Once again, Californians lead the nation...I thought Hispanics were supposed to be socially conservative...They are the most supportive group...

1. Hispanics are in my experience a "live and let live" group.
I've not experienced racism with the hispanics I know, and I live in an apartment complex that is 90% Mexican (some are even illegals).

So this doesn't surprise me at all.

2. I'm In Florida
There's an anti-gay marriage amendment on the ballot... I'm hoping it doesn't pass...In Florida amendments needs a super majority or sixty percent of votes to pass...

8. I didn't know that about the amendment down there.
I thought it was a simple majority. That's why I thought it would likely pass. That's better news, then.

9. Floridians Voted For An Amendment That Amendments Needs Sixty Percent Majorities To Become Law
I was conflicted about that amendment but I'm happy it passed ...

10. It shouldn't be on any ballot at all
I will definitely vote no on this. BOTH my daughters are entitled to equal rights and to love and be with the person they so choose.

12. It Barely Got On The Ballot
I am far from a Bush or Crist fan but they tried to keep divisive amendments off the ballot like the anti affirmative action amendment and this one...

Florida relies on gay tourism...Why pick a fight when a fight isn't necessary...

Plus it's just wrong...

3. I don't see how this should even be an issue.
But then the "Greatest County on Earth" is also the most backward western country on earth.

7. Ha
Before the Lawrence V Texas ruling which was this century I was chatting with this Italian guy and he was blown away that you could be put in prison in America for consensual sodomy which broadly defined can even include heterosexual oral sex...

4. Sickening that this is still just a "near" majority
What part of "leave other people the fuck alone" is so hard for Americans to understand?

5. If the California Supreme Court reads the polls....
this is good news for the case before the Court right now. The timing of this survey couldn't be any better.

13. I don't share your optimism
first, a good justice wouldn't give a shit about polls.

But a near majority? Not good enough.

14. But The Trend Is Going In The Progressive Direction
Ten years from now there will be a solid majority in favor of gay marriage...

15. I don't know.
My take is that justices, be they on a state supreme court, or SCOTUS, do understand public attitudes. In a sense, I think that's what partly spurred the United States Supreme Court in their ruling of "Lawrence vs Texas". I think, partly, they saw that Americans didn't support sodomy laws anymore. And that they were redressing a bad decision, Bowers vs Hardwick.

I don't know. Hell, I read that 7 of the justices on the California Supreme Court were appointed by Republican governors. I wanted to cling to some sort of hope about this.

6. Actually no. MA leads the nation on this issue
and in Vermont a real majority supports gay marriage. Not to mention that Vermont was way ahead of CA on this issue.

16. There's another term that describes "near" majority....
Edited on Fri Mar-07-08 09:48 AM by scheming daemons
....

"minority".

Majority is a binary term... something that can either be or not be. There is no such thing as a "near majority" any more than there is such a thing as "almost pregnant".

It's either a majority, or it isn't. Please use the English language properly.

ON EDIT: I am in that "minority" that believes gays should be allowed to marry. But don't spin it. Until we actually HAVE a majority, then we're behind on the issue. Even in California.
