disparity in America, what do you get? "You're engaging in class warfare!" The same cries of protest are sounded whenever one suggests that the Bush tax cuts were mostly aimed at the wealthy, or that doing away with the estate tax was only beneficial to something like the top 1% of Americans. No, we musn't talk about the working class or the middle class getting a raw deal economically. In other words, we musn't criticize the real elites in this country, namely the wealthy and the politically connected.

Absofuckinglutely. That's why Jim Webb gave the political class palpitations when he wrote this in the WSJ shortly after winning, when the idiot pundit class was still proclaiming him a "conservative" Democrat.

The most important--and unfortunately the least debated--issue in politics today is our society's steady drift toward a class-based system, the likes of which we have not seen since the 19th century. America's top tier has grown infinitely richer and more removed over the past 25 years. It is not unfair to say that they are literally living in a different country. Few among them send their children to public schools; fewer still send their loved ones to fight our wars. They own most of our stocks, making the stock market an unreliable indicator of the economic health of working people. The top 1% now takes in an astounding 16% of national income, up from 8% in 1980. The tax codes protect them, just as they protect corporate America, through a vast system of loopholes <...>

….Needless to say, even the idiot pundits dropped the "conservative Democrat" schtick after that piece, and follow-up performances on cable TV and radio reinforcing that point.
Webb is a rare breed in Congress -- one of the few elected officials who can make this sort of argument and not get purged into immediate irrelevancy by the political and media gatekeepers. Now, thanks to this "bitter" nonsense, Obama can make these arguments as well.
That's why this issue is a net positive for us. Sure, Clinton has chosen her side, and it's of the corporatist status quo. That's no surprise. There's a reason she's in the leadership of the DLC. She may think that economically distressed Americans are "optimistic" and "resilient" and oh-so freakin' happy to lose their jobs and face few economic opportunities. All she's had to do is throw in a nice dose of San Francisco bashing (you know, the place where those gays live!), and her message is now indistinguishable from John McCain or Sean Hannity.

This is hilarious:

Romney is such a boot licker for McCain. I can just picture him bouncing in his seat and waving his arms: "OOH! PICK ME! PICK ME! PICK ME FOR VP!"

Wall Street Journal Analysis: This is a real shocker I’m sure many Americans are unaware of:
http://digg.com/2008_us_elections/The_Clinton_s_Terror_Pardons_Brutal_Killers_Freed_Why

Let's all try to give this fact one more final push across all of PA. Tim Russert and the Obama Campaign has tried to get HRC to answer for her failure to deliver on her promise. This is the story that voters in PA should be concerned about because upstate NY is so similar to many parts of PA. None of Clinton’s $400 million in pork went to the communities that needed it. She gave it all to her rich friends in NYC who stuffed her her campaign coffers:

THIS is what she REALLY thinks about all the hard working people in this country! Anyone who believes otherwise just hasn't been paying attention:

33. DNC Super Delegate Reggie Whitten endorses Obama (OK)
Chicago, IL - Today, Oklahoma Superdelegate Reggie Whitten endorsed Barack Obama, citing his ability to unite Americans for change and his proven track record of standing up for middle class families and workers.

His statement regarding the endorsement is below:

“I have decided to endorse Senator Barack Obama and will work wholeheartedly to see him become the next President of the United States. Some say there is no particular need to endorse at the present time. However, I believe this is a defining moment, not only for our Party, but also more importantly for our country. Therefore, I made the decision to commit now.

Breaking News: Thomas Backs Obama
You heard it here first. Council member and newly elected superdelegate Harry Thomas Jr., initially a supporter of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, is announcing in minutes that he will cast his vote at the Democratic National Convention in Denver for Sen. Barack Obama.

Thomas received more than 100 phone calls and e-mails from constituents who feared that he would use his power as a superdelegate to vote for Clinton despite the city's overwhelming support of Obama in the Potomac Primary.

"After meeting with the candidates and listening to my constituents, I have to honor the 83 percent who support Barack Obama," he said in an interview, referring to the results of the Democratic primary.

Thomas will make the announcement at 10 p.m. at a debate watch party.

