Lieberman Says Clark Misleads Voters

NEW YORK The director of Senator Joseph Lieberman's presidential campaign says General Wesley Clark is misleading voters by not giving full details about Clark's work as a lobbyist in Washington after he retired from the military in 2000.

Reacting to the release of Clark's federal financial disclosure form late Friday, Craig Smith, the campaign director, and Brian Hardwick, his deputy, said in a conference call on Saturday that the general was "profiting from the revolving door" between the Pentagon and private business and likened his situation to that of Vice President Dick Cheney and his former employer, Halliburton.

****************************************

Sounds like Lieberman is getting pretty desparate, comparing Clark to Cheney? I guess, since nothing else has worked for Joe, he might as well just go negative against anyone who outpolls him in any state.

One honest question though - Does Joe Lieberman poll first in any state?

28. This makes tactical sense for Joe L. If he KOs Clark, he's the anti-Dean
I don't support Lieberman. But he's got no attack dogs so he has to do his own heavy lifting if he wants to establish himself as the anti-Dean. Right now Clark is his biggest obstacle. Look at the polls:

It's Dean in the mid20s, and Clark, Lieberman, and Gephardt bunched up around 10%. If you expect Gep to fade after a weak 2nd in Iowa, then it's hot Clark on Lieberman action for the position of anti-Dean. But the mythical antiDean must arise before Saturn aligns with Neptune, or at least before the 2nd SuperTuesday in March.

So Lieberman's tactics make perfect sense, as long as you're a hack who doesn't mind trashing a fellow Democrat. That said, I will gladly vote for Lieberman over Bush. I'd rather be shot than thrown on a hand grenade. Plus vomiting is a good way to work your lower and upper abs.

3. Clark campaign to Lieberman - You are a sad mofo...
"We heard about this Lieberman attack more in sadness than in anger and believe Senator Lieberman should be spending more time worrying about Al Gore's assessment of his candidacy and less time worrying about records that Wes Clark made public months ago."

he "should be spending more time worrying about Al Gore's assessment of his candidacy". OUCH!!

6. Yeah, this article is from Monday
There was a thread on it earlier this week. It's not going to get too much traction since his work was limited to benign "causes". ie no weapons etc.
Joe was hoping for a win in Oklahoma but in just two weeks both Clark and Dean shot past him, (34% -23% respectively)
Joe was 10% two weeks ago and remains at 10%. BWHAHAHA

7. I cant stand Lieberman.

In this case though, he SORT of has a point.

I wouldn't put Clark in the Cheney camp though. That's pretty crazy.

Clark was a lobbyist and Democrats are supposedly against that sort of thing. If he gets elected he should distance himself and be accountable for his financial ties.

I know that EVERYONE here; no matter who you support, has had more than enough of this jerk!!

I think it's high time we let him know!

Go to his site and share your feelings about how he is conducting his campaign.

I already sent him a nasty e-mail about a month ago but it looks like time for another.

the guy is *pathetic* and completely out of touch with the urgent need to unite against the real enemy: BushCo

fucking scum a-hole, shut up already or just come out of your Republican closet, lizard.

on edit: just sent a 2-chili-pepper e-mail but doubt it will have any more effect on the scumbag than the first one did. Yes, I encourage bombardment.

21. Bill Maher's comment about Lieberman

Last night on Larry King, Bill Maher said - Joe seems to think that George Bush would be a good president if only he were Jewish (meaning that Joe is just like GWB except he is Jewish).

With a decent voting record and service to the people of CT and this country, Joe is disgracing himself - the way he is acting is really really sad.

Of course there is a kernel of fact in every dig he makes. I see on here non-Clark supporters saying - oh yeah terrible, but he has a point. Those same folks would not be saying this if Joe was attacking their candidate.

The point is Joe is taking a kernel of fact and twisting it into a nonfact. It is no better than the ads against Howard Dean. Why aren't people universally condemning Joe's actions the way they condemned those ads?

switch party affiliation and run against Bush in the repub primary.

