Hey people. We know the knocks about Kerry needing to get a solid campaign message and his being dull. Well, one of the strongest ways to establish a singular, strong message is via the choosing a campaign theme song. Now, I like Tom Petty as much as the next guy, as much as one can, I suppose, but "Won't Back Down" just ain't cutting it. It's slow and kinda dull, and that's not gonna help Kerry at all. I'm the type of person who faces a situation with a new folder on my mp3 player, so. Reaching into my Bring It On! folder (see, I TOLD you I'd jump on the Kerry bus before long), I suggest these as far better campaign themes for the Kerry campaign.
Kerry on His Motorcycle - "Life is a Highway," Tom Cochrane.
It's a GREAT road tune, AND a subtle jab at Bush's Yes, America Can...ada bus all at the same time! Then again, as Jon Stewart said last night, "Mr. Kerry, sir? Americans don't really...UNDERSTAND subtlety."
Kerry on the Past - "1999," Prince.
This song's useful because it's a song of optimism about the future. Now, he can say, "Remember 1999? Remember how much we as Americans looked FORWARD to the new millennium? Remember how GREAT this country was in 1999? Look at how far we've come in 5 years, America! Instead of it being 2004, we're just stuck again in 1991!" Prince better not be one of his...weird moods when Kerry calls, though. That might be a problem.
Kerry on Vietnam - "Born in the U.S.A.," Bruce Springsteen.
I think Springsteen would definitely be up for allowing Kerry to use the song - Reagan the Movie "Star" he is not. Boss is a well-known Democrat, and the song REALLY fits Kerry's situation involving the war. Sure, he wasn't a middle-class workin' guy before going to Vietnam, but it sure defines his worldview afterwards. Kerry should at least ask.
Kerry on Gays - "Some Girls (Dance with Women)," J.C. Chasez.
I keed, I keed.
Kerry on Relating to Young People - "The Remedy (I Won't Worry)," Jason Mraz.
It's fast, it's fun, and it even has a couple lines on distrusting a certain lying wartime administration! It'll work as relating Kerry as hip to the concerns of young people. Maybe the best moment of the Clark campaign was the Outkast Fist Pounding, this song can help Kerry on that objective.
Kerry on Clinton - "Don't Know What You Got ('Til It's Gone)," Cinderella.
I've already seen hints of this in interviews with Kerry, reporters (mostly those like Woodruff) wanting Kerry to almost disavow Clinton. This could represent his answer to that - "We didn't know what we had when he had it, and now thast we've got Bush, we sure wish we had him again." Maybe a nice, firm "Clinton was better than Bush is, period" would work too.
Kerry on Defeating the "Popular Wartime President" - "The Final Game," Jerry Goldsmith.
It's the theme to the movie Rudy, damn!
Kerry on Big Theme Song Closer in Boston - "You Raise Me Up," Josh Groban.
Over the winter break, my mom had this song playing in the car, and I totally had a vision. The song playing, volunteers and workers singing along, it's a song that Kerry can use about the American people, working FOR them. It's a huge swelling ballad, and better defines the man from Bush. Can you imagine BUSH caring about the American people so much? Please.
Any ideas?
Later.