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana congressman and Democratic superdelegate Andre Carson is endorsing Sen. Barack Obama for president.

Carson is the first of Indiana’s five U.S. House Democrats to announce support for a presidential candidate. Superdelegates could determine who gets the nomination in the tight race between Obama and New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Watt: Reminds him of Gantt race
Submitted by ryanteaguebeckwith on April 16, 2008 - 1:53pm.

U.S. Rep. Mel Watt said that the presidential campaign reminds him of the Harvey Gantt race.

The Charlotte Democrat, who served as campaign manager for Gantt's 1990 bid against U.S. Sen. Jesse Helms, said in a conference call today that Gantt almost won that year.

"This campaign has some of those same racial dynamics — those same kind of interesting dynamics that don't coincide with every single campaign that we've had," he said in a conference call about his endorsement of Barack Obama.

Asked later to further explain his remarks, Watt said that "to stick our head in the sand and not acknowledge that would be to ignore the obvious."

44. REP David Price Super Delegate Obama (NC)
U.S. Rep. David Price says Barack Obama can "change the equation."

In a conference call this afternoon, the Chapel Hill Democrat said that he was endorsing Obama because he can help bring independent voters in North Carolina to the Democratic column in November.

"With Barack Obama as our nominee, I believe we can turn North Carolina blue this year," Price said.

He also said he supports Obama's approach to the Iraq war, the use of security contractors by the U.S. military and the economy. He said Obama would also be in the "strongest position" to announce to the world "a new day in American diplomacy."

He said Obama would help "transcend the conflicts and resentments of the past" and energize a new generation of voters.

17. The Colbert Wars
The Colbert Wars

Just when I thought I was about to settle in for a Colbert Report with Hillary Clinton as the guest, Stephen Colbert hits me with an additional trifecta of political force: Representative Patrick Murphy, Senator John Edwards, and Barack Obama himself. If it was supposed to be Clinton's night, it sure didn't end up that way.

snip//

And that's when Colbert introduced the dreamy paratrooper-cum-congressman Patrick Murphy--who wasted no time endorsing Obama. "He's the most inspirational leader I've ever met in my life," said the white, male Pennsylvanian. And what did Murphy have to say about Clinton? She's a "very capable woman." Oof. But then, just in case we all thought that the Clinton cameo was too much of a sop, Colbert says that Murphy should like Clinton; after all, "you volunteered to go to war, and she volunteered to vote to send you there." Double Oof.

Next thing I know, Colbert says, "Politically he is no longer a factor to be reckoned with...," and introduces John Edwards, who delivers last night's “Word,” or rather, the “EdWords”--which included this gem: "No white male voter is being courted more aggressively than this guy." And, in three minutes, the son-of-a-mill-worker seems to be doing everything he can to remind me that he was the best candidate in the race, and that health care and poverty matter, not lapel pins or sniper fire. Of course, the sneaky bugger doesn't endorse just yet; I guess he's still waiting to learn more about the candidates (don't all primary races go until June?).

So over all, Clinton's appearance is upstaged by the golden-boys twin set: one of whom has explicitly endorsed her opponent, and the other of whom has managed to say something earnest about real issues and be funny at the same time. Suddenly, Clinton's "Call me!" walk-on is looking a touch, um, weak. Which is why it's almost too much when Barack Obama appears on screen to chat with Colbert. And what does Obama do? He puts manufactured issues and political distractions "on notice." With a little help from Colbert, "distractions" are now lower than dirt--you know, distractions like the Clinton camp accusing Obama of plagerizing and talking to hippies.

When it comes to the Clinton cameo versus the Obama cameo, I think that Clinton’s bit was actually funnier; but that’s the battle not the war. As we used to say in law school (cough, cough, dropped out), it’s the totality of circumstances that make the case. And, last night, in the court of Colbert, Obama was the victor.

Rockin' Philadelphia with Barack Obama
by PsiFighter37
Fri Apr 18, 2008 at 07:13:45 PM PDT

Alright, I just got back from Barack Obama's rally in downtown Philadelphia. I was at John Kerry's rally in University City back in 2004 - a campaign event that drew around 25,000 people. I also went to Kerry's event in Center City 8 days before the general election - it drew more around 100,000 people in Love Park.

