Kerry/Cohen?
Just listened to Jim Vanderhei of the Washington Post outline the prospective VP picks. He points out that historically the names floated amost never get the nod. Asked for a longshot pick, he mentioned William Cohen.

Think about this:
1. name recognition
2. national security experience (former Sec. of Defense)
3. experience working in and with Congress (former Senator)
4. Republican (unity ticket) who has already worked in a Democratic administration
5. Jewish surname (father Jewish, mother Catholic - don't know what he practices)
6. beautiful African American wife
7. not terribly charismatic (won't overshadow Kerry)
8. just charismatic enough to campaign and do interviews

Of course - I still think Edwards is best.

And doesn't have a charismatic national presence to compensate for the lack of regional balance...why not take Clark who has both of those ?

7. No.....
He is also the man who acted like a spoiled, arrogant brat while in office with regard to Wes Clark. He's the one who arbitrarily fired him, basically just because he could, and he didn't like him. So I would be very disappointed if they chose him.

9. Don't trust him, don't want him
He's ok as far as moderate republicans go, but he was not a great Sec of Defense for Clinton. And I sure don't want to take the chance he becomes President some day.

10. No way. (1) He was a lousy SecDef, and
(2) He and Hugh Shelton tricked Clinton into signing Wes Clark's "early retirement" papers, an act which made the Big Dog so angry he told journalist Sid Blumenthal he "wanted to kill somebody" when he found out how he'd been bamboozled (& instead of committing mayhem, he promptly awarded Clark the nation's highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom).

NO FUCKING WAY Kerry is going to appoint this asshole and so thumb his nose at Clinton and Clark. No way.

13. When will everyone finally understand
that the only way a Republican will share the ticket with Kerry is if every single Democrat in the U.S. has dropped dead by the convention.

And I'm REALLY tired of suggesting the Dems ought to have a Repub VP as a gesture of unity when NO ONE is suggesting Cheney leave the ticket and some prominent Democrat join Bush.

From the very beginning bi-partisanship means one thing and one thing only to the Republicans: Do It My Way.

And William Cohen does not have as much name recognition out here in the hinterlands as Vanderhei thinks.

14. This sounds interesting. Very interesting.
I've seen him TV a couple of times. I don't think the name is recognizable to the general public, though. In fact, if you hadn't said who he was, I wouldn't have remembered him. That's not a good sign, is it? That I saw him speak a couple of times but couldn't remember his name?

In any case, on paper he looks pretty good.

18. Cohen is from Maine
Perhaps the location/significance of a vice president's home state should be a factor? Personally, I hope to see a VP who appeals to the battleground states and southern areas.

Besides knifing Clark in the back...he really jumped on Bush's band wagon after the election. He disgusted me then and he still does.
Just say no to Bill Cohen. Why do people keep suggesting we have a Rethug. on out ticket? Don't you think we have enough good Dems to win?

20. Terrible idea.
I don't get this fixation people have with putting a Republican on the ticket.

I never thought Republican SecDef was a very good idea either.
