PORTSMOUTH — Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. John F. Kerry, a decorated Vietnam War veteran, spent most of Memorial Day in South Hampton Roads because, he said, “I’m a Navy man, and I love a Navy town.”
He also seems to love a challenge.
Kerry was stumping for votes in a state that has not supported a Democratic president in 40 years and in a region that has thousands of servicemen and women deployed in Iraq. So he shed his suit jacket and spent an hour shaking hands and signing autographs under humid, hazy skies after viewing Portsmouth’s 120th annual Memorial Day Remembrance Parade.
During the parade, he saluted troops, waved to high school bands and covered his heart with his hand whenever the American flag passed before him. He gave a nod and a smile to a supporter holding a sign that read, “Evil Lurks in the Bush’s.”
In an interview after the parade, Kerry, who made no public comments, said he was not thinking of partisan politics on this day dedicated to honoring our fallen military heroes.
