Pelosi dumps on the dream ticket - AGAIN.

“Take it from me — that won’t be the ticket,” Pelosi said Thursday at her weekly press conference. Pressed for further explanation by a chorus of reporters shouting, “Why?” Pelosi declined to elaborate.

“Do you want me to go through a lifetime of political gut?” said Pelosi, who grew up in an intensely political family in Baltimore. “I do think we’ll have a dream team — it just won’t be those two names.”

I am so sick of these stupid one-liner posts with no reason, argument, fact, or anything to back them up. There's a whole host of reasons why it's not happening, and frankly I think it's better leadership to acknowledge reality - we need a strong candidate that picks their own VP, rather than two candidates clinging to each other in an uncomfortable coalition, which is going to have the words 'tension' and 'backstabbing' attached to it from the word go.

One of the great surprises of my first presidential campaign, back in 1960, came on the final morning of the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles. Cecil Holland, a colleague at the old Washington Star, burst into our workspace, having discovered from his sources that Lyndon B. Johnson had just accepted John F. Kennedy's offer of the vice presidential nomination.

Barely 48 hours earlier, Kennedy and Johnson had tangled in a spirited debate before the Massachusetts and Texas delegations, continuing a fight that had started years before on the Senate floor and had wound through that whole spring and summer. At times, it got really nasty, with India Edwards, a Johnson supporter, peddling the rumor (which later turned out to be true) that Kennedy was suffering from Addison's disease.

Ever since, it has always seemed the better course of wisdom not to dismiss the possibility of rivals for the presidency ending up on the same ticket. It happened just four years ago, when John Kerry chose John Edwards as his running mate.

There's no way, not after this acrimonious a primary campaign, that Clinton and Obama form a dream ticket. I'll be impressed if the loser actually goes out and campaigns for the winner, and frankly I think that the best we'll get is a good concession speech urging the loser's supporters to back the winner, a firm handshake and an onstage hug. But a dream ticket, no way in hell.
