White women begin to turn away from Clinton (PA)

LEVITTOWN, Pa. — Like many women over 50, Paula Houwen was eager to vote for Hillary Clinton for president.

"I was impressed when she was first lady. She wasn't the country's trophy wife," the 56-year-old suburban Philadelphia pharmacist recalled.

Today, though, Houwen's no longer a Clinton fan.

"I do not like the way Hillary Clinton has run her campaign," she said.

Clinton's strongest core of support — white women — is beginning to erode in Pennsylvania, the site of the critical April 22 Democratic presidential primary, and a loss here could effectively end her White House run.

A Quinnipiac University survey taken April 3-6 in Pennsylvania found that Clinton's support fell 6 percentage points in a week among white women. Nationally, a Lifetime Networks poll of women found that 26 percent said they liked Clinton less now than in January, while only 15 percent said they liked her more.

"These are Democratic women who waited all their lives for a woman president, but Hillary is not turning them on," said polling analyst Clay Richards.

The Clinton campaign is aware of the danger, and last week it began dispatching friends of Clinton from New York, Washington and elsewhere to key Pennsylvania communities to have "living room chats" with women.

"We thought this might happen," senior Clinton adviser Ann Lewis said of the erosion. A key reason, she said, is rival Barack Obama's ad barrage, notably his gentle but persistent reminders to TV viewers that he's well-equipped to heal the ailing economy.

1. And there goes PA....
And the Primary. That, and Latinos, are her last strong-hold.

3. They are starting to see her for what she is, a liar who is totally devoid
of ethics or moral values

7. Did you read this part of the article?
For Clare Howard, a meditation teacher from Southhampton, it was the night in January when Bill Clinton suggested that Obama did well in the South Carolina primary because of his race.

That went too far, said Howard, 60. "It was like they would do anything to win," she said.

Joan Schmidt, 60, a school psychologist in Levittown, grew tired of hearing Clinton tout — and exaggerate — her experience.

Jane Dovel, 68, an artist in Doylestown, turned away from Clinton after hearing the New York senator's reaction to Obama's comments that Ronald Reagan had been a "transformative political figure."

Clinton fired back that Republicans hadn't had better ideas. "I don't think it's a better idea to privatize Social Security," she said. "I don't think it's a better idea to eliminate the minimum wage."

That's not what Obama had said, recalled Dovel. "What Clinton said was a blatant lie," she said. "From that moment on, she was history. She was not to be trusted."

I've said before that when she turns nasty she loses popularity. The problem is she usually drags both herself and Obama down in the national polls as a result. She could have had this in the bag by now is she'd have had better campaign management. People were lining up to jump on her bandwagon across America. However, when her wagon rolled into town many people found the tune it was playing to be a bit too far off key.

bring to the table.

15. Is it her or her strategist?
I'm beginning to think she's taking advice from people intent on fracturing the Democratic Party.

When she's talking about national issues and tossing barbs at McCain her polling number go up. You'd think this would have been noticed by someone in her campaign by now. No Democrat is going to gain national numbers by perpetuating a (much despised by Democrats) Republican myth.

As political gambles go this one had the odds stacked against her and she still took the risk.

19. Does it matter? If she wants to be President she needs to be able
to tell the difference between good and bad advice.

20. Good point.
Personally, I'd rather she not be president. In part because of the way her campaign has been run. I don't think she stands a chance in the GE up against the Republicans.

11. If she's turning away people in Doylestown, that is very telling. Doylestown is prime.......
Hillary country, along with the surrounding areas like Jim Thorpe.

10. I used to admire her a great deal
and wanted very much to be able to be able to support her campaign for president, but I just cannot.

Mr. Caria was reading the text of one of her speeches the other day and sighed, "Why is she making me hate her?" I think that sums up the way a lot of us feel.

14. I would love to have a female president one day
soon but I don't want that vindictive witch to be the first one. I would not mind if Obama selected an intelligent woman who sees a need for change in Washington. I would want that woman to be the exact opposite of Hillary. I would not mind the senator from Missouri. She seems very intelligent and seems to get along with Obama great. There is no guarantee that we would take Missouri because from what I have heard she barely won there (just as Obama did). Plus the downside of losing a DEM senator in a pretty much red state.

16. Not thrilled with McCaskill
She's voted for all the funding, all the Patriot Act extensions including giving immunity to the telecoms, condemned the "Betrayus" ad. The only thing she's got going for her is she voted against Mukasey. I think she's a nice lady & her heart's in the right place, but is terribly naive and timid. I voted for her with much greater expectations. But at least she's better than Talent.

As the saying goes, with her, familiarity breeds contempt.

The more people get to actually know Clinton, the more they dislike her.
