Bumper sticker...someone noticed
Finally..it's just a John Kerry bumper sticker. But I have not seen one..not a single bumper sticker for any candidate except in the parking lots of Meet-up locations. Other than that, nothing in this county. I saw Dean bumper stickers when I was up in New England last fall and some Kucinich, but here..nada, zilch, zippo. I'm happy to say I haven't seen any Bush/Cheney stickers either. I realized a while ago that as I obsessed over this or that latest poll, or how a given event would affect the election most people that I see as I go about my business are not giving the election any thought at all.Today, though, a woman stopped me and asked where I got the John Kerry bumper sticker. A sign of interest. It's like seeing the first robin in the spring.

Stories like these make me believe that the political climate is thawing!

3. I don't know, there are still operatives out there
Recent note:

A co-worker's car was recently stolen from our parking lot. We don't have a security guard in the lot, but the one we have does have a partial view of the lot while stationed inside. Probably doesn't cover the area where the co-worker parked.

He's the only one with a candidate's bumper sticker on his car. Kucinich.

Now, here's the kicker. Amidst all the fancier new cars, his was a beat up ratty old Volvo. Boxy, with corners.

Because we're situated right next to the Social Security office, we also get a bunch of ratty old beat up cars parked in the lot.

His gets stolen. Coincidence? Probably. But in this climate, you can't rule it out.

BTW, I drive a 99 Escort station wagon (when you drive 50+ miles a day, you gotta think gas mileage. Even though gas was $1.10-$1.20/gallon at the time.)

14. Update on the co-worker's car
It was found shortly at a local mall.

Apparently it was taken from our parking lot for a joy ride.

But it still wouldn't surprise me if it was "singled out".

2. I WISH I could sport one...
but it would be literally dangerous here in south Mississippi. These repukes around here are evil with a capital E and would probably burn my car. Naturally, one sees lots of "Bush Cheney" bumper stickers on the SUV's, along with "I Hunt Hogs with Dogs" and "It's A Child Not A Choice" stickers on pickup trucks.

4. I'm here in AllBushAllTheTime country (Florida). I put my Kerry yard sign
up and it has sat there in the breeze for a month. I saw my cousin working in a store and asked her how her daughter is doing (State worker). She bellowed "Everybody there is scared to death Bush is going to put them out of a job!" I bellowed something appropriate back. I remember when people pretty much kept their mouths shut in public.

5. Ironically
I live in Dallas and have seen tons of Kerry bumper stickers. Of course, I have seen way more Bush ones, but still.

6. I live on Long Island, land of apathy, apparently
Earlier on I had a Wesley Clark for President sign in the car window and that got some reaction - people asked who he was. This is after he'd been a regular on CNN and was a declared candidate...debates, the whole nine yards. What you see here if anything are leftover things from the burst of patriotism after 911..starting to get a little worn now, bumper stickers for local elections where the owner of said bumper probably has a personal stake in it, and hostile driving-related stickers. Oh and an occasional one warning about the car being empty in case of rapture. Overall, though, I think that American Idol, sports and manicures are the really riveting stuff in these parts. If a candidate could promise a free nail wrap he'd get a lot of votes.

7. I've got 3...
my Howard Dean sticker (still hanging in there...I'm replacing it soon with my "Kerry Voter On Loan from Dean" one), Texas Democrat, and Re-Defeat Bush.

Of course, I see a lot of rolled eyes, and assholes in SUVs gun past me and jump in front, but I do have surprises too.

One day at Lowe's in Garland (total freeper area), a woman who had pulled up next to me and her mother paused for a moment and asked me where I got my Texas Democrat sticker. I gave them a lot of information about the Democrat clubs hereabouts.

THAT felt great.

8. I've got two on my pickup truck.
I left my old Dean for America one up, and put a John Kerry for President sticker on the opposite end of it. I live on the edge of rurual Virginia, but I haven't had any problems in the three years I've had a bumper sticker on (first with Re-Elect Gore in 2004, then Dean, and now Kerry).

I do see a few Bush/Cheney stickers on SUVs every now and then, as well as "We Vote Pro-Life." Very, very few though compared to 2000.

10. I'm seeing more and more Kerry stickers
here in Minneapolis.
There were two in one row of my church's parking lot this morning.

(I was in the car with the Kucinich sticker, which I'm keeping until convention.)

11. I've seen quite a few Bush-Cheney stickers
Edited on Sun May-09-04 11:33 PM by tritsofme
in my Chicago suburb, and suprisingly, even on the highway, I've seen no Kerry stickers.

I found it very odd that the neighbor kid (17 or 18) has a Bush sticker on his car, and yet whenever I have talk with the parents they seem utterly apathetic.

13. Guess it depends where you live.
I see Kerry stickers all over the place - probably fifty of them a day. Where I live and work isn't exactly typical, I freely acknowledge, but remember that its still very very early.

17. Saw a Bush-Cheney sticker on a Lincoln SUV--someone hit it--big dent
Someone--not me--hit the guy right smack on his Bush sticker. Bumper had a nice deep dent. It may have been an accident, of course, but we might be looking Democrat road rage.

This is New Jersey!

By the way, I was hit from behind shortly after I put on a "Nobody died when Clinton Lied" sticker a few months ago. Guy said it was an accident. This has not stopped me from putting a Kerry sticker on my car and pickup.

12. in LA
I'm seeing a lot of Dean and Kucinich stickers on cars, as well as a lot of Bush/Cheney stickers, but starting to see an increasing number of Kerry stickers. People might just be waiting until he picks his runningmate.

15. Any kind of candidate bumpersticker here is rare
Seattle, WA. You see more flag decals than anything. Haven't seen a single Bush/Cheney, a couple of Kerry, some Dean and Kucinich. One Clark last month. At meetups, of course, they cluster.

16. Similar in my area
I'm in Santa Rosa, Ca, and haven't noticed many stickers of any kind. I did, though, bust my gut laughing at one that had BUSH in big letters, and little letters spelling bullshit. I've been asking friends to put a Kerry bumpersticker on their car, or wear a button, but have found that most will not, even though they are planning to vote for Kerry. They either say that they don't want political stuff on their car, or that they are too afraid to stick their neck out. But I read somewhere how even little things can create change, and I really feel that is true. And, I was similarly surprised by a woman at Costco the other day who saw my Kerry button, and wanted to know where to get one. It's kind of ironic that Costco will not let the democratic clubs set up outside their store, but did let Arnold repugs have a booth inside their store to get sigs for some initiative. That aside, it seems impt that both political parties have visibility, and wearing a button or a bumper sticker for a democratic candidate should not be seen as marginal or fear-inducing.

20. Portland, Ore.
Lots of anti-Bush stickers, a few Kerry stickers, lots of anti-war stickers still (or peace messages).

Then, in the suburbs or on the highway, you see more BushCheney (bleah) but also a lot of Democratic stuff. Still, those Bush stickers get me down. I want to run the driver off the road, take them by the collar, shake them, and say, WHAT ARE YOU -- A FUCKING IDIOT?! I try to stay within city boundaries as much as possible. I get depressed if I have to venture to Beaverton for some reason.

I've been fooled a few times with what I assumed were Bush stickers, then I pulled up closer and they said Bush/Satan or BushCheated or Bush On Mars 2004 or Bush1984. I love that. It completely changes my view of the driver, of course! I try to give positive reinforcement whenever it seems safe to do so.
