****** BREAKING: BOOK BAG GATE *********
Edited on Sat Apr-05-08 04:27 AM by mythyc
<pre-note: GinnyinWI: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=5389336&mesg_id=5391184 inspired this when she said she couldn't remember carrying book bags back then after racking her brain. I take this as seriously as it is or isn't true. if debunked no biggie-- it was a fascinating trip through images and history, which at the least i hope you enjoy. if not debunked, well, yet another instance of dishonesty in those parts; we're used to it, but think about its context on yesterday's day in history...>

Find me one picture online of a female student carrying her books in a book bag in the 1960s. Just one. I looked, for awhile. Because it's fun ---- revealing her silly stupid manipulative little lies. I left out pictures of protests. Although no protest photo I could find had a student male or female holding a bookbag, it's understandable that one might be having too hard a time dodging riot police to wield a book bag.

Bonobo has already compiled Hillary photo's circa 1968 (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=5389336&mesg_id=5389674). no bookbag in sight. To his list I add:

. .

...

...

note: all pictures are between 1965-1973 (though I pushed for 1967-1969) ; purses don't count :P

Observe every other picture I could find of any students of the period:

first the close ups, holding books, not bags. Also observe backgrounds... all carrying books, not bags:

.

.

.

...

...

now for some historical context. I'm sure we've all seen these pictures, but have ever looked for book bags in them? (brief cases don't count, and only men (James Meredith in picture 1) are carrying them anyway). Also ponder, the weight of this history, and that this is the legacy that Hillary is exploiting and trying to politically profiteer...

.

.

.

...

most important for current purposes: --- at Little Rock, as soldiers escort those brave 9 African American students, the rest of the student body observes. Not a single back pack on all those backs...

...

...

and now general memory lane college life fun:

. .

.

. .

.

.

verdicts? :D

22. Wrong! I had a book bag back in the late 50's. It was canvass
and had leather straps. There were not many abut several of us in my elementary school had book bags. When I went to college in 1960 I had to use a book bag because my chemistry and physics books were numerous and bulky. I didn't use the bag all the time. Many of us preferred to carry books in our arms without bags but they definitely existed.

And this story doesn't coincide with what she says was her behavior back then.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x5392425
During Nixon's time she tried to take Nixon's constitutional rights away when she worked at a law firm, or something along those lines.

Agree though, no book bags back then.

He "talks" to Eleanor Roosevelt's ghost about Hillary to doesn't want Bill to get a second term, beats up Ted Kennedy in fine republican style, wants Pelosi removed, does a tap dance of happiness over Wright's removal and replacement with Trent Lott (Hello?), accuses John and Robert Kennedy of planning political assassinations in Congo, Vietnam, and the Dominican Republic, announces his open support of Lieberman in the last election, accuses the democrats of wanting to keep Nixon in office "twisting in the wind".

...Did you say this guy is a democrat?

Edited on Sat Apr-05-08 07:19 AM by cornermouse
He approves of Trent Lott. He accuses the Kennedy brothers of planning multiple assassinations and he supports Lieberman over Lamont and is tickled pink that Lieberman won so that he can get on tv (see last Sunday) and tell people to vote for McCain. He's simply not credible and probably should be banned from DU as a source.

4. Interesting point and fun pics...takes me back...
Edited on Sat Apr-05-08 04:30 AM by PCIntern
I had a book bag in high school in the 60's...it was essentially a canvas pouch with a cinching cord which closed it and allowed me to throw it over my shoulder. A few of us had them...but you're right...I can't recall seeing a female carrying one in those days.

But her speech was such a total fabrication...when I watched it last night of KO, there was the sound of jaw hitting floor when even Mrs. PCIntern said, "She's lying. That's ridiculous. Look at her bullshit everyone." And so far, she is/was voting for Hillary.

That was the most disingenuous statement/story I've heard in a long time from a Democrat. I was there in '68...I know how we felt...it was a troubled time to say the least. But it would be the equivalent, say 40 years from now, of my kid running for political office and saying, "When 9/11 happened, I was in school that morning and when they told us about the towers and the Pentagon, I began to weep uncontrollably for the lost lives and the destruction, and the fallout from the dust, and I just knew that life would never be the same - that all the pieces from the building represented my shattered soul. I knew then that I was forever changed, even though I was only eleven years old. I unexpectedly and violently shoved all the books and papers from my school desk with one violent sweep of my arm."

it's demeaning to the process and to he individuals.

