Charlie Goodell, Jake Javits, and Nelson Rockefeller were three
of the nicest guys I ever met in politics. Maybe not coincidentally,
they were all New Yorkers, and all given hell by the extremist wing of
their party. Charlie Goodell was even called "the Christine Jorgensen of
the Republican Party." Of course, that was by Spiro Agnew, and getting
dissed by Spiro Agnew was sort of a prestige honor back in the 60s and 70s.

I hope the OP wasn't only restricted to the living. If so, it gets tougher.....
