41. Reality Check
"In 1985, a 31-year-old North Carolina lawyer named John Edwards stood before a jury and channeled the words of an unborn baby girl.”

"She speaks to you through me," the lawyer went on in his closing argument. "And I have to tell you right now — I didn't plan to talk about this — right now I feel her. I feel her presence. She's inside me, and she's talking to you." http://www.nytimes.com/2004/01/31/politics/campaign/31EDWA.html?ex=1390885200&en=4fb97ac07a96f186&ei=5007&partner=USERLAND

If Edwards is the VP nominee I can hear the debate question now: Mr. Edwards, the NY Times has reported your ability to channel unborn children. In closing arguments you stated "She speaks to you through me. "And I have to tell you right now — I didn't plan to talk about this — right now I feel her. I feel her presence. She's inside me, and she's talking to you." http://www.nytimes.com/2004/01/31/politics/campaign/31EDWA.html?ex=139...

Do you really have the ability to channel unborn children (like John Edwards of Crossing Over ) or did you lie to the jury in making your closing arguments (which is reminiscent of a certain democratic president who lied under oath to a grand jury)? In addition, doesn't either answer to this question really raise serious doubt about whether you are fit to be a heartbeat away from assuming the highest office in this land?

The Republicans can destroy Edwards and the Democratic ticket with this alone. Of course they won't stop there. They will also hammer home that Edwards is just another example of how the Democrats really aren't for the working class: “ Edwards, who comes from a state where banking is big business, played a critical role in brokering legislation to allow banks to sell mutual funds and insurance, and to engage in other speculative ventures. This law, worth hundreds of billions to the banks, blasted a gigantic hole in the Glass-Steagal banking law’s firewall of protections designed to prevent the kinds of bank collapses that marked the Great Depression of the ’30s — meaning that it put the money of Joe Six-Pack depositors at risk.” (A Populist Make-Over Meet John Edwards, the Corporate Man, http://www.dissidentvoice.org/Jan04/Ireland0129.htm

“Over time, Mr. Edwards became quite selective about cases. Liability had to be clear, his competitors and opponents say, and the potential award had to be large. "He took only those cases that were catastrophic, that would really capture a jury's imagination," Mr. Wells, a defense lawyer, said. "He paints himself as a person who was serving the interests of the downtrodden, the widows and the little children. Actually, he was after the cases with the highest verdict potential. John would probably admit that on cross-examination." http://www.nytimes.com/2004/01/31/politics/campaign/31EDWA.html?ex=1390885200&en=4fb97ac07a96f186&ei=5007&partner=USERLAND

…."For the one or two who got a substantial jury verdict," said George W. Miller Jr., a former state representative in North Carolina who practices law in Durham, "there were 99 that did not get anything, either because they were not able to finance litigation or their claim was questionable." Mr. Edwards ……. opposed state legislation that would have helped all families with brain-damaged children and not just those few who win big malpractice awards.” http://www.nytimes.com/2004/01/31/politics/campaign/31EDWA.html?ex=1390885200&en=4fb97ac07a96f186&ei=5007&partner=USERLAND

8. Let's caption these photos!

JK: John, what is that on your lip?
JE: Wait a second ... I got it ...

JK: I'm just kidding, John, that thing is always on your lip.
JE: Okay, haha - real funny, John...

Off-camera: You get him again, John? Hey Johnny, how many times has Kerry gotten you with that lip gag?

JE: That Kerry's a lot taller than I remember...

JK: I've already decided on you for VP, but keep a straight face 'cuz we're keeping it a secret until the convention...

All kidding aside, I have to say that they really look like a President and VP: The steady, experienced leader with the youthful, energetic sidekick ... :toast:

I really hope Kerry goes with either Clark or Edwards. Both are well known, and popular.

Edwards is a very effective speaker and is charismatic. He'd help Kerry a great deal.

Edwards was my choice for Prez. I would be very pleased to see him as Kerry's VP. It would be great to be able to feel excited about the upcoming election again. Please don't get me wrong. I'm not dissing Kerry, and fully intend to vote for him, but some of the spark has gone out for me. Now, if my man Edwards is on the ticket...WOOHOO, I'm back.
Kinda scared to get my hopes up. This ole heart can only take so much.