But, like a train-wreck, you just can't help yourself but watch WHEN THE CANDIDATE TEES HIMSELF OR HERSELF UP LIKE THIS.

I mean...what are we going to talk wbout here...arcane points of doestic and foreign policy...rehashing the crimes of the Bush Family...the ridiculousness of NAFTA from the get-go?

This we all know...it's a question of who's going to come up with a real GE Campaign, and if that kind of statement is the best she has to offer, then she's in real trouble. Sorry - and I'm no anti-Clintonite. Sorry again.

BTW, I still havent' decided for whom I'm voting here in PA. He has his problems too.

59. Still a lot of issues to discuss
A lot of voters, even on this forum, are still uneducated about the difference between Obama and Clinton on quite a few major issues. Many sell their votes short by assuming they're both the same. Not.

If Obama supporters don't want to discuss issues and have so much time on their hands, maybe they should go out and campaign for him, or start looking for summer jobs. Posting endless drivel with the faux scandal of the moment is ridiculous.

Just because you couldn't find a picture of one in use doesn't mean that no one used them. They were simple canvas bags with shoulder straps something like this.

I think some of you have an obsession, It's not healthy. You can get help.

58. Oh, how about this article comparing vintage 60s and 70s bookbags
with those of today? I was born in 1952, and I can assure you that book bags were in use from at least 1959, when I started first grade, on to through today. General rule of thumb: any statement that starts with NO ONE or EVERYONE is wrong.

<snip>

Unlike the 1960's, bags of all sorts, even plain old shoulder bags used on a daily basis, have become fashion statements that can make or break an outfit.

The Greek shoulder bag, which has no association with Fraternity/Sorority life, was widely popular among University of Maryland female students during the late 1960's and much of the 1970's. The rectangular shaped shoulder bag came in an assortment of colors, made of loom woven cotton, and fringed bottom corners. It is held by a twisted cord rope strap, so that women could adjust the length by knotting it.

The Greek shoulder bag was fashionable, convenient, and practical. However, unlike today, it was not held in such high regard as a fashion statement that it could make or break an outfit. Now that the handbag is so crucial to fashion and is extremely costly, looking back to when these shoulder bags were carried is somewhat odd considering the difference of importance in handbags through time. The price of this bag, in comparison to shoulder bags today, is extremely affordable.

In present time, a bag is so much more. There is a fascinating variety of handbags for every mood, outfit and occasion. Handbags have turned into an important fashion statement that probably costs just as big. In fact, it is not just the designer handbags that are so costly, but even school bags are expensive. The Herve Chapelier is a popular bookbag among students, just as the Greek shoulder bag was, which costs approximately $150 for a simple tote bag. This bag is approximately $140 more than the Greek shoulder bag that was utilized for the same purpose.

104. Yep, there were book bags in the sixties.
The first ones to show up at UTAustin were plain green canvas with a cinch cord handle. You could carry them slung over your shoulder, or purse-fashion. I had one of those; later bought a bright pink one with a printed design. You carried them to and from class, not to protests or social events. (And the very "social"--sorority sisters and fratrats--didn't carry them at all. Too "hippie/SDS".)

As for those nitwits who are making an issue of this--please, get help. You're suffering from an unhealthy obsession. There are medications that can make your lives better.

11. The book bag itself may be the least of it --
I remember the heavy canvas bags with shoulder straps that guys carried. There is no reason to assume that Hillary didn't or wouldn't have had one. It's not significant.

What I find more telling is the artificiality in her discourse--she appears to be READING her statement. If this was such an emotional event for her (as it supposedly was, since she was tearing up), she surely could have "winged it" rather than read.

But thanks for the pix, anyway. It takes me back to the time we wore matching sweater and skirt sets, with the sweaters buttoned up the back, penny loafers and knee-high socks. Candy bars cost a nickel each and were larger... well, I guess I shouldn't get started.

