TAKE THIS TEST! Harvard's "Project Implicit" tells you which candidate you implicitly support.
It's an Implicit Association Test. Please try it and report back with the rank of the candidates as the test results demonstrate. You get results at the end of the test...you don't have to sign up with email and all that.

From the website:

Featured Task: Presidential Candidates IAT

It is well known that people don't always ‘speak their minds’, and it is suspected that people don’t always ‘know their minds’. Understanding such divergences is important to scientific psychology. This web site presents a method that demonstrates the conscious-unconscious divergences much more convincingly than has been possible with previous methods. This new method is called the Implicit Association Test, or IAT for short.

We will ask you (optionally) to report your attitudes toward or beliefs about these topics, and provide some general information about yourself. These demonstrations should be more valuable if you have also tried to describe your self-understanding of the characteristic that the IAT is designed to measure. Also, a variety of factors may influence your IAT performance. The score is provided for entertainment purposes only.

Data exchanged with this site are protected by SSL encryption, and no personally identifying information is collected. IP addresses are routinely recorded, but are completely confidential.

Important disclaimer: In reporting to you results of any IAT that you take, we will mention possible interpretations that have a basis in research done at the University of Washington, University of Virginia, Harvard University, and Yale University. However, these Universities, as well as the individual researchers who have contributed to this site, make no claim for the validity of these suggested interpretations. If you are unprepared to encounter interpretations that you might find objectionable, please do not proceed further. You may prefer to examine general information about the IAT before deciding whether or not to proceed.

*************

Instructions (nutshell version).

After you enter your info, you'll start the test.

There are nine segments to the test. Before you begin each segment, read the screen carefully. It will tell you to press E for no, and I for yes, and spacebar to go to the next page. You are to do this test as quickly as possible without stopping to "think" about each response.

Make sure to read the first page of each segment, because it tells you which candidate is to be associated with yes and good, and which is to be associated with no.

Their instructions:

The YES-NO Task

In the YES-NO task, you will see items, presented one at a time.

Two "YES" categories will be displayed at the top half of the screen.

The first "YES" category is a presidential candidate, represented by face images.
The second "YES" category is always 'Good', represented by four words.

When items belonging to either of the two "Yes" categories appear, press "I" (the YES key).
Press "E" (the "NO" key) for any item not in either of the two "YES" categories.
We record the time to your pressing the correct key for the presented image or word.

If you press an incorrect key you will see a red "X". Rapidly correct the error by pressing the other key.

***************

If you've read all this, click here to start!

Please report back with the rank of the candidates, 1. 2. 3.

Have fun!

33. Try it again.
I took it a few times. The first time I closed it before I meant to. The second time the window did some weird refresh thing while I was filling out the survey and the results showed all three dead even in the center. The third time showed the results I post previously, which fell in line with how I remember the first one. I'm left to assume that the second time was some sort of glitch or something.

34. I did, Obama edged out the other two, barely, still clustered around the center though.
The thing that's messed up is the word associations, simply because I don't associate either the negatives or the positives with any candidate, they were too personal/emotional. I just don't feel strongly about any of them, the only thing I care about is policy.

35. I didn't understand until it actually started.
The test involves 9 series of pictures and words. "E" is bad, "I" is good. In each series, one candidate is selected as "bad" and one is selected as "good" (not by the user). They also include a number of words that are either positive or negative. The object is to correctly assign each picture or word as "good" or "bad" using "E" or "I" as quickly as possible.

The test is based on the premise that a person will have more trouble (go slower of make more mistakes) during the series in which the candidates that they like are supposed to be placed in the "bad" group.

Not sure if that explaination is any better, but I tried.

52. "There were too many errors made to determine a result."
Probably because I was really confused about what I was saying "yes" and "no" to; the new picture, or the heading (hillary or good, etc.,) and if I was supposed to use the "no" keys for specific things, and "yes" key for other specific things, what the hell does "yes" and "no" mean?

65. "Yes" means that it's part of the assigned group. "No" means it's part of a different group.
So for example, Obama, Love, Pleasure, and so on are the "IN" group.... McCain, Hate, and Anger are part of the "OUT" group.

You click YES when something in the IN group appears on the screen, you click NO when something in the OUT group appears on the screen.

68. Well that's what they're testing
If grouping "McCain" and "pleasure" together makes no sense, the results will reflect that. If grouping "Obama" and "agony" together don't make any sense, the results will reflect that too. But if grouping "Hillary" and "love" together make sense, then Hillary will come out well.