15. Edwards is by far the strongest VP candidate in every category except...
Electoral votes. But it's questionable if ANY democrat can deliver a swing state to Kerry. Edwards has no political baggage and is not really a liability. He is a good campaigner and will destroy Chenney in a debate. Unless we find a candidate that almost guarantees us a good swing state, I say Edwards is the best pick.

16. Clark can deliver Arkansas with Clinton support.....
Edited on Wed Apr-21-04 11:02 PM by deminflorida
No way Bush and Co. can win Clark's home state with Bill Clinton's feet on the ground there in Sep, Oct.

The military here in NW Florida is feeling the heat because of Iraq. Military families are taking a beating on the back-to-back Iraq deployments. These communities traditionally have secured Republican strong-holds in this important swing state. Not any more, lots of time on the ground here in and around these military communities by General Clark laying out our exit strategy for Iraq, and that's it....Florida falls like a rock into Kerry's column.

Lets not be stupid people, unless you want to lose in November and I most certainly DO NOT, then DON'T SUPPORT THE IDEA OF TWO SENATORS WHO VOTED FOR THE IRAQ WAR.

YOU WILL OFFER INDEPENDENT VOTERS NO CLEAR CHOICE OTHER THAN BUSH. THEY WILL NOT CHANGE HORSES IN MID-STREAM.

The headlines after election day will read:

AMERICAN CONCERN FOR NATIONAL SECURITY CAUSES NEW ENGLAND LIBERAL KERRY TO LOSE TO BUSH IN A LANDSLIDE!

Oh my God, my hands are sweating....

33. Yeah, I can imagine!
In 2000 Cheney destroyed Joe Lieberman, who has a hell of a lot more experience than Edwards.

How will Edwards handle the military, national security issues? Remember Cheney was Sec of Def during Gulf War I.

Looking good, & being charming will not cut it.

38. Cheney and Holy Joe had a love-fest, and didn't cross swords at all...
It was sort of a becalmed, 50-50 break-even, neither candidate bloodying the other.

Even-keeled Cheney-Lieberman debate takes global view
10/06/2000 CNN
<snip>
"...a good debate that steered clear of personal attacks and covered important issues..."
<snip>
"...The exchange, though spontaneous and good-humored, marked a significant moment in the night's proceedings. The give-and-take between both No. 2 men on the major party tickets was never testy or acrimonious, as was the debate between their principals,Vice President Al Gore and Texas Gov. George W. Bush..."

Remember, Edwards is a seasoned trial attorney, and has gone up against some very tough combatants in the courtroom involving high-profile cases. And won.

Cheney would come off like a miserable wretch next to the sharp and nimble Edwards, IMO.

23. I was at the Sheraton Bal Harbor in Miami Beach
I went to the event to hear Kerry speak and almost fell asleep. I have to be honest, he was not exciting, and neither was the crowd. The attendance was much lower than I expected (maybe 300 were at the speech) for a Miami Beach rally, and people were even walking out in groups halfway through the speech. I am not sure that Kerry is going to pull this thing out if that event is any indication. Someone tell me I am wrong.

26. Dear John Kerry, Bob Shrum, Jim Johnson
....For G**’s sake pick John Edwards as Kerry VP, there really is no one who rivals him as the best choice for Kerry’s VP! Just nominate him, getting him on TV in a Campaign about him (don’t let him overshadow Kerry, however easy it would be ///) and then get him a hotel room in Ohio and let him go on trips to PA, WV as well as well as the occasional fly over to FL, NC, AR, MI, MN, IA and WI… oh man we should have nominated him oh well… but seriously pick him, ya gotta!

37. These two can bring it -- and they complement each other...
Kerry/Edwards
New England Brahmin/up from less-than-privileged beginnings
Vietnam vet, military background/domestic and social issues
Older/younger (although marginally, just in their image)
Long-time Democrat/future Democratic leadership
Thinker, introvert/speaker, extrovert

Kerry-Edwards would be an unbeatable ticket, IMO.

Fingers crossed here.