Tonight's event with Barack Obama surpassed that. It may not have had as many people, but goddamn - the enthusiasm for the event was off the charts. I have been to many a campaign rally, but none like this.

Flag pin-gate

An unidentified citizen offers a free United States flag, bearing the label 'Made in China,' to protest the ABC News outside the ABC News television offices in Burbank, Calif. Friday, April 18, 2008. ABC News drew both record ratings and a heap of complaint about how ABC News moderators Charles Gibson and George Stephanopoulos conducted the Democratic presidential debate last April 16. Obama was asked about why he hasn't worn an American flag pin on his lapel, and his relationship with a former member of the Weather Underground.

9. The Dean 25 could decide Clinton's fate

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0408/9698_Page2.html

If, as Hillary Rodham Clinton has suggested, her campaign takes the fight to seat the Florida and Michigan delegations all the way to the Democratic National Convention this summer, the fate of her challenge is all but certain to hinge on 25 individuals appointed to the Credentials Committee by party Chairman Howard Dean.

The Credentials Committee, which also includes 161 members selected from the states based on primary and caucus results, is the 186-member body that will help determine whether to seat the two rogue delegations.

Since it appears virtually impossible for Clinton to win enough of the 161 members to vote out a “majority report” supporting her position — and it is unlikely that Barack Obama will win enough of them, either — the Dean 25 are in a position to hold the balance of power on a procedural matter that could play a pivotal role in deciding the Democratic presidential nomination.

Though these 25 appointees are often assumed to be handpicked Dean loyalists who will take their cues from him on the issue of seating Florida and Michigan, a Politico analysis has found that is far from certain. Many of the 25 are already publicly supporting either Clinton or Obama — and some are barely acquainted with Dean.

"It was important to Gov. Dean that the standing committees be diverse and be representative of the Democratic Party as a whole,” said Democratic National Committee press secretary Stacie Paxton. “He personally asked each nominee if they were prepared to do what’s in the best interest of the country and the Democratic Party before he made the appointment.”

What follows is Politico’s guide to the Dean 25, based on interviews with appointees and additional reporting.

16. Appointees that appear to support Clinton
Edited on Fri Apr-18-08 11:22 PM by grantcart
Dean has continued to be Bipartisan and appointed a number of Clinton Supporters:

Dean Aguillen
Background: Currently a lobbyist for Ogilvy Government Relations. Previously worked as an adviser to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and in the Clinton White House.
Dean Connection: Says he got a call from the DNC asking if he wanted to help out with the committee. He expects that Dean wants Democrats who are “loyal” and have “integrity.”
Hint: Donated at least $2,000 to Clinton. Doesn’t have a firm position on Michigan and Florida and says he’ll consider all sides.

Hartina Flournoy
Background: Assistant to the president of the American Federation of Teachers. Was finance director for the Gore for President campaign and deputy campaign manager for the Clinton-Gore reelection campaign. Also served on the Rules and Bylaws Committee.
Dean Connection: Befriended Dean during his presidential campaign. A major backer of his bid for the DNC chairmanship, she ran his transition team after he won.
Hint: A Clinton superdelegate who, according to ABC News, advised Clinton to push strategist Mark Penn out.

Maryscott “Scotty” Greenwood
Background: Managing director at McKenna Long & Aldridge’s Washington office. Served as Georgia Democratic Party’s executive director, worked on multiple presidential campaigns and was chief of staff of the Canadian Embassy under President Clinton.
Dean Connection: Gave $2,000 to Dean in 2003 and supported his race for DNC chairman. University of Vermont graduate.
Hint: Donated $2,300 to the Clinton campaign, “but I’m not declaring support for her over Obama in this credentials process.” Says family members have given to Obama. Refers to herself as “a Howard Dean person.”

