You know Ray Mabus? The one defending Barack in Mississippi?
The former governor of Mississippi?

Let me tell ya about this guy.

When Mabus' wife Julie went to her priest for counseling when the couple was having marital problems, Mabus taped her supposedly confidential session with her priest, and then used it against her in divorce court.

The guy is slime.

2. No. He's a sleezeball ex-governor who hates women.
So his attacks on Hillary completely fall in line with his history of the way he treats women. What he did to his own wife, the mother of his children, is indefensable.

127. Now, the REST of the story:
Edited on Thu Mar-06-08 10:02 PM by maryallen
Governor Ray Mabus was appointed as Ambassador to Saudi Arabia by WILLIAM JEFFERSON CLINTON in 1994.
Mabus went to Saudi Arabia unaccompanied by his wife, Julie, and their children.
When he returned two years later, he discovered that Julie was involved in an ongoing affair.

The priest was their Episcopal priest whom Mabus solicited for couples' counseling.
Mabus did tape record the meeting. It is not against the law in MS.
The counseling was unsuccessful and the couple divorced, with Ray Mabus receiving custody of the children. He (Mabus) eventually agreed to amend the arrangement in favor of joint custody.

Mabus is not terribly well-thought of in this state.

Clinton's Mississippi comment blasted
Her campaign downplays remark
By MICHAEL NEWSOM
mmnewsom@sunherald.com

JACKSON --
Sen. Barack Obama's supporters in Mississippi took Sen. Hillary Clinton to task Wednesday over comments she made about the Magnolia State while on the campaign trail last year.

But a Clinton campaign official said her words about Mississippi are being taken out of context.

The Capitol City was abuzz Wednesday as both former President Clinton and candidate Hillary Clinton announced they would visit the state this week in anticipation of Tuesday's presidential primary.

Not long before the announcement Wednesday that Hillary Clinton would attend a function in Canton today, former Democratic Gov. Ray Mabus and Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree met at Obama's Jackson campaign office for a quick press briefing on Clinton's remarks. While on the campaign trail this past October, Clinton told the Des Moines Register she was shocked that Iowa would be ranked with Mississippi in anything.

"I was shocked when I learned Iowa and Mississippi have never elected a woman governor, senator or member of Congress," Clinton told the paper. "There has got to be something at work here. How can Iowa be ranked with Mississippi? That's not the quality. That's not the communitarianism, that's not the openness I see in Iowa.'"

70. this the Lott connection and the apology from Hillary:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/20 ...

Lott Waits for Clinton's Apology and Gets One

By Mary Ann Akers And Paul Kane
Thursday, October 25, 2007; Page A23

It's a good thing she apologized, because Sen. Trent Lott (R-Miss.) was fixin' to give Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) a piece of his mind.

Lott was on the cusp of issuing a serious condemnation of the Democratic presidential front-runner for insulting the Magnolia State this week when his phone rang.

"To her credit, she called me and apologized," Lott told On the Hill.

Clinton chose wisely to make the quick apology after insulting Mississippians with a comment she made in an interview with Iowa's most important political reporter, the Des Moines Register's David Yepsen. Clinton was quoted expressing complete "shock" at learning that Iowa and Mississippi were the only states that have never elected a female governor or a female member of either chamber of Congress.

"How can Iowa be ranked with Mississippi?" she asked, implying the Hawkeye State is above such distinction. "That's not the quality. That's not the communitarianism, that's not the openness I see in Iowa."

Lott was furious when aides notified him of the put-down. He said he wanted to sound off right away but instead paused and waited to read the entire context of her remarks, something he said he has learned to do the hard way because of his own various guffaw-inducing statements over the years. (Those include not just his praise of the 1948 Dixiecrat presidential candidate Strom Thurmond, but also his comments after Clinton won her Senate race in 2000 that "maybe lightning will strike" her and she would die before getting sworn into the chamber.) "I understand that we sometimes say what we don't always mean to say," Lott said.

Still, he is a little disturbed that Clinton views Mississippi as politically sexist. He noted that the last two lieutenant governors have been women and that the first female jurist was recently appointed to the state's U.S. District Court.

Plus, Lott added, who is Clinton to talk? "Having lived in Arkansas, which is something of a whipping boy, too, she knows better than that," Lott said.

83. She had the affair, she threatened to turn his children against him
and it is Mabus that has no respect?

Did you mention anywhere in this thread or any of the others you have commented in about Mabus that Julie sued the minister and the state and the judge dismissed the action ruling:

Julie filed a motion requesting that Judge Delaughter recuse himself based upon the second-to-last paragraph of the court's order, which stated: "he Mabus children, two young girls, twelve and ten years of age, deserve some measure of privacy and this Court is not willing to even incidentally sacrifice that peace of mind upon the altar of their mother's vain pursuit of lucre."

And on appeal the MS Supreme court upheld the dismissal in toto (to include these comments of the trial judge).

In the end, the chancery court awarded sole legal custody of children to Mabus and joint physical custody to both parents. Mabus, the slime as you put it, is still their father and they don't deserve to have him dragged through the mud because of HRC's "stop at nothing to win" mentality.