Actually 1968 was a horrendous year - the whole country seemed to reel from one thing to the next, and after the summer riots it didn't seem that we would ever recover.

I am about the same age as Hillary Clinton and also went to college in the Boston area. WE HAD BOOKBAGS. We took them to class; we just didn't carry them everywhere and take pictures of them. We also had some really ugly pants that for some reason were regarded as stylish. I think their main qualification was that our mothers didn't like them.

29. an eye-witness account from Indiana U (yes, they had b-bags)
What Did it Matter? The Legacy of Protest
McCarthyism, Vietnam, racism: These were among the targets during two decades of protests at IU.
By John Branigin

A crowd surrounds the university president's house, chanting slogans. Students stage a sit-in on a running track, calling for the elimination of race restrictions in the charters of fraternities and sororities. A rally against the government's foreign policy results in a near-riot when counterprotesters turn on the demonstrators.

These events sound familiar when referring to student unrest in the 1960s, particularly in such well-known hotbeds as the University of California at Berkeley or Columbia. But they all took place on the Bloomington campus....

The more liberal students, often derogatorily referred to as "green-baggers" after the dark green book bags they carried, particularly pushed the limits of administrative tolerance.

http://alumni.indiana.edu/magazine/issues/200103/protest.shtml

(And a personal account: Lots of people carried bookbags at Harvard in 1968 when I was a student there. The Coop sold plenty of them.)

I don't mind a good political debate (and even some heat), but this "Lord of the Flies" stuff is just too much to bear.

Edited on Sat Apr-05-08 08:25 AM by TexasObserver
As always, there are a few outliars who claim otherwise, but then, they dodged sniper fire on the way to the student union, too.

I checked my Yearbooks from back then, from two major universities, and not a single book bag in any photo among the thousands of photos of student life.

She fabricated the book bag, like she fabricated the story. Who has to READ their memory of when they found out about MLK's death?!

34. This seems a little silly to me
We call them bookbags now, so isn't it possible that she was using modern terminology, or that she did not remember that it was a satchel and not a bookbag back then? How many of you who went to school at that time remember exactly when you switched from satchels to bookbags? Isn't it possible she might have just gotten a detail wrong, rather than the whole story being wrong? This seems as silly to me as the Clinton folks making a big deal out of Obama being a year off with the Kennedy story.

It was all wrong.

You see, she was going for the "I'm remembering back as if it was yesterday" moment.

The proof of that is that she was crying. Remembering and crying, right?

She could literally "see" herself on that day "hurling" that book bag across the room. Perhaps she recalls the thud as it hit the wall, the way the books scattered on the floor. That's the way it is when one's mind takes a "photo". We remember all sorts of vivid details.

This brings me to the main question I have.

WHY WAS SHE LOOKING REPEATEDLY DOWN AT HER NOTES TO 'REMEMBER' SUCH A VIVID EVENT!?

51. There were book bags at Harvard -- presumably at Wellesley too
When I was at Radcliffe in the 60's, everyone carried their books in heavyweight green drawstring canvas bags -- students and many faculty alike. I haven't been able to find a photo online, but googling on "Harvard book bag" turns up a variety of references. Here are a few:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/03/09/AR2007030901617.html

I can still remember vividly the day in September 1958 when he charged into a seminar room in Founders Library (he never merely walked into a classroom), dropped his green Harvard book bag on the desk and announced without preliminaries that we would begin our discussion of Homer by considering the quotation by Protagoras that "man is the measure of all things."

A dapper dresser in old fashioned 3 piece suits with an ever present homburg and the classic 1950s green Harvard book bag slung over one shoulder, Baker made almost a matched pair with that other great old professor, William Alfred.

http://www.forewordmagazine.com/articles/shw_article.aspx?articleid=80

With his interest piqued, Balaban returned in 1971 to explore a living oral poetry tradition, travelling the countryside with his Harvard book bag and a Sony tape recorder, asking farmers to sing their poetry to him.

