Good bye Democratic Underground.
I've really enjoyed being here over the years. There have been great discussions and Du'ers are quite informed. I like the bantering of ideas. Ideas are the way to come up with great solutions. Unfortunately, with the resignation of Samantha Power, it will probably prevent me from being a good citizen here. I hope many of you will not give up great causes. Please keep Sibel Edmonds in your thoughts and if any of you have an activist bent, please contact newspapers and people in Congress for justice. This is your country. Fight for it.

3. What a pathetic excuse for leaving DU.
You have to hand it to mmonk, it's a unique reason for martyrdom. But it's a truly crappy and useless excuse for leaving a discussion board.

If you're going to leave DU, just leave. Blaming it on the resignation of one of your heroes is self-pity taken to an extreme.

8. Someone just looking for a reason
Just like the voters who will not vote for a candidate because of a hair cut or they said something about the opponents family or because they are a woman or a black.

People and their idiotic reasons for actions is amazing.

7. Why were the SHAHEEN & other resignations O.K.? That said,
the bickering between our two great candidates is at the petty, ridiculous level, as opposed to the great issues the two AGREE on!1

9. The child calling the Emperor (or Empress) "naked!" is punished in today's Corporate Amerika.
Edited on Fri Mar-07-08 12:13 PM by TahitiNut
Never underestimate the power and reach of global corporatism. They frame the issues and control 80% of the information fed to the sheeple in the pastures called 'countries.' Even when that child says "off the record" there is no honor in the privateered global plutocracy.

14. You don't know what is meant by "off the record."
Edited on Fri Mar-07-08 12:29 PM by robcon
"Off the record" is an agreement beforehand between a speaker and a journalist. Both have to agree. You cannot add 'off the record' after the fact because you want to retract what you said. Elementary journalism.

15. Horseshit. 'The Scotsman' is part of the Murdoch empire. Murdoch supports Clinton.
Try paying attention to the (global corporatist) POWERS instead of just Power.

16. Try to pay attention to the story and the video, TahitiNut.
You wrote: "Even when that child (sic) says "off the record" there is no honor in the privateered global plutocracy."

There is only dishonor if a journalist agreed to keep a quote "off the record." There was no agreement to squelch what Power said because she apparently was embarrassed by it after she said it.

Try to keep your mind on the facts, rather than your preconceived notion of a media outlet. It is on video. She said it, and she can't un-say it. She fucked up, and was asked to resign. No problem with that.

Obama acted honorably by asking her to resign. The media acted honorably, since they had no agreement to keep what she said off the record. Power has to live with the remarks she made.

17. Show me there was "no agreement" ... and stop assuming.
Edited on Fri Mar-07-08 12:50 PM by TahitiNut
In none of the coverage is there any reputable claim that "off the record" remarks were fair game. Ms. Power is a Pulitzer Prize winner and I'll give her the benefit of ANY doubt vis a vis a Murdoch newspaper.

The fact that she resigned instead of pushing this through yet another news cycle merely CONFIRMS to me that she's focused and honorable. As a person of immense character, she had no other honorable choice.

25. She said "off the record" AFTER she called Clinton a monster.
If she had an agreement with the journalists to keep her remarks off the record, she wouldn't have needed to say it then. By claiming "off the record" right after she called Clinton a monster, she clearly revealed that, in desperation or embarrassment, she just wished she could expunge her remarks. She doesn't get to do that.

You really are grasping at straws, TahitiNut, when the speech is on video, not just printed in a "Murdoch newspaper." And your assumption that Power decided to resign, rather than being asked to resign by Obama's campaign, is questionable. I think she agreed to resign for the sake of the campaign, but I doubt it was her idea.

23. I quit posting here after the 2004 primaries......
and just lurk here occasionally now.

I witnessed not only the tomb stoning, but the self-expulsion of many great researchers and fair minded truth seekers that this site has never seen the likes of since.

I see this happening all over again. What a shame, what a waste.

Don't let the assholes drive you away. This is *your* forum too. Eventually, the crazies will leave. Until then, stay away from that insane place we called GD-P. Spend more time in the lounge, it seems like a nice place to hang out.. :)

I'm sorry to see Samantha Power go. She had been a great asset to the Obama campaign.

fill in the blank.

Why do people have to make this grand stand statement?

Why can't they just leave? Or better yet, just take a break.

Because you know, I was just thinking today, "damn, if mmonk leaves, I just don't know what I will honestly do????"

good lord, ego much?

Come back later

We can discuss, fight and say wrong things about our candidate's campaigns but we are not responsible for the actions of our candidates, or their surrogates.

You can be a good DU citizen. Just relax for a while.

We'll be fine.