That would be the most honest Lieberman act of the season.

26. Lieberman seems to have a particular dislike of Clark
Can't figure that one out. It seems almost personal. When Lieberman was left out of the Iowa debate the first person he blamed was Clark. Seems like he should have taken it up with McAuliffe.

27. Bus Week gives Joe some credit for Enron-

http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/02_39/b3801138.htm

"Members of Congress who were receiving hefty campaign contributions from accounting, finance, high tech, and other industries defanged attempts to curb the kind of egregious behavior that led directly to the Enron Corp. (ENRNQ ) disaster. Congress should be held accountable for its own conflicts of interest and bad behavior.

In a new book, former Securities & Exchange Commissioner Arthur Levitt, does just that. Take on Wall Street: What Wall Street and Corporate America Don't Want You to Know. What You Can Do to Fight Back (excerpted in this issue) is a history of how Congress betrayed investors in the 1990s. Levitt, a lifelong Democrat, describes how Democratic Senator and Vice-Presidential candidate Joe Lieberman led the charge to block the SEC from enforcing an accounting rule to expense stock options. The accounting profession's own self-policing organization, the independent Financial Accounting Standards Board, had recommended it unanimously in 1993. Lieberman, together with Republican and New Democrat legislators, passed a Senate resolution saying the FASB stock option proposal would have "grave consequences for America's entrepreneurs." It stopped the SEC from enforcing the ruling, and FASB backed down, requiring only the disclosure of stock option grants in the footnotes of income statements. Reasonable people can disagree on the merits of expensing stock options. But the bully-boy tactics by Congress to block the SEC and the accounting profession's own independent board is unconscionable."

32. Well I've been bothered by Clark's defense lobbyist jobs..

and the boards he sits on for various companies and groups.

Wall Street Journal, 9/18/03

IN ANNOUNCING his presidential campaign, Wesley K. Clark promoted himself as the candidate best qualified to prosecute the war on terror. As a businessman, he has applied his military expertise to help a handful of high-tech companies try to profit from the fight Since retiring from a 34-year Army career in 2000, Gen. Clark has become : chairman of a suburban Washington technology-corridor start-up, managing director at an investment firm, a director at four other firms around the country and an advisory-board member for two others. For most, he was hired to help boost the companies' military business. .

That's EXACTLY what Cheney did for Haliburton.

<snip>

While he was originally hired as a consultant by WaveCrest Laboratories LLC, Dulles, Va.,to help find military buyers for its promising new electric motor, Gen. Clark became the company's chairman in April, and has also focused on selling products in the commercial market. But Gen. Clark's knowledge of and ties with, the military and government markets have been a large part of his appeal to potential employers.

Stephens Inc., the large, politically connected Little Rock investment firm, hired him to boost its aerospace business shortly after he gave up his NATO command. He left Stephens last year and opened his own consultancy, Wesley K. Clark & Associates.
While Gen. Clark was at Stephens, the firm also marketed him to clients such as Silicon Energy-in which Stephens held a stake - "as a good person to help us understand the federal procurement process," says Mr. Woolard. The company was trying to enter the government market, and Gen. Clark explained the process "and contacted people at the Navy and Air Force and told them what we had," Mr. Woolard says. (Silicon Energy was acquired earlier this year by Itron Inc., and Gen. Clark no longer advises the firm).

Time Domain Corp., a Huntsville, Ala., advanced wireless-technology company, recruited Gen. Clark to become an adviser in February 2002 through one of its chief operating officers, who had been a colonel under his NATO command during the Bosnia campaign. Gen. Clark has counseled the company on how to answer Pentagon concerns that its low-power radar system might interfere with global positioning and communications systems, as well as to better craft that technology for military use. board of Entrust, at the request of CEO William Conner, who had served with him on a Pentagon advisory panel.