Carol Juneau
Background: Montana state senator. Served in the state House for a decade and in various state party positions.
Dean Connection: Unclear.
Hint: Hosted a fundraiser for Clinton in Missoula. “She’s been my choice since the beginning,” Juneau told the Helena Independent Record last week. “She has a strong Native American platform.”

Maria Neira
Background: New York State United Teachers official and a vice president of the American Federation of Teachers. Served on former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s educational transition team.
Dean Connection: Works with Dean confidante Tina Flournoy. Gave $250 to Kerry in the first quarter of 2004.
Hint: She’s a pledged delegate for Clinton from New York’s 21st congressional district.

Carol Pensky
Background: Founder of the DNC’s Women’s Leadership Forum. Served as a DNC treasurer in the late 1990s and as a finance chairwoman in 2000.
Dean Connection: Donated $1,850 to Dean in 2004, more than she gave to Kerry or Wesley Clark.
Hint: A pro-Clinton superdelegate, she has donated $4,600 to her campaign.

Michael Steed
Background: Managing director at the Paladin Capital Group. Served as DNC executive director in the early 1980s. Donated $34,500 to the party in 2004.
Dean Connection: Unclear. Donated $2000 to the campaigns of Bob Graham and Dick Gephardt in 2004.
Hint: Donated $4,600 to Clinton.

Bill Straus
Background: Massachusetts state representative.
Dean Connection: Endorsed Dean in 2004, and donated $1,900 to his campaign. Dean’s Democracy for America political action committee raised funds for Straus in June 2004.
Hint: Donated $1,375 to the Clinton campaign.

Hint: Endorsed Obama.

Allyn Brooks-LaSure
Background: Director of media relations for the Save Darfur Coalition. Worked as a spokesman for Sen. Robert Menendez and Gov. Jon Corzine, both of New Jersey.
Dean Connection: Says he had “no previous relationship” with the DNC chairman when Leah Daughtry, a top Dean aide, called and asked if he was willing to serve on the committee.
Hint: Donated $500 to Barack Obama (under the name Michael Brooks-LaSure) but says he sees “a separation there between my role” as a member of the Credentials Committee and his support for Obama. The challenge for the DNC, he says, will be “reconciling the rules as well as the importance of Florida and Michigan.”

Sheila Dixon
Background: Baltimore mayor.
Dean Connection: Unclear.
Hint: Endorsed Obama.

Christopher Edley Jr.

94. Take Back Control of Debates From the Networks
Take Back Control of Debates From the Networks
Rob Kall, Editor of OpEdNews April 18, 2008

How About Debate Integrity... and taking Control Back From the Networks? It's time for the major parties to refuse to allow the networks to plan, script and program debates. They've made it clear they are incapable of doing what's best for Americans, for democracy.

The ABC Gibson-Stephanopolous debate was, perhaps more than anything else, a profound insult to Americans. The failure of ABC's leadership up and down the corporate ladder makes it clear that the network no longer has the right or privilege to call the shots on the contents or script for a debate. Other networks have not done much better with their "gotcha" questions and their agenda of catching soundbytes for later use against candidates.

The state of presidential debates has hit such lows it is no longer acceptable for the networks to determine what questions are asked. The fact that Stephanopolous so transparently replicated right wing screed-meister Sean Hannity's suggested question is unpardonable. The fact that Stephanopolous was given a job by Clinton's husband is unpardonable.

The answer is to set some standards for debates. It's time to remove the fake, media created issues from debates. It may be that some campaign strategists put the dirt and attacks on character, history and personality out there. It may be that candidates do it, but that does not mean this has to come up in debates. Debates should be forums where candidates define and make clear who they are and where they stand on issues.

....I've written that the Dems should literally refuse to appear on FOX. They actually did it during the primary season. I think it was the right thing to do. The Dems, at the least, need to do the same thing to ALL the networks, set standards where the control of the debate, even the use of camera shots of the audience, which ABC used in a biased way, only showing Clinton people, is determined based on pre-arranged rules. IF they do that, it may even work to allow FOX to broadcast a debate. But they won't be running it. A network should never, ever again run a presidential debate again. They've shown they are unable to do the job that we the people deserve.

