OMFG! Hillary Clinton dissed San Francisco with her CNN retort about Obama's comment
Edited on Sun Apr-13-08 09:47 PM by zulchzulu
I don't have the video yet, but when asked about Obama' statement, she went out of her way to suggest that Obama was "elitist" because he was "in San Francisco" when he made the comment.

It appears she is playing RIGHT INTO the Repug perception that San Francisco = Ultra Liberal Snob.

I lived in SF for 10 years and that perception is actually pretty off from what goes on in San Francisco. There are a fair number of conservatives there, believe it or not. It was always hilarious to say you live in SF to somebody who was a Bushbot or worse.

Hillary is using Bill O'Lielly's lexicon on the perception of San Francisco.

ON EDIT:

From the transcript:

"Someone goes to a closed-door fund-raiser in San Francisco and makes comments that do seem elitist, out of touch and, frankly, patronizing. That has nothing to do with him being a good man or a man of faith."

The Inner Goldwater Girl shines through again.

She's going after the Republican base more aggressively than McCain.

8. I don't know why the media and others are focusing so much on the "bitter" part. ...
The real offense and long term damage is "...and they cling to guns, or religion, or antipathy toward people who aren't like them, or anti-immigrant sentiment, or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

The implication is that small town America is primarily populated by ignorant bigots.

that Republicans take advantage of people, who having giving up believing either party would fix the economic mess, use issues like gun control, abortion, and God, to pander to these people. They go to evangelicals and get their pastors to subtly suggest to it's congregation, vote Roe V. Wade, or they tell them how the devil democrats want to take God out of school and the country. They appeal to emotional things that way they're distracted enough when time to pass out hunks of money to their rich friends shows up on the agenda in Congress.

And deny it if you will, they vote on those things because they think that those issues might be addressed long before their economic problems will be. All he did was call them out on it, and you know what, people are desperate right now. The economy is getting worse by the day, and for that reason, they ARE seeing through the usual political garbage. This year they will vote economic interest because their backs are against the wall.

Funny thing is, President Clinton ran on this same thing, and he was right, just as Barack is now. Was he equally offensive?? He acknowledged the wedge issues. And you can sit here all day long and declare people offended, but they're not. If anything, they're in shock a politician is finally telling the truth. That's why this won't work.. He already warned them on the game John McCain plans to play, and people are saying, "Not this time!"

People are hanging on the edge of a cliff in this country and they're not going to be hoodwinked this time. Because unlike you, Barack and I know, that people are SMART enough to take a look at what's been going on for the last 20 - 30 years... you seem to imply that they are stupid enough to miss the point of his comments, but instead will have the same knee-jerk reaction that you seem to be having. Are you calling those rural voters stupid?? How elitist and condescending!

11. Transcript available
It doesn't even show her attitude when she made the statement:

Someone goes to a closed-door fund-raiser in San Francisco and makes comments that do seem elitist, out of touch and, frankly, patronizing. That has nothing to do with him being a good man or a man of faith.

We had two very good men and men of faith run for president in 2000 and 2004. But large segments of the electorate concluded that they did not really understand or relate to or frankly respect their ways of life.

And I think that is an issue for voters, as I’ve heard today from people I visited in Scranton and elsewhere. So this is a legitimate political issue. And there are some issues that are not. But this one is.

17. BREAKING! Hillary also LIED about her role in Romania as First Lady
I just watched the re-run and saw her mention her role in Romania where she said she went there and talked with Romanian children who were being sexually abused. She says she was visiting the orphanages.

Well...it turns out she is LYING AGAIN! Here's an assessment:

The visit took place in the summer of 1996, but Hillary Clinton wasn’t visiting the orphanages, but instead went to an under funded HIV/AIDS center, a US funded classroom, and met with government leaders.

While I don’t know about pregnant mothers being followed by secret police (the logistics of that would be simply unbelievable, even for a socialist state). But abortions were illegal. Although the situation has since stabilized considerably, in 1996, mothers simply abandoned their children and the orphanages were in shambles. Hillary Clinton was asked to bring attention to the plight of the abandoned Romanian children by visiting the completely unfunded orphanages.

She didn’t.

It was an election year for her husband and she wanted to highlight “how great the Clinton foreign policy was for the people of Romania.”

Those Romanians who were abandoned by their parents as children, forgotten by their government, and ignored by Hillary Clinton have a slightly different recollection of 1996.

I haven't found the clip yet...but it is VERY APPARENT that she mentioned "San Francisco" with a snide, Repug style of messaging that implied that somehow San Francisco is part of the issue.

She has mentioned it before and she used the usual San Francisco analogy like Bill O'LIElly or any other knuckle-dragging Repug. Why else would she mention San Francisco?

She is using the Repug lexicon to associate San Francisco as a cuddly venue for elitists to make fun of working class people. It's using a Repug stereotype coming from the piehole of a so-called Democrat.

51. The liberal 2/3rds of the Democratic Party has been beaten up like that for decades.
Edited on Sun Apr-13-08 11:58 PM by TahitiNut
When the conservative "Democrats" threaten to vote GOP (the "protection racket" of the DLC), they each present TWICE the vote difference as the left. Thus, they're the shit on the tail wagging the dog.

Of course, when Nader described this "game" the DLCers and rabid partisans screamed like stuck pigs. Go figure.

60. I just saw the video.
Can you BELIEVE that?

She comes here to rake in money and then turns around to do something like that?

The only snobs in San Francisco ARE HER FRIENDS.

The rest of us are working stiffs who are trying to deal with a deficit, with poverty, with disappearing jobs, with the highest gas prices in the whole damn country. Afraid to go to the grocery store and social services disappearing as fast as our benefits.

Who is this person?

67. She's absolutely right!!!
Obama went to raise money from a group of billionaires and thought that his comments would not get out to the public at large. Too bad for him that everyone now knows what he said, and it's not playing well in PA. I just got back and people were not amused, to put it mildly.

before the Clintons and Gore came out here and stumped for Newsom.

Pelosi hasn't had a townhall in two years and is shunning the left. Now, this.

91. Media Matters did a great analysis on the use of "San Francisco Liberal"
Hillary Clinton is playing right out of the Repig Playbook with her comments using San Francisco as a pejorative term:

... Media Matters conducted a survey* of media coverage of Pelosi for 90 days prior to the 2006 midterm elections and found that, contrary to Pinkerton's claim about the media's election coverage "spin," newspapers, broadcast networks, and cable news networks repeatedly characterized Pelosi as a "San Francisco liberal" or a purveyor or symbol of "San Francisco values" while rarely mentioning the fact that Pelosi was a grandmother or that she was raised in Baltimore. Fox News showed the greatest disparity, with 19 characterizations of Pelosi as a "San Francisco liberal" and only one mention that Pelosi was a grandmother. The Fox News program Hannity & Colmes accounted for 11 of the 19 Fox News characterizations.

Pre-election media coverage for the period August 7 through November 7:
