Mississippi Voting
As the returns come in tonight, set aside the spin for a moment or two and remember these men.

Andrew Goodman
James Chaney
Michael Schwerner

On June 20, twenty-year-old Andrew Goodman, a white student at Queens College in New York City, James Chaney, a black twenty-one year old from Meridian, Mississippi, and Michael Schwerner, a white twenty-four year old from Brooklyn, New York, finished training and headed for Mississippi. Their first assignment was to investigate the burning of a church located in a town near Philadelphia, Mississippi. Before they could even begin working on their assignment, the three men vanished.

This rises above so much of the partisanship; you are so right to point it out. I came online tonight and had missed your post from earlier.

13. Those three names are new to me
I grew up in Europe and don't know many of the details of US history.
But those three young men are my brothers, and I weep for them and all the others tonight.

Thank you, soleft, Jen and everyone here for your commitment.

14. I grew up miles from there
When I grew up, I would drive through Mississippi but never get caught there at night. Not a safe thing at all.

And now--it's hard to believe.
