NYT: 2 McCain moments rarely mentioned

2. I have a theory about that incident

I suspect that back in 2004, McCain was realizing that his chances to get to the White House were rapidly diminishing, and for a brief moment, the notion of getting there through some sort of unity ticket may have seemed appealing.
