A gallon of milk.
Yes, I've seen all the posts that bemoan our chances in November; the ones that say:

- We can't possibly win with either Obama or Clinton because they're the two weakest candidates we could put up.

- We can't win because Hillary supporters won't back Obama and visa versa.

- We can't win because McCain is too strong on national security.

- We can't win because we'll be diebolded.

- We can't win because.....

We can win- with either Hillary or Obama. The election is going to revolve around the failed economy; the price of milk and bread and gas, and heating oil. We'll just be entering the winter season and these things will be paramount for poor and middle class voters. And when it comes to economic bad times, voters do NOT trust repukes. They trust dems. The repukes couldn't have selected a worse candidate on economic issues if they'd tried. McCain doesn't even begin to know how to deal with the economic pain so many working class people are dealing with now and will be confronting in even starker terms in November. It WILL be worse in November than it is now. You'd be hard pressed to find an economist or pundit who doesn't agree that the economic forecast is bleak.

It's like 1992, when "it's the economy, stupid" struck a deep chord with voters, and bush sr.'s elitism and out of touch air worked against him- only more so than 16 years ago. I suspect that many in the electorate will be close to panic by election day.

Either Clinton or Obama- whoever is the nominee- will focus on the economy first and last. Yes Iraq is incredibly important, and the nominee will undoubtedly point out repeatedly the connection of the huge cost of Iraq to our failing economy.

And that's why dems, no matter the acrimony of this fight, stand a very good chance in November. It's also why we must win back the White House and why I'll support Hillary if she's the nominee.

1. yes, that's it..the White House and every contested position down the ticket
my new mantra: Straight Ticket, Stupid!!!

I have a decal left over from 06 that says "Fed Up? Vote Democrat in '06" I think a little artistic touchup with some whiteout could bring that right up to date.

3. I can't believe the price of groceries
On top of the price of gas for me to drive half an hour to go shopping!

I hate to say it but it comes down to "the economy, stupid." The war is causing our economy to turn to crap.

McCain = a third Bush term. Spread it far and wide.

5. I know. It shocks the hell out of me- every week
I'm a once a week shopper. I don't live in an area where it's easy to pop out for a quart of milk, and I live in an area where food prices have historically been high, but it's gotten to the point where I can't believe how expensive it's gotten. The basics are now a real burden on a lot of middle class families, and it's something that will be on the minds of the vast majority of voters in November.

12. I know more and more people growing food this year.
I grow some food every year, and I built a solar greenhouse last fall. Before it was done, I had people asking to buy my food! I've had people this year ask for vegetable starts, and non-gardeners are finding places to grown on their property, be it in the ground or in containers. Food prices are way out of control! Between food and gas, we are being crushed.

14. My dream
Is to have a place where I can plant a big enough garden that I have to take a week off work in the fall to can everything!

Told that to a city boy I was on a date with and he looked at me like I had grown a second head.

When I went further and said I would like a place that could be taken off the grid in an emergency, I thought a third head had popped in.

22. Nah, the date was OK
He's a sweetie, but a true city boy. He's only lived in urban areas-Boston, Minneapolis, and Chicago. Our different long-range goals probably mean we won't have much of a future, but it's always good to meet nice people.

17. LOL!
I live a very rural lifestyle. Everyone I know has a veggie garden. A large number heat with wood. My water is gravity fed from a spring. I could survive quite well without electricity. A couple of months ago my good friend's daughter brought her Smith roomie up for the weekend. The roomie is from L.A. and she'd never been anyplace like Vermont's Northeast Kingdom. She went around sort of stunned by our backward ways for the entire three days.

I don't understand why people here don't seem to understand that "it's the economy stupid", part deux, will undoubtedly be THE theme of this election year.

7. We can win but it will be an uphill battle
We will not only be running against McLame but also the mainstream media and Diebold.
And there will be the blue collar workers voting against their own best interests as they always do - the ones that will overlook their own economic pain because they truly believe the "they will follow us here if we don't fight them over there".

10. No, I don't think that's necessarily true
And no, the majority of blue collar workers do NOT always vote against their own interests. You are going to hard pressed to find a presidential election year in the past 50 years where the economy has been this dismal, and McCain is hapless about economic and domestic issues. Sorry, but people who are struggling to feed their families think first and foremost about that and not about National Security. See Maslow's hierarchy of needs.

15. Bag of King Arthur Whole Wheat Flour - $5.09.
So much for saving money making my own bread. If we allow McCain to be elected, I won't have to worry about it because I'll be in a bread line.

24. Try the store brand
Some of the grocery stores around here recently had a sale--a 10 lb bag of flour for $3. If you still want wheat rather than white bread, try making it with half white flour half wheat, or 3/4 white and 1/4 wheat. That will slow down how fast the more expensive flour goes.

Or, grind your own wheat flour. Buy bulk whole kernal wheat and a grain grinder. Send the wheat through the grinder, then combine it with white flour. If you don't want to lay out the money for a grain grinder, try a coffee grinder.

Places like Whole Foods sell the wheat in their bulk food aisle, or order online from a place like waltonfeed.com where you can get a 25 lbs bag for $16 not including shipping. They also have recipes for other things to do with wheat.

And don't be afraid of the flour attacting insects--store the bag in the fridge.

I will wait until next week and hopefully the items will go on-sale. Nope, the items just get higher in price.
The economy is not good and is getting worse.
