Here's the official story, folks!

PMO: Canadian officials only got briefing from Obama campaign - not Clinton

OTTAWA — Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton never gave Canada any secret assurances about the future of NAFTA such as those allegedly offered by Barack Obama's campaign, Prime Minister Stephen Harper's office said Friday.

With the NAFTA affair swirling over the U.S. election and Canadian officials skittish about saying anything else that might influence the race, it took the PMO two days to deliver the information.

Of course, it's a glaring example of how Canadians get treated to an entire hour of real, thoughtful news while we get a steady diet of true crime and the latest celebrity sweepstakes, but aside from that, I've enjoyed their lively coverage of this issue. I don't think I could ever live where I couldn't get Canadian news.

Canadian PM's Office: Hillary Camp Made No Backchannel Assurances on NAFTA

I'm starting to think that covering American politics is far easier than covering Canadian politics. But trying to cover the interplay between them both? A challenge of an entirely different magnitude.

This NAFTA story offers no easy answers, no obvious heroes, and a passel of possible villains pointing their fingers at each other.

Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton never gave Canada any secret assurances about the future of NAFTA such as those allegedly offered by Barack Obama's campaign, Prime Minister Stephen Harper's office said Friday.

With the NAFTA affair swirling over the U.S. election and Canadian officials skittish about saying anything else that might influence the race, it took the PMO two days to deliver the information.

After being asked whether Canadian officials asked for — or received — any briefings from a Clinton campaign representative outlining her plans on NAFTA, a spokeswoman for the prime minister offered a response Friday.

"The answer is no, they did not," said Harper spokeswoman Sandra Buckler.

That response will come as a relief to the Clinton campaign, which has angrily denied that it has engaged in the kind of double-talking hypocrisy of which it accuses Mr. Obama.

Canadian Embassy: Report On Obama And NAFTA Is False

Roy Norton, the minister of public affairs for the Canadian embassy, is flatly denying that any Obama campaign official spoke to the Canadian ambassador in recent days or told him that Obama's anti-NAFTA stump speech is merely "campaign rhetoric."

"No, none," Norton told me when I asked him if Michael Wilson, Canada's ambassador to the U.S., had spoken to any Obama advisers recently. He added: "Neither before the Ohio debate nor since has any presidential campaign called Ambassador Wilson about NAFTA."

Norton did allow, however, that the embassy on the staff level had discussed multiple issues, including NAFTA, with the Obama and Hillary campaigns at various times, and had urged them to look at NAFTA in a positive light.

40. Well......
none of us know and as certain as people are, it's all speculation. But Harper is a Canadian neocon. Like Shrub, his political philosophy is based in Leo Strauss' work -- not good. (Yes, I know that Shrub doesn't read or understand Strauss, but he can be the puppet for followers of Strauss....the neocons). I certainly wouldn't put it beyond him to throw monkey wrenches into the American elections, one that favor McCain.

Chief of Staff and nothing more. His office is under investigation for his Chief of Staff's actions and comments. The article in the link has this as well:

"Brodie does not deny downplaying the Democrats' anti-NAFTA rhetoric in a conversation with the television news station, but he says he cannot recall mentioning any specific presidential candidate."

"doesn't recall", we all know what those words mean if we remember Alberto Gonzales et al when asked for specifics on what they did and said.

I would not trust the word of Sandra Buckler as far as I could throw it, she is a political partisan. I have no doubt the opposition parties will not accept it either.

Sandra Buckler is the equivalent of Ari Flescher, etc, and should be found as credible as Bush's spokespersons have been.

Edited to add: This is Ms. Buckler at her best:

"In an e-mail to The Globe and Mail on Thursday, Prime Minister Stephen Harper's communications director, Sandra Buckler, said the military did not tell the government about the suspension.

Ms. Buckler called Friday to say she “misspoke” but would not say whether the military had or had not informed the government.

snip

Ms. Buckler, when asked Friday whether the military had informed the government that the transfer of prisoners to Afghan jails had been suspended in November, would not comment.

63. Someone needs to tell this to Randi Rhodes also...
She rambled on and on about how she had absolute proof showing Clinton was guilty. She also praised Keith Olbermann on how he did this story last night telling the world that Clinton did give these secret assurances to Canada on NAFTA. I can not believe our only trusted progressive advocates such as Randi, KO, Stephanie Miller, Ed Schultz, etc. are so blinded by the glow of Obama. We should never love any politician that much. They act as if they trust this man with their lives and I think that is a horrible mistake. We should be a team of Democrats who will hold these politicians responsible for advancing progressive values. Instead I see people who are putting another human being on a very tall pedestal. They will be sorely disappointed when he falls off that pedestal that he does not deserve. Thanks for posting this rodeodance. I will be sure to pass along this information. Peace.

'We should never love any politician that much. They act as if they trust this man with their lives and I think that is a horrible mistake.'

So well put.

The disturbing cult of personality at work here. I am truly puzzled and aghast at how many of these so-called liberal media people have seemed to have lost all their critical faculties. Arrogance follows closely behind. The supporters are in for a major let-down when reality strikes them in one form or another.

What the hell is happening to a large segment of supposedly rational people in this country?

