A lot of newbs may not know. A lot of old-timers may have forgotten.
DU has rules about signature images, because a lot of our members have dial-up.

Check your image and make sure that it is within DU's rules on sig image size. If not, go resize it or ask for help resizing it. DUers are a helpful bunch, and I'm sure you can get some help if you're not able to resize.

DU's rules on signatures images:

You may have no more than one image (.jpg or .gif format) in your signature line at any time. This image may not exceed 500 pixels wide, 200 pixels tall, or a file size of 20 kilobytes. If you do not know if your image is in compliance, right click on it and select "Properties."

44. True, but
DU does not allow you to break that rule. I've (and many others) been forced to resize, or choose a different image in order to get my sig to go through. If someone's sig is large and obnoxious, it's not breaking DU's rules, because they've updated their software to prevent you from exceeding their sigline requirements.

I wonder if posters are just posting pics at the end of their posts and not specifically in their sig lines.

It appears that it only knows when your avatar is not within size, not sig lines. :)

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=5275233&mesg_id=5275233

The OP is now out and about policing GDP with her stern admonitions against signatures she finds offensive. Oddly enough she only finds an Obama sig, one that is hardly huge, to be a major problem worth admonishing the OP for. I find that offensive. If there is a problem alert the moderators who are here to moderate. If you want to be a moderator, volunteer. Otherwise cut the crap.

73. a sig-level Defcon probably conserves I/O more than network bandwidth
Since the sig line is limited to 400 bytes and DU doesn't host custom images larger than an icon, the collective impact on DU's available bandwidth would be less of a consideration than the bottleneck of looking up each user's preferences in some SQL table (which also explains the loss of ignore functionality during Red Alerts, since that actually increases bandwidth requirements by serving posts that would otherwise be blank, but saves the server having to cross-check every post against the requester's blacklist). I think the purpose of the 20kb quota on sig images is to keep DU more readable/loadable than a Myspace page, since hotlinked images don't affect DU's servers directly (other than transmitting the image tag).

80. I know! It's so easy to get here that I never think about being away from it.
I can empathize, though. I fell in love with a special brand of hotlinks made in northeast Texas, and a deli-made boudin made in southeast Texas. Now that I no longer live in Texas, I have to make yearly runs to Texas to get both. We leave home, go to Longview, get the hotlinks, then down to Port Arthur to get the boudin. Spend the night with family and then back home.

But, lord have mercy when the freezer goes dry and I can't get back for a couple of months! I sit here salivating thinking about smoked hotlinks!

82. You can catch crawdads in small bodies of water in Colorado.
I used to catch them when I was a kid. I don't know how they'd be to eat, but you could try anyway.

83. Yeah, I used to catch them in creeks in New England when I was a kid.
But I'd be able to catch 1 or 2 over the course of an afternoon. It's an entire industry in Mississippi, where someone else does the catching and you can buy them by the 50-count really inexpensively. One or two crawdads aren't good eating, but 20-30 are! :9 So it's a good thought, but not worth the time and effort for so little payback.

I can remember having a whole aquarium full of them. Hmmm, I sense a new business opportunity in the making.

Edited to add: Hmmm, check this out. http://www.lifeofahunter.com/2007/08/an-evening-with.html

94. Actually, I do remember seeing crawfish in CO.
It was out in the Paonia area, some fishermen left a whole lot of 'em next to a river, the gulls were having a field day. As I recall, they were as big as the ones in Mississippi. The ones I caught in Massachusetts were really pretty tiny. It may be the difference in latitude, since Denver is so much further south than Massachusetts--maybe they grow bigger and multiply more fruitfully out here. :hi:

93. OMG, how have I not heard of this place?
It's only about 10 minutes from where I live! If you're serious about meeting for a meal, I'm always up for meeting DUers. But we'll split the check so no one can accuse you of trying to buy off a mod. :)

Seriously, pm me if you'd like to get together, eat seafood and trash Republicans.

68. well I imagine it can tell if the filesize is too big
but i doubt it opens the file and scans the pixel height and width. Maybe that's what happened.

66. We do indeed have rules that cover sig images and a few other
things as well.

There are quite a few people on dial-up, for various reasons, and to make someones life a little harder is not conducive to civility, as are many of the replies to this thread.

FWIW...I AM a hall monitor, part of my job is to uphold rules that we have here. In most cases, people receive polite PM's about sig images, and and almost always comply with the request to bring them down to size.

Just because someone can post like a fool, does not mean they have to. Rather than argue the point, or call people names, running rampant w/PA's... just stay within the rules, things go far smoother that way, and we tend to get along a lot better.

70. Should I get bonus points for having no signature?
Or maybe program could be developed whereby I could donate my signature bandwidth to someone else.

Honestly, I personally have a problem with those who push the rules to their limits. It's exactly what corporations do these days.

I'd just assume they break the rules, rather than come as close to the limit as possible. At least then they show their true nature.
