21. Which Part Was Stupid?
IWR? Support of NAFTA and permanent "almost-free" trade status for China? Voting for the first bankruptcy bill? Voting for both "Patriot" acts?

are so happy right?

30. And Obama did NOT vote against the IWR, as he's led many to think.

He wasn't in the Senate then to vote on it. Considering that 99 our of 100 Senators were convinced that it was right to send inspectors in to look for WMD and voted for IWR, I think Obama would have voted for it, too, if he had been in the Senate then.

Only Senator Graham of Florida voted against the IWR, along with a small group of members of the House, including Dennis Kucinich and probably all or most of the Black Congressional Caucus.

Which brings up a question: why is Obama not a member of the BCC? Would the BCC not invite a black Senator to join the group? I know Sen. Paul Wellstone was a member of the Progressive Congressional Caucus, thought that any caucus could include members from both houses of Congress. I looked up the membership of the BCC the other day and Obama does not belong.

11. Why does it matter? Obama and his supporters have opened their arms to current Rethugs.
Edited on Sat Mar-08-08 08:29 PM by xultar
So if you can welcome a rethug who is still a rethug and calls themselves a rethug TODAY.

Why do you give a rats ass about a person who was a rethug back 40 years ago?

Republicans for Obama get huge props around here.

You might want to read John Dean's book Conservatives Without Conscience. I found it illuminating. You may too.

14. Yes. From wiki:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hillary_Clinton

Raised in a politically conservative household,<14> at age thirteen she helped canvass South Side Chicago following the very close 1960 U.S. presidential election, finding evidence of electoral fraud against Republican candidate Richard Nixon,<15> and volunteered for Republican candidate Barry Goldwater in the U.S. presidential election of 1964.<16> Her early political development was shaped most strongly by her energizing high school history teacher, who got her to read Goldwater's classic The Conscience of a Conservative<17> and who was, like her father, a fervent anti-communist, and by her Methodist youth minister, like her mother concerned with issues of social justice; with the minister she saw and met civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. in Chicago in 1962.<18><14>

College

In 1965, Rodham enrolled in Wellesley College, where she majored in political science.<19> She served as president of the Rockefeller Republican-oriented<20> Wellesley Young Republicans organization during her freshman year<21><22> and with them supported the elections of John Lindsay and Edward Brooke.<23>

Get your facts straight. She was radicalized by the war in Viet Nam, as many of us were.

23. Her parents were Republicans and she was

a Goldwater Girl in 1964 (fall of her senior year of high school) and president of Young Republicans her freshman year at Wellesley (1965-66.)

After that, she moved far to the left, while still in college. She met Bill Clinton in law school.

She's more of a centrist now but more progressive than Obama, who has convinced a lot of people he voted against the IWR when he wasn't even part of the Senate then! I think, based on the fact the 99 out of 100 Senators voted "Yes," that Obama would have done the same if he had been in the Senate then.

In 2002, Obama made one anti-war speech at a rally in Chicago.

During his campaign for the Senate in 2004, Obama said his position on the war was basically the same as George Bush's. The war was fairly popular then, with people believing Saddam was behind 9/11 and had WMD, so Obama became pro-war to get their votes.

I'm far more concerned about Obama's willingness to lie about his record than about Clinton being a Republican back before she could vote.
(18 year-olds did not have the vote then, so she voted for the first time in 1968, as I did. At least, I think she turned 21 early enough in the fall to vote, she may have had to wait until 1972.)

28. Yes, it's no secret
Her dad was a Republican, she was raised with that. In her younger days, she was a "Goldwater girl".

Honestly, though, I can't hold that against her. What matters isn't what she believed as a young woman, but what she believes now. For me, that's where she seems to be falling off now, and now is what matters, you know?

33. Have you changed since you were 18? Because Hillary Rodham was 18 when

she was a Young Republican. It's not surprising for people to initially support their parents' political views and then develop different ones.

She changed politically years before she met Bill Clinton, by the way.
