Note: This is my cousin who is running for Congress.

VIRGINIA BEACH — A 35-year-old Virginia Beach lawyer and Iraq war veteran is challenging incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Edward L. Schrock for the 2nd District congressional seat.

David Ashe, a lawyer who recently returned from a two-year tour of duty in the Middle East, is the Democratic nominee. The 2nd District includes all of Virginia Beach and the Eastern Shore, plus parts of Norfolk and Hampton.

Ashe said he is running because he would have a better record on education, homeland security and veterans’ issues than the incumbent.

Ashe is running his first political campaign. He was raised in Norfolk and Virginia Beach and graduated from Princess Anne High School. He earned his undergraduate degree from Virginia Tech, then a law degree from the District of Columbia School of Law.

5. Here's his website:

Thanks for asking!

Well, we're hoping his chances are good, but you never know. I hope with Kerry advertising and if the tide turns in favor of Dems here in VA, maybe that will help him.

Valarie :)

13. Nice.
An Iraq war vet running against a Republican as a Democrat. This would be a rebuke to the repuke policies.

16. Nice to see a young person running.
Is VA Beach conservative? I know it's home to a lot of military facilities.

Then again, this guy's vet cred may go a long way, especially if the GOP can be finally decalred the party of chickenhawks.

17. Well, they just re-elected their Democratic mayor, Meyera Obendorff for
the umpteenth time, but I seem to recall reading it was a close election (I'm in Richmond, but grew up in Newport News). Because it's home to a lot of military families, it tends to be conservative.

It wasn't in the article, but after 9/11, he rented a car and drove from VA Beach to NY's Ground Zero and volunteered in the bucket brigade. He's a hell of a guy. My hero!

18. From my cousin, David:
Valerie,

"Holy moly, you are something else! Yes, I did have several people visit the site and contribute just from your generous assistance. I am really grateful to you for this. The national level Democratic Party is very intrigued by this race because of my Marine Corps background and also because of the incumbent's bewilderingly poor record of voting against vets, active duty and even Homeland Security. Here's a snapshot:

On 11 March, Ed Schrock (the incumbent) voted against an increase in combat pay, an increase in Veterans' health care and against and increase in Homeland Security. Why? Because the way to pay for these items was to trim down -- not eliminate -- but trim down the tax cut given to people who make over 1 million per year. Pretty shameful, huh? The money is there for a lop-sided tax cut, but not for vets, active duty or national security. He's got some explaining to do.

Thanks again for your help. I will try to weigh in on that message board with my sincere thanks.

Semper Fi,

David"

20. Thanks; I just emailed him your wish. Good luck on your move, and
thanks for all your well wishes, guys. He said that the article in the paper actually got his fund-raising wrong. He's raised about $100K. I got on Dean's Democracy for America website and emailed them about my cousin's candidacy. Hopefully, they'll help him out. David also said he's been in touch w/ Kerry's legislative liasion. I'll keep y'all posted on how things go.