Barack Obama flips the monster off, they say... The bird is the word... An illustrated lesson in flipping people off...

….This is NOT someone flipping the bird.

No, no, no. I don't care if you're so batshit crazyblind that you still think that was Barack Obama flipping Hillary Clinton off, it didn't really happen. Look again. Not a flip off.

Two fingers. Unless you're doing a two-hander, the flip off has one finger extended.

Having an itch is not the same as calling out Monster for being a bitch. Yes, that rhymes. Again, just in case you're half as delusional as the Taylor Marsh fan club who has been pissing their Depends over this, it is not the bird. Let's compare to a real flip off one more time so you can see the difference.

Here are a list of people who are so far gone that they still don't get it. These are the freaky goofs who think Barack Obama flipped off Hillary Clinton. Sweet Baby Jesus flipping off the wise man who brought him myrrh, these people are beyond help. Know the stupid so that you don't accidentally take them seriously at some point in the future.

Garlin Guage wonders if Obama "overplayed his hand". I wonder if Garlin knows he's a dipshit?

The Tribunal Blog says it was "intentional" and draws a parallel with Obama's perspective on small town hicks. I say The Tribunal Blog is not rad, hip, cool or awsome .

Strategic Geography thinks Barry was giving the bird because "it is such an amorphous, non-committal, unmanly flip off, just like everything else in his campaign". StratGeo not only opines about that which is manly, he also writes a lot about Andrew Sullivan. Just sayin'...
…There are many others, but I want to mention just one more... The inimitable Ms. Taylor Marsh. She says it was "unmistakable". Unmistakable. God have mercy on her fucked up soul.

This is for all of them...

be awfully entertaining to watch.
It’ll be the ultimate fucktard cage match.
I’ve even come up with a name for it just in case it goes down: Sad Hacks Beyond Thunderdumb.
Or ... The End of the Blogosphere As We Know It.
Nothing can survive an onslaught of that much unrelenting dueling douchebaggery.

28. Oliver Willis: Hillary Clinton Attacks MoveOn
Hillary Clinton Attacks MoveOnPublished April 18, 2008 in Hillary Clinton.

Stick a fork in.

“Moveon.org endorsed — which is like a gusher of money that never seems to slow down,” Clinton said to a meeting of donors. “We have been less successful in caucuses because it brings out the activist base of the Democratic Party. MoveOn didn’t even want us to go into Afghanistan. I mean, that’s what we’re dealing with. And you know they turn out in great numbers. And they are very driven by their view of our positions, and it’s primarily national security and foreign policy that drives them. I don’t agree with them. They know I don’t agree with them. So they flood into these caucuses and dominate them and really intimidate people who actually show up to support me.”

You don’t become the nominee of the Democratic/progressive movement by undercutting the Democratic/progressive movement.

Hillary Clinton, meet karma... It's a bitch (too)...
Instant Karma's gonna get you,
Gonna knock you right on the head,
You better get yourself together,
Pretty soon you're gonna be --

Whoops, Monster, it's already here.

Bad idea: Running around attacking your opponent for a whiny attitude and elitism right before you get busted making excuses for losses and claiming that a core part of your party's support comes from crazed activists who don't represent your old-school approach.

Worse idea: Coming right out and saying that a huge bloc of your party consists of crazy thugs who overrun caucuses and intimidate people.

Even worse idea: Fibbing about that bloc's positions on major issues and contradicting your earlier statements to said organization when it happens to have a rocket-fast response rate and the ability to contact membership via emails, etc. within seconds. The part about betraying your own "back in the day" stuff isn't too bright, either.

Worst idea: When that organization you're bitching about started as a means of saving your husband's political viability (and, thus, by extension your own).

Philadelphia suburbs hold key to Pa. primary
By JIM KUHNHENN – 5 hours ago

MEDIA, Pa. (AP) — Take the Chester exit of I-95 and wend your way to the Pennsylvania Turnpike. If Barack Obama has any chance of cultivating an upset on April 22, this 20-mile stretch is fertile land.

These are Philadelphia's western suburbs — a patchwork of charming small towns, elite colleges and working class neighborhoods that constitute one of the most competitive political battlegrounds in the state.