http://cornellcollege.edu/news_center/press_releases/nr2000/debbins2.shtml

Bill Debbins, professor of philosophy at Cornell for 31 years until his retirement in 1994, died Feb. 24, 2001, of pneumonia at age 73. . . . "He looked like an actor wonderfully cast to play a philosophy professor at MGM: Very handsome, with sleepy eyes, wavy hair (first brown, then white), the hint of a smile almost always in evidence," Dean of the College Dennis Moore said a service for Debbins on March 4. "He smoked a pipe, affected tweed sport coats, carried a Harvard book bag over his shoulder, spoke in a gentle, pea-gravelly voice.

that phrase just smacked of 'scripted', don't you think? I also have no memory of carrying books in that era any other way than in the crook of my arm, as you see most of the students in the photos above. Thus, the opportunity for boys to carry your books!

More than anything the incident cited by HRC seemed phony, and written by someone who was not there, who was not even alive at the time of the King assasination. I remember feeling lots of things, but hurling my book bag across the room was not even close to the reaction I had.

103. A pattern of behavior is the issue
She may or may not have had a book bag but I always thought of her as a truth teller.

I never for one minute believed that she was a FIBBER.
First it was the "I found my voice" - coming from an experienced politician, that surprised me.

Then it was the kissy up to Barack at the end of the debate like she adored him.

Then the drama about Barack and the choirs of angels soon after..

Then it was a complete flip to the " Meet Ne in St. Louis Barack, shaking the paper at the camera and on and on and on."

Pretty soon you get the pattern and it is not pretty.

The 3 AM got me going and the Bosnia topped it.

Now her honesty is in question to many and that is a problem.

We have had 8 years of a dumb big time FIBBER and we want someone to level with us.

Did she have a book bag?

Let's just say she did ~ now what ----- I still don't trust her to tell me anything, much less me the President.

It not so much what she says but how she dismisses her FIBS.

I taught elementary school for many years.

I could tell in a minute if a little one was FIBBING ~ and she is just like one of those children.

Why she does it,I don't know but it is real and I don't like it.

78. This is an ignorant arguement and easily debunked.

85. Posts #s 8, 29, 51 (my favorite, thanks for the great quotes!) and 58 are plenty to moot my OP
if you replied that you thought I was 100% serious, or unflinching in the position, look back at the opening note. I prefaced everything by saying that I didn't take it any more seriously than demonstrable or verifiable, or not. Replies 8, 29, 51 and 58 offer more than enough substantial evidence that bags were in use back then to say, no problemo, you're right. Though it'd still be interesting to see a picture of a woman (or anyone) carrying a book bag, they've provided plenty of info and sources to prove the original case precarious and therefore inconsequential.

beyond that, to the repliers who took such offense, do you have to take everything so seriously? Besides being explicit that I'd be happy to say whatever I take it back as I am now 'no biggie' with counter-evidence, I ended the thread with a jokey grin for crissakes, and said (and still think) if anything this was fun to do because of the journey through history through pictures, were which both entertaining and educational and which plenty of other repliers here also enjoyed for their kitsch value and historical interest.

As a side note, what I find more interesting is all of the posters taking this ‘-gate’ so seriously here were completely mum in the equally silly threads last week about Obama's professor title. Difference between me and those who posted the professor-gate threads is in my first reply to everyone, I'm glad to not merely recant, but also acknowledge the reason in counter arguments, recognize the facts in the evidence, and casually admit the facileness of the topic. Whereas not a one of the professor gate conspiracy theorists ever did one of these things, let alone even admit the possibility that there could be other possibilities besides their own.

I agree that Hillary's display was contrived and likely written by someone else... as with every bit of human emotion she tries to meter out in a calculated triangulating way.

However, focusing on the book bag is just dumb.

Maybe she had one, maybe she made it up... but not having one doesn't prove the point that she's phony anymore than her having a book bag proves she's genuine.

Hillary tells plenty of BLATANT lies that don't require such nuance and parsing to display them as examples of her lying.

My 60's ugliest pants were had all the necessary qualifications -- bold pattern, garish colors, bell bottoms. They eventually wore out. So I cut off the legs and made -- a bookbag! It was a small bookbag and only held one or two, depending on size. But it was a convenient way to carry those one or two. I don't remember ever throwing out the bookbag, so I may still have it around someplace.
