Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright recipient of three presidential commendations.

Considered a preacher par excellence, the Reverend Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. was born on September 22, 1941, in Philadelphia. His parents, the Reverend Jeremiah Wright, Sr. and Dr. Mary Henderson Wright, were his earliest influences, instilling in him the possibility of balancing the intellectual with the spiritual. Armed with this philosophical upbringing, Wright has pastored Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ since 1972, seeing its membership grow from eighty0seven adult members to a congregation of nearly 10,000. Wright's early education took place in Philadelphia's public schools. From there, he went on to earn a B.A. and an M.A. from Howard University, an M.A. from the University of Chicago and a doctorate in divinity from United Theological College, where he studied under the eminent Samuel DeWitt Proctor.

Wright takes seriously not only the call to worship but also the call to take action as mandated by the Gospel. Under his leadership, Trinity adopted the motto "Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian" and has set out to make activism within and on behalf of the African American community a key aspect of the church's mission. An outspoken community leader, Wright has been vocal in making once-taboo issues, such as AIDS, a priority within the African American church leadership and service. His commitment to political activism, coupled with his dedication to the African American sermonic tradition, has made him a highly sought-after speaker nationally and internationally.

Wright is the recipient of numerous awards, including three honorary doctorates and three presidential commendations. An accomplished musician and author, Wright has written four books, numerous articles and countless sermons and was named one of Ebony's top fifteen preachers. In addition to national and international ministry, Wright serves on several boards of directors and committees. Married to the Reverend Ramah Reed Wright, Wright has five children and three grandchildren.

Wright was interviewed by http://www.thehistorymakers.com/biography/biography.asp?bioindex=331&category=religionMakers">The HistoryMakers on January 11, 2002.

Which is why turning him into a mere caricature was really the crime of this campaign.

And there are those who are upset because he may not be used as a whipping boy this week in order to continue to discredit the Obama campaign. They wanted to keep him as someone representing only 1/75 of a man until the Obama campaign went down. And these folks are bold enough to post that shit here, and try to make Obama people feel guilty that something else, that's fucking illegal, has come up. I find that kind of nerve unbelievable.

Just the thought of what this man has had to go through, as well as Obama and his family in reference to this crazy ass shit we have witnessed this week, all in the name of winning, has really left me very disenchanted that we could be that mean as a society.

To allow the media to have defined for us that this type of slice and dice propaganda without context is totally acceptable in order to assassinate the character of a presidential candidate via guilt by association.

This event, more than any other in current times, has given me a whole new outlook on what this country is really all about, if it doesn't change.....like by November.

14. This despicable shit that has been pulled in this campaign
makes me want to cry out. Where are the progressives around here that support Hillary? Where in the fuck are they?

But Obama warned me about this....I just wasn't prepared!

The pundits, the pundits like to slice-and-dice.......Now even as we speak, there are those who are preparing to divide us -- the spin masters, the negative ad peddlers who embrace the politics of anything goes.

from the Hillary campaign.

Does anyone here actually believe that the Clinton doesn't have paid operatives

"The f$cking carelessness of tarring this accomplished, (racist), dedicated community builder"...
...who has no place in our party.

If we start letting racist, bigot venom take root in our party, in any form, from any quarter, where do WE draw the line?
Where is the moral high ground?
How do we start judging what racism is just enough?

We screw ourselves.
It's hypocritical to take a stand against one man for racist comments and not another.
And to use the Church, the House of God to do this race and hate baiting.
Absolute crap.

127. You're new to DU - so am I,
But your post is kind of unreasonable. How can you judge whether what someone says to uplift a group of people is racist or not.

Have you heard those video clips in context or are you only relying on what MSM has been feeding you? Jeremiah Wright is not "a racist bigot" as Geraldine Ferraro and you have described him to be. He is the shepherd of his church and he is speaking to his members' emotions - relating with them, as a pastor should.

Because of this, it's not entirely correct for you to make judgments about how Jeremiah Wright leads his church, especially if the only contact you've had with this church's experience is from 10-sec. sound bites that don't show the WHOLE truth.

145. I agree with Geraldine... and defending this is dangerous... read on please...
These are dangerous times.
How we decide now will form our future.
Are you going to be consistent, or are you going to forge new lines.
Malleable lines?

OK...

Those sound bites were made public by his church.
This is what he promotes.

You know, it is the moments when someone lashes out, those short takes that give a window into the person's soul.
When it has happened in the past the people were excoriated.
They should be.
Now, by defending this type of behavior we, as a party that had no tolerance for this BS have entered dangerous territory.
Choose wisely.
Doing so is sometimes painful, but right is right.

If it wasn't toxic, Obama shouldn't have let Wright go.
He did.
He also condemned the words.

The man misused his church and his power to spread hate.
It is sad, but it is true.
Obama kneeling to this provider of poison has damaged himself.
I, as a democrat understand CLEARLY why it has happened.

It has happened to others for far less.
Even though Obama had an uplifting message about hope and unity, that all rings a bit hollow now.

129. Sad for the members of this church . . .
All of this negativity towards their church and snippets of sermons from their pastor must REALLY be hurting this church community. What the media, and Obama's opponents, are doing to their pastor, their church, and their community must be horrible!

The media is being unfair. Churches are supposed to be a place of safety not a place of media inquiry and rebuke.

120. OK... Here we go
You know, that I have to do this is sad.
I guess you haven't paid much attention during the past days.