"It is, without question, right at the center of the fight for Pennsylvania," said Rep Joe Sestak, D-Pa., the retired admiral who represents this district and who has endorsed Obama's rival, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton. "How my district goes is how the state may go."

Clinton holds a lead in statewide polls. But Obama is strongly favored in Philadelphia and surveys show him holding a slight lead in the arc of four increasingly Democratic counties around the city. Delaware County, the one which makes up most of Sestak's 7th congressional district, is his toughest with demographics that also suit Clinton and her blue collar appeal.

39. Obama greeted by largest crowd of his campaign (35,000)
Obama greeted by largest crowd of his campaign
April 18, 2008 AP News

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Barack Obama was greeted by the largest crowd of his campaign Friday night in Philadelphia. Some 35,000 people jammed into Independence Park to see the Democratic presidential candidate, four days before this state's crucial April 22 primary.
Frank Friel, director of security at the Independence Visitor Center, made the official estimate.
The crowd exceed the 30,000 who greeted Obama and Oprah Winfrey in December in Columbia, S.C.
Obama told the crowd the United States is at a crucial moment in its history, much like what the founding fathers faced in Philadelphia.

"It was over 200 years ago that a group of patriots gathered in this city to do something that no one in the world believed they could do," Obama said. "After years of a government that didn't listen to them, or speak for them, or represent their hopes and their dreams, a few humble colonists came to Philadelphia to declare their independence from the tyranny of the British throne."

42. ACTION - things you can do to help this week

Last night I posted a call to action after one of the most unfair and uninformative debates ever. It got a overwhelming response and tons of donations poured in. But we can't just do that for one night. We have primaries to win still and we need to keep the focus on action up.

We still need to be taking action.
Calling voters in PA.
Traveling to PA for GOTV.
Donating to the campaign so they have the resources to win.

Doing whatever you can.

And so I bring you the third day of Obama Action Week.

To get you all fired up and ready to go here is a fantastic video I have just stumbled upon. It isn't emending very well but if you want to see it a bit clearer then go here. I think that video captures very well the spirit of this grassroots campaign. It is well worth 10 minutes of your time. Another one of my favorite and inspiring videos from this campaign is the amazing story of Joshua Stroman. I think those videos are really representative of the amazing enthusiasm and grassroots energy we have seen in this campaign. It is Obama's Army, or as I like to call it, his Machinery of Hope, that has gotten us this far. That's us.

We have gotten him from here:

To where we are today. Millions strong. No one would have guessed we would come this far but we've proved them wrong. And that's why the talking heads are on the attack. But we will see worse then this. This is just the Democratic primary. After that comes the general election were we will face John McSame and the same kind of Karl Rove style-swift boating that they always give us. But worse. We will have to fight back again and again. But we are going to do that by taking action. Knocking on doors. Calling people. Donating. Organizing. Traveling. We will fight back and we will take this country back for the people. That is the long term goal. But we need to take it day by day and the next short term focus that we have is Pennsylvania. It would take a miracle to win but we have done it before, the least we can do is keep it close. Let's make it happen. Hit the phones. Hit the road. Hit the donate button.

If you're walking down the right path and you're willing to keep walking, eventually you'll make progress. - Barack Obama
Yes. We. Can. MAKE CALLS - TRAVEL - DONATE

45. Important Questions For George Stephanopoulos To Ask John McCain This Sunday
Do you agree with Pastor John Hagee that war with Iran is the fulfillment of biblical prophecy? What is your religion, and has the answer in the past changed as the South Carolina primary approached?

Important Questions For George Stephanopoulos To Ask John McCain This Sunday

Cliff Schecter, Huff Po 04.18.2008

Many have already pored over the ins and outs of a Democratic debate tailor-made for "Enquiring minds" earlier this week on ABC. Well guess who just happens to be coming to dinner...or This Week, this weekend?

Why none other than John McCain!

