Amateur Hour hits Kerry's campaign -National Service
First Kerry runs away from the AmeriCorps name that President Clinton gave to a method for young people to earn money to go to college, and then Kerry comes up with the same term that Israel uses for the DRAFT.

IMHO, Predictions of things to come

Maybe as soon as tonight's Press Conference Bush will target Kerry for supporting the draft through his National Service for young people. If not tonight, then within 2 weeks in California and other places with large student bodies Rove will release ads saying Kerry wants to restart the DRAFT.

Then poor old Kerry will have to spend $10-$15 million on new ads trying to explain his National Service is unlike Israel's National Service and does not include the DRAFT.

All because he did not want to use the name President Clinton used for this program.

Kerry's campaign can not be an Amateur Hour campaign

3. that's a stretch, imo
if it's not a draft, it's going to be hard for even the republicans to make people think it is.

7. They're Republicans.
They'll repeat it ad nauseum until people think its true. They've vaulted worse lies into conventional wisdom. For example:

-Dukakis wants to let murderers roam free.
-Clinton did (insert almost anything here)
- Max Cleland hates America

10. Right they are Republicans and they will twist the facts
anyway they can. But in this case Kerry made it easier for them to have an issue that should be his against Bush.

4. Get it straight, Israel has no draft
Compulsory military service is not a draft.

And under certain circumstances, compulsory military service is not a bad thing.

Some of the circumstances would be: everyone goes regardless of social standing or family connections, no soldier is to go into combat without a 2/3rds approval vote of the Congress and a clear written exit plan is submitted by the president.

6. the plan has been out there for months, before primaries
kerry had been campaigning for months calling it a national service plan and it didn't hurt him. the only ones who have a problem with the name are those who are looking for something to attack kerry on.

13. Don't think so. Voluntary national service is viewed very favorably
Edited on Tue Apr-13-04 02:24 PM by jpgray
Probably, like all the primary campaigns, they did some focus groups on the names and particulars. So your representation in said group was perhaps less important or fairly nonexistent? ;-)

I don't think there are racial/cultural divisions on what 'national service' means among resident citizens of this country. You could say an Israeli-expatriate might interpret it incorrectly, but even then we have a tradition of national service that has nothing whatever to do with a draft.

20. Because all Jews think the same?
Did you consider the possibility that the people responding to you are Jews, and that the words "National Service Plan" makes them think of a "National Service Plan", and not a draft. Or is it impossible for a Jew to disagree with you?

23. Sure. We call a draft a 'draft' in the US
Edited on Tue Apr-13-04 03:00 PM by jpgray
All citizens excepting very new citizens from countries with conscription should be aware that 'national service' isn't limited to military conscription. Their race or religion shouldn't really have anything to do with that--most have probably heard JFK's famous quote speaking of national service, and I doubt many thought of a draft.

34. Umm...
Rove is too fucking SMART to call this plan a draft. It's not even CLOSE to a draft. Your argument is that because the name is the same as something used in the Israeli army, that a) that will have some resonance with Americans and b) that anybody who TRIED to make that connection wouldn't be laughed out of politics.

Your argument is nuts. I suspect you know it is, but are trying to stir up shit.

You REALLY think he would portray a totally voluntary, civilian program as a "draft"? Do you REALLY think the Republicans are the ones who want to raise the specter of a draft? Do you REALLY think people are so fucking stupid they'll confuse the Israeli Army with Kerry's plan?

Yes... time will tell whether somebody who makes such ridiculously stupid assertions will be around here much longer.

I guess my Jewish friend is odd then he said well at least it sounds better than Americorps especially since Kerry was talking about multiple approaches and programs for service to the nation.

Probably be good is this mandatory for non-military service to instill a sense of community he said. He also said that would too unpopular a stance for candidate.

Oh well....