Clinton's remarks insulted the women voters of Mississippi, too: I think they will remember that.

A state's value and record on women rest on more than the one criteria whether women served in office: by that standard all of our states were dreadful for the majority of the 20th century ... and our whole country is worse.

Wait, Sen. Clinton just implicitly insulted America and all its female voters. :rotfl: Not good!

145. Please go buy a dictionary, or at least a spell checker
If you're going to put in ALL CAPS, at least spell it correctly. You're embarassing your brainiac messiah.

The word you're looking for is "adulterous." Or perhaps "adultress." Who knows? Words matter. From someone who supports a candidate whose sole strength is making speeches, one would think you'd know that.

after learning more about this case and the adulterous wife and all, I think your thread is disingenuous, to say the least. Kinda backfired, it seems, you supporting an adulterer to try to slime one of Obama's supporters. You might want to rethink what you post in the future, you know, vet the story a little more. And, no, I do not defend his actions, as you're apt to play that game, too.

My gut reaction was correct. A link should've been provided so others could see the entire story before you made your hyperbolic claim.

divorces can get nasty. I'm sure some of Hillary's supporters have done some nasty things in a divorce, including you perhaps or people you know? Is that relevant? Of course not and neither is this.

Let's all get out of the business of flinging poo at politicians b/c of their personal lives. I don't care who slept with whom or whether so and so had a mistress or not. Let's be adults here, shall we?

She was to blame and she threatened to turn the children against him because she knew she was to blame - she went to the meeting trying to threaten him that if he tried for custody she would destroy him, she would turn his girls against him.

Is that what you think a good mother and a self respecting woman should do?

Case law in Mississippi has always been very clear, unless the mother is unfit to be a mother, if she is abusive, a drunkard, an addict or emotional unstable, the woman generally gets paramount custody. Even if she is gay or if she had an affair.

What Julie Mabus did, the way she behaved with such irrational hate and bent on destruction and emotional damage to the children is why she lost paramount custody. But she didn't loose full custody, they share custody.

What is so sad is that you are so hell bent on HRC being the better of the two candidates that you are allowing irrational hate and emotions to steer you, to control you. Do you know either of Mabus, can you truly be making the judgments you are making.

What does it do for women's rights to encourage a woman to use her children as a weapon against their father?

What will HRC do for women's rights in Mississippi? Will she give our democratic party back bone? Will she make them viable? You know as well as I do that our party leadership in this state sucks, they are wimps and most are DLC, not true democrats. Tell me, who was the last woman that our party supported for national office? How many women have sought national office? Is that our state's fault or is that our fault?

The irrational part is that you want to take a political fight and turn it personal against me. I would NEVER say such a thing to you...I would never criticize you for being "irrational," though I might think it.

Sorry about this, but I think it's best to avoid any additional conflicts that could have a damaging impact on our "friendship."

73. Googling this here's what I learned about Mabus: The Case of the Governor's Adulterous Wife
Law: The Case of the Governor's Adulterous Wife
July 03, 2002
by Kim

Julie had an affair....
...the former Governor wanted to save the marriage.

~snip~

In Mississippi, by the way, surreptitiously taping a conversation is not a crime.

~snip~

Decree
The court found in Mr. Mabus' favor. He also received full custody of the couple's two girls, although he has since allowed joint custody.

The fiery Julie Mabus (now Julie Hines) didn't forget her trusted religious advisor, the Rev. Jerry McBride. She sued him, his church and the Episcopal Diocese of Mississippi for clergy malpractice, breach of duty, fraud and negligence. In her lawsuit, she is seeking compensation for the mental anguish she says she suffered in losing her children and her Christian faith.

(She didn't sue the former Governor, her ex-husband, over the secret taping).

And her priest and her husband colluded to record the session.

It's sick that you think that anything she did would excuse the behavior of her husband and her priest.

If you were a Catholic, how'd you like it if your priest recorded your confession and handed them to the people you had wronged?

It's indefensible. You make yourself look like an ass by trying to find anything you can to excuse this...there's no excusing it.

I confided in him in confession once about a boss who was pressuring me (actually it was the Principal nun I worked for). He had me come to the rectory and we discussed it and then I found out the seal of confession was broken and he could go to the person and confront them. While I was glad for the help, I wondered if it was the right thing to do.....I got fired anyway in the end after she found out when he confronted her. Gee, I wonder, should I have sued?????

http://www.churchcentral.com/nw/s/template/Article.html/id/12606

JACKSON, Miss. -- Mississippi’s Supreme Court is expected to hear a case that questions a church’s responsibility for unethical behavior, according to The Clarion-Ledger.

Julie Mabus, the ex-wife of former Mississippi Gov. Ray Mabus, is suing St. James Episcopal Church and its former priest, Jerry McBride, for clergy malpractice, breach of duty, fraud and negligence. No trial date has been set.

The case is a test of whether confessions made to clergy members are subject to the same rules as the attorney-client privilege.

The suit alleges that McBride secretly taped Julie Mabus’ admission of an extramarital affair during a confessional, then used the tape in evidence at subsequent divorce and child custody hearings.

