"The Liar" must face the press and not hide behind Wolfson's Weasel words on Tuzla-gate:
Edited on Mon Mar-24-08 02:06 PM by Perky
this is the latest instance of Hillary herself sidestepping responsibility for here actions. It began with her not reading the intelligence reports on Iraq and continued with her misguided vote for the IWR and continued again with the refusal to say it was a mistake,

This is reprehensible and the press should not give her a pass.

Hacen't we hac enough of Presidents who lie about foreign affairs?

Clinton ‘Misspoke’ About Bosnia Trip, Campaign Says
By Katharine Q. Seelye
http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/03/24/clinton-misspoke-about-bosnia-trip-campaign-says/
The Clinton campaign says Senator Hillary Clinton may have “misspoke” recently when she said she had to evade sniper fire when she was visiting Bosnia in 1996 as first lady.
She has been using the episode as an example of her foreign policy bona fides.
“I certainly do remember that trip to Bosnia, and as Togo said, there was a saying around the White House that if a place was too small, too poor, or too dangerous, the president couldn’t go, so send the First Lady,” she said last week. “That’s where we went. I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base.”
But her account has been challenged, first by Sinbad, the comedian, who traveled with her, and then by news organizations, most notably the Washington Post, which awarded her four “Pinnochios” which it gives for major “whoppers.”

Asked today to square her recent descriptions with these accounts, Howard Wolfson, her spokesman, referred to several contemporaneous news accounts that described the region as hostile. He then added: “It is possible in the most recent instance in which she discussed this that she misspoke in regard to the exit from the plane, but there is no question if you look at contemporaneous accounts that she was going to a potential combat zone, that she was on the front lines.”
Asked at a later point in the call to clarify his comment, Mr. Wolfson said that news accounts at the time made clear that the area in which she was landing was “a potential combat zone and was hazardous.”
He said that in her memoir, “Living History,” she wrote about sniper fire in the hills and “clearly meant to say that” when she brought it up last week. He said she had described the event many times the same way and that “in one instance she said it slightly differently.”
A third reporter then asked about it, prompting Mr. Howard to read the relevant passage from her book, in which she wrote: “Due to reports of snipers in the hills around the airstrip, we were forced to cut short an event on the tarmac with local children.” He repeated that this was the one time in which she misspoke.
But this formulation was at least the second time in recent weeks that she described the sniper fire. She mentioned it on Feb. 29 in Waco, Tex., when she was rolling out her “red phone” commercial, recalling the trip to Bosnia and saying that the welcoming ceremony “had to be moved inside because of sniper fire.”

4. Lies & Liars
Completely fabricating a story isn't misspeak, unless we are in 1984 George Orwell timeline...then it's newspeak. Create a story to cover the facts, repeat.

Oh come on. Must we water down the importance of Watergate further with this appellation? Clinton got caught in a blunder. Can we move on?

What's next? Shoes-untied-gate?

18. While I agree with you this is silly
That is not a "blunder."

That is a "no one's really going to check this, right?"

Its just another gotchya in a campaign full of them, but the real damage for her is that everything else she claims now should come under tighter scrutiny.

I still object to the "gate" on this one. I agree with your assessment, but let's save the "gates" for much greater wrongdoing, shall we? :D

She repeated it many times. Are you actually siggesting that we should ignore something so egregious. SOmething that will be held over her head by the right wing in the general election?

20. All politicians are liars.
All of them. ALL of them. I know there's nothing we can do to stop it, but we can at least try not to play into the "gotcha" crap being pushed by the media because it's a cheap, easy story.

26. No, I'm attempting to add some perspective.
I know this is the issue du jour, but I really don't see it as being all that important. Much as I don't see Obama's flaky denials of what Wright said as being important. The sun rises in the east, water flows downhill, and politicians lie to burnish their credentials. Sorry, but I'm just not going to get outraged about this.

21. When she mentioned it during the debate
and then Sinbad popped up afterwards, it was good for a laugh but I don't think anyone took it too seriously - after all she was speaking partly off-the-cuff, and it's understandable that you might mix up or over-simplify details of an event that took place 12 years ago when there's been a lot of other stuff going on in your life. Hey, I do that all the time.

But I thought she really put her foot in it last week, because when giving her speech she opened with the story, exaggerations and all. Now, that may still be an honest mistake...but in this case it was the opening paragraphs of a prepared speech completely about national security, delivered at George Washington University, which is a cradle of foreign policy and strategic studies and was surely chosen for its significance in that field. So this was not an improvised answer to a question or a conversational reminiscence.

Her campaign already knew that her Bosnia trip had been the subject of some jokes and raised eyebrows. So it would have been logical to fact-check the hell out of it and see what was on the net before using the story as the opener of the speech. She could have just skipped the dramatic details and talked about the importance of her work and what she learned from seeing the suffering of war up close. Not doing so indicates either total carelessness or a failure to understand that it could and would be checked - neither of which is an encouraging attribute in a potential commander-in-chief.

Saying the candidate 'misspoke' when her remarks were the opening of a prepared speech just doesn't cut it.