So in the spirit of seeing how all the candidates deal with "scandal," or just being queried about everyone they have associated with since that 6th grade teacher who crossed the street against a red light (do you denounce her Senator Obama? Denounce and reject her!?! Or perhaps just reject?), here are some questions that John McCain should be asked on your show this weekend, Mr. Stephanopoulos (sorry, old habit from when I had you as a professor at Columbia).

First a great list I came across, and then a few of my own I found in my research for my book The Real McCain. This list is from Perrspectives, a fantastic compilation, in my always humble opinion:

48. TIME'S RUNNING OUT Clinton's Odds: Time And Delegate Math Not In Her Favor

TIME'S RUNNING OUT

Clinton's Odds: Time And Delegate Math Not In Her FavorApril 18, 2008

The calls are growing again for Hillary Clinton to recognize that her mathematical chances for winning the democratic nomination are low to none.

The AP just came out with an article that lays out the case, "Analysis: Time, Delegate Math Working Against Clinton."

Time is running out on Hillary Rodham Clinton, the long-ago front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination who now trails Barack Obama in delegates, states won and popular votes.
Compounding Clinton's woes, Obama appears on track to finish the primary campaign fewer than 100 delegates shy of the 2,025 needed to win.

DNC Chief Howard Dean's statements Thursday that superdelegates need to start making up their minds "now," doesn't bode well for Clinton either. Clinton supporters shot back against Dean today in an interview with TPM's Greg Sargent:

49. More Idiocy From the Clinton Campaign

More Idiocy From the Clinton Campaign

John Cole at Balloon Juice

Via TPM, Hillary:

We were both asked some pretty tough questions. That’s part of what happens in a debate and a campaign. And I know he spent all day yesterday complaining about the hard questions he was asked.

But you know, being asked tough questions in a debate is nothing like the pressures you face inside the White House. And in fact when the going gets tough you can’t just walk away…

I think we need a president who can take whatever comes your way.

I willingly concede that should we have a national crisis in which the President is confronted with the threat of hundreds of reporters questioning his/her use of lapel pins, then Hillary is who I want to confront that problem.

For every other crisis, I choose Obama. Hillary is turning into a Saturday Night Live routine.

By the way, does some enterprising reader with video editing skills want to go through all of the Clinton campaign whining about the media and splice it all together in one montage. I would recommend starting with the kvetch about being asked questions first in the debate and go from there. Have fun.

85. Zogby discusses PA polling, and which voters prefer Hillary or Obama
This is a fascinating interview, I'll share a snip of the part that
I liked the best:

John Zogby Polls Pennsylvania's Primary --
Interview
Bill Steigerwald 4/18/2008

....(on page 2)

Q: Can you describe the demographics of voters that Clinton's most popular among?

A: Sure. She does very, very well in small-town rural. She does very well among white voters in the big cities -- in the cities themselves. She does well among liberals and particularly among Catholics. She does hugely, or course, among Latinos. She has really just run the board among Latinos.

Q: And Obama’s strongest voter groups?

A: Solid African-American. Huge among young voters, then all voters under 60, but particularly voters under 30; very liberal in terms of ideology; urban and suburban liberals in the eastern part of the state, for sure, and for the most part in the Pittsburgh region as well.

Q: Which voting group has Obama been attracting that has enabled him to close this gap with Hillary?

A: What it is, mainly, are middle-class white voters who lean liberal. In this instance, socially liberal; and younger -- meaning second- and third-generation ethnic; higher income -- $75,000 a year or more. That’s allowed him to cut into her lead just enough, along with 88 percent of African-Americans and the nearly 70 percent of voters under 30 that he gets; college-educated as well.

Q: Did Obama’s comments about the “bitter voters” of the small towns of Pennsylvania end up hurting him significantly?

A: It’s counterintuitive. It certainly
hurt him among the punditry and hurt him deeply among Republicans. That’s for sure. But in our poll we asked the following statement:

The list of super delegates can be found at DemConWatch. Generally, the super delegates consist mainly of nationally elected democrats and state and national DNC officials. List also includes major democratic statesmen no longer in office like Jimmy Carter, Al Gore, and George Mitchell, but not Nunn or Boren.

