Holy crap, fifty-four hundred?

Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., will be speaking at Penn State on Sunday morning at 11:30 on the Old Main lawn, two sources close to the campaign confirmed today.

As part of his tour across Pennsylvania, Obama will be making a stop in State College, Greg Stewart, co-chair of Obama's Pennsylvania field team, said.

Michael Stewart, president of Penn State Students for Barack Obama, also confirmed Obama's appearance and said it is a direct result of his organization registering 5,400 Penn State students as Democrats.

Okay...that's crazy. Penn State Students for Barack Obama registered 5,400 students as Democrats? How many did Hillary's group register? Here's a little perspective. In the 2002 gubernatorial primary between Ed Rendell and Bob Casey, here were the results for Centre County, where Penn State resides.

Ed Rendell 3,971 52.5%
Bob Casey Jr. 3,597 47.5%

Now...consider what 5,400 new Barack Obama votes means to the likely outcome in Centre County. Michael Stewart and his crew could come out of this election as legends.

1. that's staggering
According to this article, there are currently 33,707 registered Democrats in Centre County, with 4000 registrations yet to be processed. Stewart said that 5400 (77%) of the 7000 voters his group registered were Democrats. If 77% of the to-be-processed applications are Democratic, then there will be a total of 36,793 Democrats in Centre County, an increase of 16% over the 31,699 Democrats registered on 01-07-2008 (link).

I can't wait to see the numbers come in from Centre County on April 22nd!