What is even worse is Wright did this from a church.
A place where he is supposed to minister.
A place for feeding people with love, hope, helping them get over hardships.
Not inciting people with hatred, with racist remarks, and divisiveness.
No.
And for Obama to have sat arond for 20 years and listen to this crap and then peddle he was an agent of "change".
Sorry, I'm pissed.
We have two candidates that are damaged goods.
What now? Put a coat of paint over it and "hope"?
I want to scream.

So here you go:

"U.S. of KKK-A!"
Jeremiah Wright

"America created AIDS to kill black people."
Jeremiah Wright
I guess he meant Chinese Americans created AIDS.

"The government gives them the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a three-strike law and then wants us to sing 'God Bless America.' No, no, no, God damn America, that's in the Bible for killing innocent people. God damn America for treating our citizens as less than human. God damn America for as long as she acts like she is God and she is supreme."
Jeremiah Wright
Who's "them" and who's "our citizens"?

"Jesus was a poor black man who lived in a country and who lived in a culture, that was controlled by rich white people! The Romans were rich. The Romans were Italians, which means they were European, which means they were white -- and the Romans ran everything in Jesus' country."
Jeremiah Wright
Black vs. White; no racial connotations?

Wright gives Farrakhan an award.
Farrakhan isn't a racist anti-semite?
Wonder how that goes over with the Jewish wing of our party?

That's quite a record for not being racial centric.
This is stuff he sold to the public.
Not racist? Not venomous?

Unfortunately this isn't over.
You can be sure they are digging at abc news and other places to break this even wider.
To find out when Obama was present and what was said.

They caught Obama lying about what he knew once already.

Obama says he cannot separate himself from Wright?
Wright is not family!? NO Obama, he is a choice. You could leave as Oprah did.

Playing this down makes the party seem like hypocrites on race.
We have shifted the line for evaluating it, so now it's malleable.
That is ultra dangerous. It's stupid.

The post 911 slam on America along with the above is not the stuff presidents are made of.
It does not give confidence about "hope", "change", or being a "uniter".
Quite the opposite. What we have is a candidate that kneeled before a racist divider and sat passively, listening to his poison for 20 years.
Those are the cold, hard facts. Not nice, but reality.
And now our party is in a bad situation.
This invective is the type of stuff that cuts really deep.
This, Hillary, nobody coming out of this as a clear winner, FL and MI.
I'm going to puke.
Then I'm heading out for a beer or three.
There ain't much Happy in this Happy Hour.
See you folks later.

calling them racist. I'll defer to the white members of his Church who have listened to his sermons and say he's not.

:eyes: that you have to do this. whatfuckingever. you mean copy and paste? you posted the same fucking bullshit snippets as fox and limbaugh. you think people here haven't read and watched and examined and debunked that crap?

i might be concerned with your amazing "findings" and felt a bit sympathetic after dismissing them had you actually taken the time to research the context and used some critical thinking skills.

this is a swiftboat/smear at best- i thought progressives were opposed this kind of bs.

YOU are "what's sad," continuing to spread this damaging disinformation.

144. Progrssives are opposed to racist bs...
Edited on Sat Mar-22-08 01:40 AM by Johnny Battleground
... and defending it in all its forms.
What is damaging is defending it.
Blurring the line for racist comments.
Giving a pass.
Get it?

You call his words, his tape, his vitriol "disinformation"?
His giving Farrakhan and award misinformation?

What is damaging is this reverend.
HIS WORDS.
On video.
This isn't some kind of make believe.
He doesn't sound like any kind of uniter I know.
Obama had the chance to "change" but didn't.

People out there on the fence are not stupid.
They see it for what it is.
It doesn't need context as there is NO EXCUSE FOR IT WHATSOEVER.
And when they hear people like you defending it, they will think... what type of party condones racism?

In the past we proudly said "NOT THIS PARTY".
Now?

I was a member of his church for years and it is a church to be proud of--in terms of him and his accomplishments and intelligence and the caliber of the membership.

Trinity is a church of excellence in all regards. Most people in Chicago know this to be true. It's too bad that people further away see a few vignettes and form totally incorrect opinions.

I plant to attend church at Trinity very soon to lend my support during this trying time.

Why are the most sleazy... lurid... incendiary... defamatory...anti-Obama threads, some with clear racist undertones...

Is this a freeper invasion?

Are they "gaming the board" somehow?

How is that done?

I have noticed some of the people with the most inexplicable allegiance to Clinton, considering her historical Bush complicity... have posted here forever... OLD DUers

I mean, are progressives welcome here? or is this just some primary campaign phenomenon?

against his attackers anywhere fill me with admiration.

135. Has anyone here ever been to a black church service?
I have. And they are often quite different than the white bread stuff that most of us grew up on.
When you watch/listen to Rev. Write preach. When you hear the sounds of the congregation in the background.
For me, that is the black experience at church.

As Barack said in his now-famous "race" speech, (I paraphrase here, "That one hour on Sunday when
we are in church is the most segregated hour...").

Does anyone here have a black friend? I do.
And that very fact can make a lot of difference in how you look at this whole situation.

Really, it's just a matter of black and white. And brown. And many other colors that we don't know.

136. The Reverend Wright is a powerful and charismatic
preacher, but there's not much of Ghandi or Martin Luther King in his make-up or his message. I'm voting for Obama, but having listened to a fair sample of Wright's sermons, it's not hard to see why some people might find them a tad disturbing. I heard a well-honed and perhaps understandable, sense of grievance, but not a lot about inter-racial healing. A measure of abuse may keep you humble, but in excess it's bound to lead to resentment.
