ABC News: Clinton Woos Superdelegates at Private Dinner

http://abcnews.go.com/WN/Vote2008/story?id=4454683&page=1

Sen. Hillary Clinton Wines and Dines Superdelegates At Private Home Dinners

<snip>

Private Dinner at Clinton's Home

Trying to win over those who are undecided, Clinton wined and dined 17 superdelegates this week at her posh Washington home.

At the dinner was Rep. Heath Shuler, D-N.C., who had once endorsed former Sen John Edwards' presidential run, and represents a conservative district in western North Carolina.

He said he pointed out to Clinton that even with Edwards on the Democratic ticket in 2004, Bush-Cheney won his district with 60 percent of the vote.

How, Shuler asked Clinton, could she compete?

"I've been winning rural and swing districts all over the country," Clinton told him, according to sources at the dinner. Shuler remains uncommitted.

Rep. Jason Altmire, D-Pa., also attended the dinner at Clinton's home, but he had a different question.

"If Sen. Obama finishes this process after all the states have participated and he's still leading in the delegate count and he's won more states and he has a higher popular vote, why would a superdelegate at that point choose to go the other way?" he asked Clinton.

Clinton: Superdelegates and Independent Judgment
Clinton was asked about the superdelegate question by ABC News at a press conference Friday.

"Superdelegates, so called, are in the process because many of them are longtime elected officials, longtime party activists who can exercise independent judgment about who is best able to both present the Democratic Party case and win the White House," Clinton said.

8. She is narcissistic
Clinton is so arrogantly determined to take "what is a golden year for Democrats to take the W.H. and Congress" and to turn it into dust.

2. two NC candidates for Gov have already endorsed Obama
Shuler is a Blue Dog and conservative on some issues, he might fall for it.

Don't know. His district is split between ultra liberal and ultra conservative.

6. Hillary wines and dines them, and Obama pressures them

Dear Congressional Black Caucus Member,
Over the last several weeks, voters in CBC districts have spoken with clarity about their choice for President—they overwhelmingly support Barack Obama. But the clear mandate they've laid down is threatened by those in your ranks who as superdelegates may break away from their constituents to vote for Hillary Clinton.

The Congressional Black Caucus has worked hard to protect the political voice of Black Americans. You took the lead in 2000 and 2004, insisting that all votes be counted and that they count. Using your status as a superdelegate in 2008 to undermine the people's will would be a tragic reversal.

I'm writing to ask that you use your power as a superdelegate to amplify the voice of the informed, engaged, and diverse electorate in your district and across Black America, not silence it. I urge you to make it clear that as a superdelegate, you will support the voters' will.

We deserve elections determined by the electorate, not by insiders. And we need you to stand with us, as we speak in a strong voice about who we wish to see as the Democratic nominee.

15. Hear the will of the people? That is pressure?
From what I have read, it looks like people are asking the elected public officials that represent them who are super delegates to reflect their choice for president and some of these super delegates have political ties with the Clintons going back to Bill's administration and are dedicated to throwing their support to Hillary disregarding their own constituencies and pledged delegates.

That is their choice and under the rules, they can do that.

9. HRC after Monica
I thought I'd throw something out there for discussion. Does anyone think HRC may have remained with Bill after the Monica affair/impeachment because HE promised to help her gain the presidency? Note all the "good works" he's done since leaving office (and buddying up to the Bushes), and he has powerful connections. Perhaps he told her to stay with him and he'd help her reach her goal? Food for thought?
