5 of largest papers in PA have endorsed Obama - latest is Harrisburg
Edited on Wed Apr-16-08 08:13 AM by JPZenger
5 of the top 10 largest newspapers in PA have endorsed Obama. The remaining large papers, when I checked 2 days ago, had not yet made an endorsement.

The latest is the Harrisburg Patriot-News, which is the largest paper in central PA and the 5th largest in the State

Another post has covered the endorsement of Obama by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, which is the second largest paper in PA:

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/08107/873625-192.stm

The largest paper in PA, the Philadelphia Inquirer, endorsed Obama back in January. The Morning Call in the Lehigh Valley in eastern PA is the 4th largest paper, endorsed Obama a few days ago. Likewise, the Times-Tribune of Scranton (the largest paper in northeast PA) endorsed Obama last week.

Here's excerpts of the Harrisburg Patriot-News endorsement:

"These differences are seen most strikingly in Obama, who comes across as very much the candidate of the future, while Clinton comes across as the candidate of the past. Obama offers real change in the White House, while Clinton offers more of what Americans are tired of in Washington. Obama offers the prospect of cooperation, while Clinton offers the virtual certainty of more confrontation and political gridlock.

... Obama has managed to transcend politics in a way that has attracted interest and enthusiasm from people across the political spectrum. And perhaps most impressive of all, he has won over young people and brought them into the discussion on a scale that may be unprecedented. It is amazing how many adults have said it was their kids who got them to take a deeper look at the Illinois senator.

That is a hopeful development. But it also is instructive. Young people are the future. And they see and sense something in Obama that coincides with their hopes and aspirations for themselves and for the kind of world they want to live in."

2. I'm betting Scaife's Tribune-Review will go for HRC - she is GOP lite
re lobbyists, special interests, etc., and in the recent Vanity Fair article about Dickie Scaife, Dickie said how much he admires Bill Clinton - pointed out that they both liked to womanize.

15. Inquirer is independent
The Phil Inquirer is now owned by local businessmen. The Harrisburg Paper is owned by Newhouse. The Scranton paper is owned by local people. I believe the Pittsburgh paper is locally owned.

18. Phil. Dems Ignore Hillary, She Ends Speech After 5 Minutes
http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2008/04/14/politics/fromtheroad/entry4014458.shtml

"Hillary Clinton was forced to cut her normal stump speech short when a chatty and meddlesome crowd kept her from grasping their attention. Clinton, who was addressing the Philadelphia County Democratic Party's Jefferson-Jackson Dinner, spoke for just over five minutes, despite having the press arrive almost two hours beforehand.

The crowd never settled down during her remarks. A spokesman for Clinton denied that she cut the speech short, and told reporters that Clinton was advised by her Pennsylvania team to deliver “a short speech" given the set up of the event.

In previous party dinners, most recently in Butte, Mt., Clinton spoke for almost an hour to a crowd that seemed to be paying attention...Whether or not Clinton’s reception at the dinner had anything to do with her recent attacks on Barack Obama remains unclear. Clinton has never delivered a formal speech in such a short amount of time. The most recent abbreviated speech was back on February 15 when Clinton spoke to a crowd at a Lockheed Martin plant in Akron, Ohio. The speech lasted for just 12 minutes, with the first applause line coming 11 minutes into the speech."
