Sirota: The Blindness of Candidate (Hillary) Worship -- (OUCH!)

Over the last few days, I have received a bunch of email from Hillary Clinton supporters saying basically that I'm wrong that Hillary Clinton supported NAFTA, because David Gergen and Carl Bernstein have recently appered on television and said Hillary Clinton didn't support NAFTA.

It's very strange to me that people would take the third-hand word of two Washington insiders about what Hillary Clinton said, rather than looking at the first hand, from-the-mouth words of Clinton herself.

I really don't understand this. Here we have Clinton over the last decade repeatedly and publicly declaring her support for NAFTA. And yet, there are people out there who are so totally blinded by their worship of her candidacy, that they tell us to believe David Gergen and Carl Bernstein's assertions - even though Gergen and Bernstein's assertions are third-hand, include no actual direct, verifiable proof, and we have Clinton's own words to look at ourselves. I mean, Clinton's statements were not fuzzy - she repeatedly and very, very clearly trumpeted NAFTA as a great success, as recently as 2004.

Can someone please explain how people can become this blind?

band of hooligans beating on the doors in Florida during the attempted recount. I really am amazed by their willingness to embrace DLC, free-trade, the Iraq and Iran wars, cluster bombs, scorched earth political tactics and constant whining about how unfair the media are. I'm a feminist and there is nothing more disheartening than to see her supporters ready to throw away democratic principles for some idea that electing a woman--any woman--is more important than what she stands for. At least those who put Maggie Thatcher in power knew what she stood for and what they were getting.
