NRA endorsement of Bush is on hold
http://www.thehill.com/news/051204/nra.aspx

An influential gun-rights group known for backing Republicans is unlikely to endorse President Bush until after the federal assault-weapons ban expires in September.

Bush supports the renewal of the 10-year ban but has not called on the GOP-controlled Congress to act. If he does so, the move would probably cost him the endorsement of the National Rifle Association (NRA).

If he loses this endorsement you can stick a fork in him.

1. But where are they gonna go? It's Bush or nobody for this group
and they'd have to sit this one out. Just playing devil's advocate.

2. They can stay home...
...and as long as Kerry doesn't make a stupid anti-gun comment between now and November they will.

4. I think most of them..
care more about keeping Bush in office than they do about keeping their guns. They've been blind to just about every fault, and any time their support starts to falter, the GOP just says "what are you going to do, support the commie DemocRATS?"

6. Nope. They care only about keeping their guns.
They care about keeping their guns more than they care about anything else in the world. Of course they won't go to Kerry--they can't stand him: he votes for gun control measures. By not endorsing bush *, they most likely will not be pouring their money into his campaign. Or working for him. Some may stay home on election day. All good for the Dems.

BUT....this is probably not going to happen because they said they wont endorse him until after the assault weapons ban comes up for renewal in September. Bush* has angered them by saying he would sign that bill--HOWEVER, the bill is unlikely to reach his desk. Why? Because the repugs in the legislature will not bring it to a vote, thus saving every repug's ass regarding the NRA. Then, there is still time for the NRA to come on board, endorse him, put in their money, their campaigning, their votes.

Bottom line: a non-issue.

8. I find it interesting that...
Edited on Wed May-12-04 07:03 PM by RoeBear
...the NRA didn't endorse Bush in 92 or Dole in 96. Years that the repuubs lost.

Keep the gun issue on the low burner and we can win. Make it an issue and it we have W for four more years.

One sure way to make it an issue is to try to push for the useless AWB ban now.

11. They didn't endorse the Chimp in 2000 either
And then they kicked lots of bucks to him during the recount period. The NRA is scum.

"One sure way to make it an issue is to try to push for the useless AWB ban now."
Who the hell are you kidding, Roe?

Since this asswipe has promised he'll sign the AWB, let's make him do so...or explain why.

Either way, it's a win-win situation.

And the AWB is not useless...the gun lobby itself showed THAT claim is a lie.

...who would other wise stay home on election day by pushing the AWB?
Are you sure you want Kerry elected?

15. Gee, roe, it's called a win-win issue...
You either show Chimpy up once again as a lying piece of shit, or you get him to sign Kerry's bill into law and give Kerry a win in Congress. And you get any Republican incumbent congresscritter who opposes it in the position of having to explain why they wanted to help out the Beltway sniper.

And yeah, I want Kerry elected because he WILL ban assault weaponms and close the gun show loophole. Those are WINNING issues.

Piss on the NRA and anyone who wants to pimp for them.

16. Do you deny the reality that the renewal will...
...never get to his desk because the Republican controlled house will never send it to him?

And with that being the case why fight a battle that you can't win?
(something like Iraq)

17. Abortion as a single issue
Honestly, is the NRA any different from pro-choice voters who use abortion as a litmus for any candidate for office? Not really.

I have problems with single-issue voters--lose sight of the forest for the tree.

21. Actually I'd say noooo way! You wouldn't believe some of them!
I know one guy, and he's like, the type to complain about people on welfare, and when I was like "if it was legal I'd just pay a bunch of people their tax money they spend on welfare plus a 10% premium, just give them $60, to have them vote Democratic", you know, like it was the one issue a lot of people vote on. And this guy was like "well, there's the gun issue" and that was the only one he named! Not even the war (this guy is actually kind of receptive on the war, doesn't go for the accusatory "traitor" junk, admitted he didn't know if we should be there or not)! I think my grandfather would be that way too - maybe this assault weapons ban could get him to at least vote Libertarian (I think he did this in 1980)!

My brother almost voted for Bush* over this one thing too! And he's just a hunter, not a militia guy or anything like that!

Now there's an idea - start getting a plan to get the gun people to defect to the Libertarian party! Serious, everyone be prepared to do that - know their platform, their website, all that.

12. They didn't endorse the Chimp in 2000 either.
Are you trying to pretend they won't be lying their asses off against Kerry, roe? That's horseshit and you know it.

"PITTSBURGH -- A man whose son was killed in the Columbine High School shootings literally walked in his child's shoes to the National Rifle Association convention, where he hoped Vice President Dick Cheney would address the federal assault weapons ban set to expire in September.
Tom Mauser, whose son Daniel was killed with an assault weapon in the Littleton, Colo., killings five years ago Tuesday, said continuing the ban is common sense.
Assault weapons "are the weapons of gangs, drug lords and sick people," Mauser said before his three-block march to the convention, which runs through Sunday. "It is a weapon of war and we don't want this war on our streets."
Mauser entered the convention hall where the NRA was meeting, but was turned away by a security guard as several conventioneers applauded. A couple of conventioneers yelled "Get a life" and "Vote for Bush." "

7. They're not fooling anybody...
They did the same thing in 2000....they held back an endorsement of the Chimp and lied their asses off about Gore (Heston called for his inbred mob to lynch Gore). Didn't matter, they lost Pennsylvania and Michigan anyway.

An NRA endorsement is the kiss of death, except to the sort of bigots who still fly the confederate swastika...and they were always going to vote for pResident Turd.

18. NRA Membership
They called me for a week trying to get me to renew. I told them to pound sand because the only issue they care about is Wayne LaPierre's influence. They've caved on gun issues before as well when they dropped military collectors in favor of well heeled duck hunters.