The church and McBride are claiming protection under the First Amendment, which prevents the government from intruding in church matters that do not deal with criminal issues. McBride also claims the taping took place during a marital counseling session rather than a private confessional, according to the newspaper

96. see, there is the proof....they said
it was during a marital counseling session....so, the seal of Confession was most likely broken. But, they don't tell you that. I found out the hard way. So, will she, most likely. But, then, this is the Episcopal Church and not the Catholic so I don't know how their rules work. I just know that unless you are in a confesional, it is all fair game...not just because it is a priest you are talking to. Most likely she will lose.

dismissing the lawsuit as the minister gave no spiritual counseling during the time in question, did not act as a minister, but a friend, and no scripture was read, no prayers offered.

¶ 15. A review of the transcript reveals no discussion of the Scriptures or religion and only one mention of God.(fn5) Rather, the conversation was explosive in that it was one man confronting his wife with knowledge of her purported infidelity without any notice to her as to what the arranged meeting was about, and this conversation took place in the presence of another man, who apparently had been through some sort of similar experience. The transcript does not reveal marital counseling by McBride, but rather a confrontation initiated by Ray in an effort to get his wife to admit to an adulterous affair. The wife, reacting to being "backed into a corner," lashed out at times and at other times pleaded that her husband not take the children away from her. Other than the fact that the third person present was a priest, there is no indication of any spiritual or other counseling occurring.

He was there as a friend and it was the exMrs Mabus that ranted and raved, threatened to turn the children against Mabus

A transcript of the recording of the 1998 meeting sets out Ms. Hines's acknowledgment of an affair and her threat to turn their children against Mr. Mabus.

''I hate you,'' she said to her husband. ''I hate you with my very soul. I will hate you till the day I die. And I will tell my children. I will tell my children.''

In the divorce proceedings that followed, a psychiatrist hired by Mr. Mabus referred repeatedly to this statement in recommending that Mr. Mabus be granted legal custody of their two daughters. The court accepted the recommendation, though the former couple have alternate custody of the girls, in six-month intervals.

The custody ruling was unusual, said Mr. Mabus's lawyer, Richard C. Roberts III. ''Down here it's a big deal for someone in Julie's position to lose the custody of two young children,'' he said.

One of the trial court's rulings "< t >he Mabus children, two young girls, twelve and ten years of age, deserve some measure of privacy and this Court is not willing to even incidentally sacrifice that peace of mind upon the altar of their mother's vain pursuit of lucre." Go check out the judge, you might remember his name - Alex Baldwin played him in the movie about the trial that convicted the man who murdered the civil rights leader. I think the movie was "Ghost of Mississippi".

Former Governor Mabus has paramount custody, but they share custody and the girls don't deserve to have their father "slimed" and their parents history dragged public and made national just to get HRC the nomination.

That it is even suggested is despicable.

108. What chance did she deserve Maddy.
She was the one that was threatening him with turning his children against him, she was the one that had the affair.

If she didn't want to take part in that meeting she should have left.

Most folks who are in the process of getting divorced are told by their lawyers to not have meetings of this sort and to not be surprised if their every communication with their soon to be ex are recorded.

Sliming the man isn't making any points in the equal rights movement. It truly isn't.

122. Actually, in 2004, when the case against the church was decided
it was a moderate court. It was much better then than it is now. Now it is stacked with defense oriented and conservative judges.

Relative to family law, our court is rather fair and normally, short of the mother being a habitual drunkard or druggie or whore or emotionally unbalanced, the woman maintains paramount custody. Our courts have been pretty consistent in that, they believe the mother should be allowed to mother unless remaining the mother would be detrimental to the children.

The tapes were used by a psychiatrist to determine ex Mrs Mabus's emotional stablitiy.

102. The real question is: Does the State of Mississippi recognize
A conversation between an Episcopalian minister and her/his parishioner as a priviledged communication?

(P.S. I know the answer, I just want to see if you do!)

126. HEY MADDIE!!!! DO YOU REMEMBER SANDY BERGER?????
Sandy Berger currently serves as a foreign policy adviser to Senator Hillary Clinton in her presidential campaign.

Let me tell you about this ass-hat.

Sandy Berger stole classified documents from the National Archives in Washington, D.C. Berger served as President Clinton's National Security Adviser and as such had special access to confidential archived documents---at least until he got caught sticking those classified documents in his socks.

In 2005, Berger pleaded GUILTY to unauthorized removal and retention of classified material. HILLARY CLINTON, makes really bad choices. She hired a CONVICT AS HER campaign's foreign policy adviser and voted for the IRAQ war.

Tell HILLARY that you're tired of her legacy of corruption, lies and cronyism.

VOTE TO MAKE OBAMA YOUR DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE SO WE CAN HAVE A PRESIDENT THAT WON'T DRAG US THROUGH FOUR YEARS OF SCANDAL AND BAD DECISIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Take 1 Volkswagen size pile of dung. Stick finger in and fling a little at opponent. Opponent retaliates resulting in both parties mired in said pile of dung. A single finger emerges from dung accompanied by shouts of, "Hillary's number one!". Everyone comes out covered in #%$@.
