What has Jennifer Brunner done to improve the situation in Ohio?
Everybody knows how Ken Blackwell and his buddies were involved in countless voter irregularities in the months leading up to the election in 2004. Thank goodness that he is gone. Now my question is, what has Jennifer Bruner done to fix the damage that Blackwell caused? Will there be an excess of voting machines in some of our Democratic strongholds, unlike in 2004, when an estimated 20,000 just in the city of Columbus alone were turned away due to lack of machines? Have there been any reports of voter caging? etc

For anybody who knows, What has been done to solve these problems that we faced in 2004? We can't afford for the Rethugs to steal another election.

9. The primary went well
Why wouldn't the GE?

As I mentioned in my earlier post, if you're looking to swiftboat Brunner as Obama folks have tried to do against Clinton - by all means bring it on...

You didn't learn the first time, when your insults of Ohio helped Obama lose here.

15. I'm not looking to swiftboat Brunner.
And there is a difference between a semi-open primary and a general election.

Blackwell overspent his budget the last year he was there. She has had less flexibility because of monies not available because of the previous SOS stunted her budget by overspending his. She also inherited lawsuits from Blackwell which take her focus.

She is fighting the Repubs on DRE replacement with Op-scans because of cost.

IMO she is doing an excellent job though I'm not from OHIO you could PM mod mom or Botany to get more info. mod mom has been a champion for OHIO on election fraud and reform issues.

6. Botany is a veritable font of information on this subject
but I can tell you a few things off the top: first, she dumped ALL the voting machines in Cuyahoga County and the entire county now votes on paper ballots, and second, she has had no qualms about firing Board of Election heads who do not want to cooperate with her reforms.

10. Very good to hear. I particularly like how they finally got rid of the paperless systems in Cuyahoga

Hopefully some of the underfunded and undermanned precincts in Cleveland get more help come November so our voters don't have to wait in line for hours at a time or even leave.

5. Let's see... here in Cuyahoga County, she fired the entire Election board and replaced Diebold...
Edited on Sun Mar-23-08 10:10 PM by mikelewis
...touchscreen machines with real paper ballots. I've heard she's been a fight with the BOE in Stark County (I believe it's stark) and she has really stirred up some local controversy over her bold strokes. All in all... I'd say she's doing a pretty fucking awesome job (pardon my French). The Secretary of State's office had become infamous under Wild Bill Blackwell and though she hasn't totally earned my undying faith... she's starting to chip away at my cynicism.

and a strong woman at that, which brings her much criticism from the misogyny boys club here at DU GDP.

16. She's not a woman... she's the Secretary of State for Ohio...
And a damn fine one at that... and I actually have no idea what she looks like. I didn't pay any attention to her campaign since I never imagined a Democrat could beat Dr. Diebold no matter what they had or didn't have dangling between their legs. However, I do hope she's hot because that would be a bonus though not necessary... Sex appeal is not a requirement for being able to do a marvelous job. IMO I believe Helen Thomas is the best damn reporter in Washington and I don't find her all that hot. Though I would do her if she needed a good round of cunnilingus... she's earned it, that's for sure... I'd put a shine on the bald head of her little man in the boat in honor of her service to this nation... and be proud to do it.

of serious "flaws" from the 2004 Election known by the SOS but not publicly discussed (I would assume because of current litigation). I would hope this info comes to light before long to guarantee a paper ballot for Ohio.

Oh, and here's another interesting thread on story you may not have heard of.

OH SOS has at least 15 E-VOTING MACHINES LOCKED-UP TREATED AS A CRIME SCENE

23. 2004 is never mentioned... never... if anything it's used as a bell weather for what to expect...
...in 2008 and already there are concerns that this election might get completely FUBAR. If that happens... which it might in many areas... all the blame will cascade upon her head and the Ohio papers and news outlets will vilify her. Our media is about as liberal as the Wall Street Journal which means it's not liberal at all; but since it's a Democratic town they pretend to be. No one tells the truth here... the closest thing to a good paper is the Toledo Blade but they're not local so Cleveland gets Limbaugh Lite for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and so the people of Cleveland will never be told to care that 2004 was hijacked.

Thats why turn out will be so important... especially for Ohio.

I still cross my fingers though and hope that every vote will count and count for who it was cast for.

32. I'm in the Cleveland area and 2004 is mentioned all the time.
What world are you living in that it's not? Our election mess is constantly in the news, and it's not even as old as 2004--there were problems in the 2006 primary elections as well.

I certainly get more than "Limbaugh Lite" for my edification. Anyone in Cleveland with half a brain knows our vote was stolen in 2004 and Brunner is working hard to get it back.

thus far has been positive. She has been fighting to get paper trail but unsuccessful as of yet. Let's hope she can stay with it. Ohio really needs help in just about every aspect.

8. Not enough room here to detail all of it
She's cleaned up a great deal, but the GOP controlled county BOE's are still fighting her.

Suffice it to say, most of the large counties now have paper ballot systems, and those that still have electronic voting have to offer voters a choice of a paper ballot.

Visit her web site and you'll find out more.

http://www.sos.state.oh.us/

She's also backing the Dems on the Cuyahoga Co BOE who want to investigate and possibly pursue criminal charges against GOP'ers who fraudulently voted in the Dem primary.

If you're looking to find a reason to bash her because Obama lost Ohio...well, good luck with that.

I'm not bashing her at all, actually.

I just want a fair election. From what I hear, she's doing a terrific job so far.

And thanks for the information. It is very much appreciated.

19. She'll do her best
She's very thorough and passionate about fair elections. That said, she still has to deal w/ GOP controlled counties that fight her changes. They seem to be dragging her into court every other week, but she always prevails.

12. The problem is bigger than OH.
Brunner is doing a good job of cleaning OH up.

But, Rove has set up vote caging operations all over the place AND legit Dem voters are being kicked off the rolls via the "HELP AMERICA VOTE ACT" mandated voter reg data base.

We need to organize and encourage people to CHECK THEIR REGISTRATION between now and November.

26. Since Brunners election I have been in touch with her office
several times. In regard to paper ballots I am told that her office is for them but it is a matter of money. Ohioans need to contact their State Reps and demand paper ballots. IMO this issue is a national one and encourage all Americans to touch base with those politicians that can make a difference. Brunner has already stated publicly that our Diebold machines are easily hackable. AS a poll worker I can't wait until we are free of them.
