ABC: One soldier after another expressed support for the candidates who promised to end the war
April 7, 2008

U.S. troops in Iraq support Obama, Clinton

Moments after listening to Vice President Dick Cheney deliver a "rousing speech," U.S. troops in Iraq told ABC reporter Martha Raddatz that they supported Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton for president. The Democrats represent a change, they said.

One after another, soldier after soldier went on the air on national television and expressed support for the candidates who promised to end the war in Iraq.

The "striking" development comes at a time when violence is on the rise in Baghdad and Basra, and the top U.S. commander in Iraq, Gen. David Petraeus, is set to testify on Tuesday before the next president of the United States.

Only one person interviewed for the story identified as a McCain supporter, and even that seemed to be based more on party affiliation than deep support for the candidate. Sr. Airman Jedidiah Bryan said, "Republicans paid my paycheck this far. Might as well keep it going."

1. "Republicans paid my paycheck"!! Oy, you'd still get paid, you'd 'only'
be in the Chain of Command with someone with sense enough to use you to go to war when necessary.

2. This is why Hillary supporters need to catch a clue and realize this race isn't about Hillary.

It's about the country and the men and women who are shot, bombed and killed on a daily basis in a unjustified war. Not all but many Hillary supporters seem to be content with assisting the guy who will continue this needless carnage for another 100-150 years if need be.

Shame. Shame on you all who would sell out the country for a candidate.

3. oh, get off of your high horse. Plenty of folks are buried in the politics, not just Clinton voters
And even more Clinton supporters care just as deeply about the occupation as any Obama supporter.

11. This is one horse I'm riding to the end. No one whines "anybody but Obama" more than Hillary
supporters. Go to the Hillaryclinton forum and take a gander. They can't get away with that garbage in any normal democratic leaning forum.

5. A lot of Obama supporters in that article. I agree with this soldier:
When asked if he was concerned about criticism that Obama had less political experience than some of the other candidates, the battle-weary soldier replied, "No, I think being a decent leader doesn't have to do anything with experience much."

7. Hopefully, with Iraq moving back to the forefront, all Democrats - both Clinton and
Obama supporters - are reminded of why voting for McCain or not voting for whomever the Democratic nominee will be is insane.

The Petraeus and Crocker testimony, along with listening to the Republicans (including Lieberman) questioning them, makes me feel much more confident that the Democratic Party will be united in the Fall.

10. this is the fight McCain has chosen, so far
He begins on the losing side of that argument, for sure. And, our party is already united against all of that, so . . .

8. Rec'd. Now, if we were only assured their votes will count. I don't
think we ever did find out what happened after the 04 election.

And they need to keep making themselves heard in a public way. McCain's ultimate achilles heel may be the rank and file of our military.