And now, there are reports of threats of violence voiced by supporters if O doesn't get the nomination (did that not happen in '68, too?). VIOLENCE? From the so-called 'candidate of HOPE and CHANGE'?

Meet the 'new politics' - same as the 'old politics'.

72. Ya that is what the PM's office says but....
After investigating the story, a television news station reported the next day that the Clinton and Obama campaigns had both offered Canada assurances that they would leave NAFTA untouched. Both camps issued denials.

But Obama's campaign was further torpedoed by the leak of the diplomatic memo. Goolsbee insists the Canadian memo mischaracterized his position.

Harper has called in an investigation unit to find out who leaked the document to the American media - a probe that will see government employees interviewed and their electronic records searched.

But the opposition says that's not good enough.

They want Brodie fired or suspended for his alleged indiscretions.

And they want the Mounties called in to determine whether any security-of-information laws were broken - just like they were called in when a junior staffer at Environment Canada allegedly leaked climate-change documents to the media last year.

They are still investigating it. We will see what the truth is when the investigation is complete. Until then... who knows.

79. Why the fuck does anyone trust the Canadian Prime Minister's office?
Don't people know that Canada's current government is headed by a right winger, Harper?

Seriously people here are being tools. It's clear Bush and his foreign leader band of groupies like that other loser from Australia (thankfully that douchebag is out) have been trying to sink Obama's campaign. I personally think it's difficult for some of them to have to deal with a black man at such a high position. What a change that would be? A G-8 meeting with a black person doesn't sit completely well with them...Sure they've dealt with Condi and Powell but they knew Cheney was calling the shots anyways...

There's probably a lot more subtle racism from foreign leaders than you might imagine...

Clinton camp never briefed Ottawa, official says
CAMPBELL CLARK

With a report from The Canadian Press

March 8, 2008

OTTAWA -- The campaign of Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton never briefed Canadian officials on its position on NAFTA, unlike the team of rival Barack Obama, according to a spokesman for Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Mr. Obama's campaign has been hurt by leaks that indicated that his senior economic adviser gave Canadian diplomats a back-channel reassurance that his call for renegotiating the North American free-trade agreement was more political positioning than a real policy plan.

But the revelation that the initial leak to reporters from Mr. Harper's top aide, Ian Brodie, was that Ms. Clinton's campaign reassured Canadian diplomats that it was not serious about revamping NAFTA has led to questions about whether both Democratic campaigns had privately reassured Ottawa.

Mr. Harper's communications director, Sandra Buckler, said yesterday that Ms. Clinton's campaign did not brief Canadians on its NAFTA stand. "The answer is no, they did not," she said.

115.  Canadian Government is pro Hillary NAFTA
so they would want to smear Obama just in time for him to lose Ohio. This needs to be investigated by an impartial authority, not anybody associated with the Canadian goverment. My belief is that it was the Clinton campaign who told Canada not to worry about the anti-Nafta policy that she was espousing just to win Ohio, because it sounds just like Hillary's modus operandi - changing her policy to suit what could give her a win. She was always pro-NAFTA. Wouldn't be surprised if that is one of the things she worked on with Bill, that includes her 35 year experience record that she's always bragging about. Then they snared Obama's advisor to make it look as if he were the one who did it. Typical Hillary dirty tricks politics.

117. The day before TX, OH, VT, and RI
The Canadian embassy issued a retraction clearing Obama, and it showed up almost nowhere in the media. CNN (Wolf) briefly mentioned, but not enough to make it clear. The only place I saw it, in full, was on KO. Though I can't find it now, I saw that memo and BO has nothing to be concerned about there. Of course that didn't show up anywhere in the MSM anyway, and it cost BO Ohio.

In the original report, it was Obama AND CLINTON. That the MSM and CTV went after Obama on this speaks volumes to me.

The reason he didn't deny it outright from the beginning. He didn't want to be a liar about it. What's so bad about that?

You keep saying BO should apologize for calling Hillary out on attacking him for something that it turned out to be she was guilty of. How about Hillary IMMEDIATELY attacking Obama about it as soon as the news broke - she hasn't apologized for THAT. The only person saying she isn't guilty, is a fucking NEOCON TOOL, and you idiots are just eating it up. That asshole is doing nothing but trying to cover his own ass because of the investigation. But, hey, as long as it makes Hillary look good you'll buy a fucking NEOCON's word over our nominee (do the math, or did you fail math?).

Tools, all of you. Just keep buying anything that makes her look like anything but what she is. Even if it's from a NEOCON TOOL.

135. "BRIEFING" from the Clinton camp, no. Wink-wink NAFTA "ASSURANCES" from HRC, YES
Your own link in the OP (has anyone else actually read it) does not support the gravamen of your argument. Your OP appears to entail "Clintonian parsing" and false advertising.

I challenge you to persuade me otherwise.

From the link in the OP (at http://canadianpress.google.com/article/ALeqM5gNMJKvj5eQRQBNSeQj3bTyETSagQ -- read down):

"The revelations about Brodie's conversation with the television news station have left a key unanswered question that holds some implications for the U.S. election.

Sources who overheard that conversation say he specifically mentioned that Canadian diplomats did get ASSURANCES from the Clinton camp - and he never raised Obama's name."