Obama Out of Touch With Pennsylvanians? Most Top Papers There Disagree

Published: April 19, 2008 10:55 AM ET

NEW YORK While Beltway pundits and others in the national press have alleged that Sen. Barack Obama is clearly out of touch with most Pennsylvanians, leading newspapers in the state seem to disagree.

In recent days he has picked up the endorsements of the vast majority of these papers in Pennsylvania.

Papers endorsing Obama include: The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Philadelphia Daily News, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Allentown Morning Call, The Patriot News of Harrisburg, the Scranton Times-Tribune and Bucks County Courier.

Hillary Clinton's endorsements have been far fewer, such as the Daily Pennsylvanian -- the University of Pennsylvania paper -- though more may appear on Sunday. The daily in Wilkes-Barre said it is not endorsing at all.

92. Jack Nicholson, White Men and Hillary Clinton
Jack Nicholson, White Men and Hillary Clinton

by Hargrove April 19, 2008

The Clinton race and gender strategy was commenced in earnest by Geraldine Ferraro and other Clinton surrogates, using racialized and gender laden words and antics.

The effect was to create a racially antagonistic, and female sympathetic landscape, ripe for overlaying with Bill Clinton's contrived "facts."

Bill's fictional creation is that African Americans are voting racially, codified in the phrase, African Americans are voting for Barack Obama because he is "an African American with a real chance to win." This was Bill's second attempt at codifying racial voting, the first was, African Americans were voting for Barack Obama, "for pride."

The claim of racialized voting, by African Americans, was made "real" by CNN, in a "report" in which two African American women claimed that they were being pressured to vote racially, without recounting one instance in which they were asked by anyone to do that. the only thing supporting this idea was a poem, one of the women received in an e-mail, from an unknown person, describing their emotions about voting for a black man for the presidency.

...The Clinton strategy is to replace Barack Obama's identity with a racial identity, thereby making him more vulnerable to lies and innuendos, that raise questions about his identity, and his character.

97. Limbaugh’s “Operation Chaos” Enters “Doomsday Phase” in Pennsylvania
Limbaugh’s “Operation Chaos” Enters “Doomsday Phase” in Pennsylvania
By Al Giordano

Democrats and members of the news media are in denial. They want to look the other way. To admit that nationally-syndicated right-wing talk radio host Rush Limbaugh is successfully changing the results of Democratic presidential primaries, organizing and urging his listeners to flood the vote for Senator Clinton, cuts against their dismissive talking points.

For years they have tried to wish Limbaugh - the top rated talk show host in the US - away. They’ve said he and his 13.5 million listeners (according to the Arbitron ratings service) “don’t matter.” (Does that phrase sound familiar in this election season?)

Democrats and liberal pundits have ideological motives for wanting to dismiss Limbaugh’s reach. “Mainstream” media outlets have the same disdain for talk radio hosts that they have for bloggers. The combination of the two makes for a classic case of the blind navigating for the blind, each convincing the other that they really can see.

Meanwhile, Limbaugh is out there five days a week marshalling his “Operation Chaos” troops: he urged them to register as Democrats in Pennsylvania before the March 24 deadline, and his “sleeper cells” are ready to go on Tuesday:

UPDATE I - Blue Girl- 7:45 p.m.

Okay - hat-tip to Jerry in comments - this is Father Michael Pfleger and he is one fiery lefty priest. He sees something he doesn't like, he does something about it. It is because of him that alcohol and tobacco are no longer advertised on billboards on Chicago's South Side. He is an activist priest in the finest Liberation Theology tradition.

Liberation Theology views Jesus not just as the Redeemer, but as the Liberator of the oppressed as well. My dad was a Catholic, and my husband, and son are Liberation Theology Catholics. I respect Catholics who follow that path. They don't say stuff - they do stuff.

Father Pfleger has been the priest at St. Sabina's Catholic Church in the Auburn Gresham Neighborhood of Chicago since 1981. Here is the church's contact information if you want to send a card or a note and maybe a check for the good works they obviously do. I have a few bucks left in the "Share the Love" fund, and his parish is getting a few of 'em.
