poll finds Edwards, Hillary, and McCain as top vp choices

i thought this was an interesting poll. Edwards does very well among those who are 65 and older which is a good thing since they are very likely to vote and their votes can be dependend on. Hillary does very well among young voters and women voters which is no surprise.

Among the 313 respondents identifying themselves as Democrats, Edwards' standing as the most likely running mate to help Kerry rose substantially to 31 percent. He did best among Democrats aged 65 and older. Rodham Clinton was named by 18 percent of Democrats as most likely to help Kerry win. Her support was strongest among women and respondents aged 18 to 24. McCain reached double digits even among Democrats, with 10 percent of them saying he would be most likely to help Kerry achieve victory. Democratic women (13 percent) favored McCain more strongly than men (5 percent) in terms of adding strength to the ticket.>

That's a dumb question. I mean, I would agree that McCain would virtually guarantee Kerry a victory, but that doesn't mean I want him there.

Which is why I said I don't want him there. However, if someone asked me the question "do you think McCain would help Kerry win?" My answer would have to be yes. So, it's a stupid question.

It's like, "have recent events changed your view of the Iraq war?" What the fuck does that tell anyone? I was against the war from the start. Recent events just make me MORE right.

3. I still don't understand the McCain appeal

He's a Republican - those looking at him are looking not at his position on issues but at his character. I think character is important, but we have enough people on our side of good character to suffice.

I hate to say this as a woman who admires Clinton tremendously, but it's too important to try to sell Hillary now. If we have a chance against Diebold and all the rest, it will probably be with Edwards.

i know i voted for mccain in the 2000 primary because i hated bush. but i had always intended to vote democratic in november whether it was gore or bradley. and mccain continuing to be critical of the bush administration helps. even i think mccain wont actually vote for bush in the end. i don't think mccain voted for bush in 2000 either. i think he voted third party, none, or write in.

The iconography of McCain is that he stands against Bush. That's how people see him. His popularity today is as much a reaction to the hatred of Bush as Dean's popularity is a reaction to hatred of Bush.

Hillary, NO, love her and can't wait to vote for her for prez, but she must keep her word to New York and finish her term. McCain? NO, NO, NO. While I will admit, that for a repug, he's pretty level headed, but, he is still a repug. NO THANK YOU.

I wouldn't vote for McCain if he were a democrat, he is no better than George Bush, he was a slacker in the academy and finished next to last in his class bragging that he wished he had been last...now you would turn down an Edwards,Gephardt or Clark for McCain, I don't think many democrats would.

10. Two things

1. McCain won't take it so what Kerry gains by talking about it is that he can argue he is a uniter not a divider like Bush. Maybe wins over a few moderates without actually picking McCain.

2. The survey results are of people identifying themselves as Democrats. Don't we need more than that to win this election? Don't we need some independent, decline to state folks? Results seem pretty irrelevant in that light, imo.

The short article did not describe the results separately for the independents but if 1000+ respondents were included and only about 625 were R or D, then apparently the rest were independent/declined to state, etc.
