In John McCain's remarks of the past few days, you could just hear him straining to come as close as possible to calling Obama an "uppity negro" -- without actually saying it.

But I guess McCain's surrogates don't have to be as careful. They can say what they mean -- overt racism and all -- and expect to get away with it.

The fact that this guy later apologized does not mean much. Clearly, the Republicans plan to play the race card here. Shame on them.
