On The Elton John Fundraiser For Hillary Clinton
Edited on Wed Apr-09-08 12:06 PM by slinkerwink
The Clinton campaign said that $2.5 million will be raised tonight at the Elton John fundraiser. I found this interesting comment on TalkingPointsMemo in discussing the fundraiser, and thought I should post it here as well:

It's being reported like this is new money. Her campaign has been selling tickets to this thing for weeks (tickets went on sale 3/19 http://www.hillaryclinton.com/news/release/view/?id=6565). So isn't it likely that most or at least a large portion of that $2.5 million was collected last month and already included in the undersized $20 million she raised last month?

The real question on fundraising is the trend. We know she was doing really well in early March, repeatedly raising $1 million a day, and we know that she only raised $20 million for the month ("almost all" for the primary, though not "all"). That suggests the pace slowed considerably toward the end of the month. The question, it seems to me, is how much of the $2.5 million EJ fundraiser is new money?

It's a good question that needs to be answered.

18. That's funny, slinkerwink!
I feel like writing elton john a letter and telling him what I think of his fundraising for a Liar. Imo, it makes him look very ignorant.

22. The letter you really should write
Is to your candidate asking him to be clear that he will not allow his singers to gay bait at any future official events. Elton is gay as I am, and from this pair of eyes, you look ingnorant thinking that people will give your support parsing candidate the benefit of the doubt.

Let me be very clear to you. Elton is married to an American. Unlike hetersexual couples, gay couples are not allowed to bring our overseas spouses home to the US. Even couples like them, who are legally and equally married in the UK. Senator Obama voted against the bill that would have ended this offensive and discriminatory policy. That coupled with the McClurkin and Caldwell events, and the many code words the Senator has toss off when talking about, but never to, gay people leave us hard pressed to find a way to support him.

People support candidates who support them. And they reject teh candidates that refuse to support them. Democracy. Elton and I, we have different priorities than you do. Our own equal rights and those of our brothers and sisters. If it bugs you, take it to your candidate. But don't expect gay people to shut up and agree with your opinions, which are just opinions. Welcome to democracy, ain't it fun?

3. I think the answer is pretty much a given
If ticket sales are the primary source of the fund-raising then it's pretty safe to asssume a large portion has already been collected. The question, I think, is really whether this money has been reported as part of the "daily" fundraising or if Camp Hillary is going to report it all as one lump total at some point in the future or if they'll try to get away with doing both.

38. Nope.
It may have been, technically "collected" but it will not be reported until April's books are done. That is pretty standard.

32. I didn't think that they were allowed to contribute time either
It was my understanding that time is considered a 'contribution' to a 'fundraising effort'.

Then again, I guess they found a loophole or they wouldn't be going forward with it.

The guy hasn't made a decent album in over 30 years. Hardly worth that ticket price.

but I would think selling tickets for a future event would be a separate fund, with it's own accounting...showing all the costs of the event etc.,

31. Having done event promotion....
I can tell you that it is quite typical to count income AFTER the event is over. After all tickets are sold. After all expenses are covered.

One may make a projection, as the HRC camp has... but the revenue would not be counted as income until after the fact.

It looks like they are projecting an income. It will be reported as part of April's take. or maybe even May's... depending on when the books are done.