That's sort of the idea of the test. :P

84. of course, lol.
:silly:

When I get a group like "McCain and Good," and then a picture of Obama and/or the words "evil" or "happy," I'm not sure if I'm clicking for the picture or word, or the misleading title. It also won't let me click "no" for HRC in a particular "group," for example if I already clicked "no" for one of the other candidates.

It's funny how you can keep seeing the same word or image, and "accidentally" press a different key the third time or so.

Mine came out with Hillary pretty near the top, a large gap with Obama about a third from the bottom, and McCain about a tenth from the bottom.

"Blink". There is a whole chapter about it, focused on unconscious racism. It's important to understand the IAT gets at "hidden" feelings, often feelings you reject consciously, such as biases you are trying to overcome. Gladwell himself was distubed at the results he got.

I believe that would place them all in the middle as well.

81. It does. The same thing happened to me.
I saw it as a game of skill, nothing to get emotional about. I was tapping my foot to my keystrokes at the end.

You old/young enough to remember the late 80s electronic toy, called Simon? It gave you a pattern to remember and play back, and you had to hit the buttons at a relatively constant speed to beat it, because it counted slowness against you. I loved that thing. This quiz reminded me of it.

(Yay Aspies. :P)

71. Hey Maddy, it was off for me... and not just on this test. Thoughts?
They had my candidates:
1. Clinton
2. Obama
3. McCain
Well... it got that last one right.

I also took the sexuality quiz and it said I had a slight preference for heterosexual people over homosexual people. Strange. I'm gay, the majority of my friends are gay... I honestly don't think I favor heteros over gays. I'd LIKE to think it was equal. But if I'm trying to be HONEST with myself, I think I favor gays slightly. You know, we have that secret wink and nod thing going on.

It's weird. Perhaps I am subconsciously conflicted. Maddy, do you think am I secretly a hetero preferring Clinton supporter instead of a homo preferring Obama supporter? Or am I part of the small percentage that this test doesn't work for?

I found it interesting to have Obama further down than I would have thought. As someone said upthread, I think the negativity comes more from his supporters than Obama himself.

75. If we turn the scale into a percentage.. top to bottom. Obama 85%- Clinton 65%- McCain 30%
It seems about right to me. I am strong Obama supporter, but not a "cultist". I don't like Hillary but will vote for her in the GE assuming she does not break any rules to gain the nomination. McCain won't get my vote but I don't really dislike the guy.

82. took it thrice.
The first time may have been skewed because the first frame I didn't read very well, and just hit no repeatedly whenever I saw McCain, hoping to prove my point. That gave me Obama at about 55%, with Hillary and McCain tied at about 45%.

The second round I did it proper, and Obama about 66%, Hillary at 50%, and McCain at about 20%

The third time I was bored, so I made them all line up at 50% together. Now thats Unity.

85. It worked this time,
Edited on Wed Apr-09-08 06:53 AM by LWolf
when I finally figured out that I needed to attempt to ignore the pictures and words themselves and just match them to given categories.

Results:

HRC, Obama, McCain.

None of them were in the top half; HRC in the middle, Obama and McCain close together about 1.5 inches below her.

the second time I got 1. Clinton, 2, McCain, 3. Obama.
I guess I dislike Obama and McCain about equally.

87. Clinton way at the top, Obama and McCain way at the bottom.
Weird--in mine, Obama was actually just slightly lower than McCain. Of course I'd never vote for McCain, and will of course vote for whoever the Dem nominee is. I think it's just that I don't hear as much "negative" stuff about McCain lately, because nobody here seems to care much about criticizing *him* as opposed to our two Dem candidates.

91. Clearly an IQ test for me
I don't have the foggiest idea of what the hell I was supposed to be doing.

So...on the top were the words for the president and below was a picture and I was supposed to click I or E for yes or no? On the top, every single time it said "Barack Obama" and "Good" and then below a picture would come up of either BO or Clinton.

Totally confusing waste of my time.

I'll just tell you that I support Hillary....Clearly, I should have added rum to my morning coffee.

93. You get a name on top. Let's say you got Hillary.
The photo or words show on the bottom.
If the name is Hillary, when Hillary's photo shows up, you are supposed to hit I. If it's Obama's or McCain's photo, you are supposed to hit E.
If the words are good, you are supposed to hit I. If the words are negative, you are supposed to hit E.
So, you are supposed to hit I to match candidate's name with a candidate's photo, and candidate's name with a good word about the candidate.
