Kerry should pick Rick Santorum for VP.
If he picked Santorum, we could lock up the vicious homophobe vote, and probably guarantee that PA would go blue. On an added note, he's only slightly more conservative than McCain, and since picking Republicans as running mates seems like such an 'interesting' idea here at DU, why not?

6. Why would it matter?
Winning seems to be the only consideration, for some folks. Do you know any especially repellent RW-ers who would draw some votes for us that haven't been mentioned yet? Feel free to add them to the "Dumbest idea EVER for a VP nominee" list, if you do...

5. Paddy, my sweet.
John Kerry is not going to pick a Republican running mate. I know you know this, and most DUers know it too. I don't know why people keep agitating for this "lock up the election" strategery, but it's a crock.

I like how you have no qualms about making your feelings known. Are you Irish or something? I'd hate to be with you in a pub if someone ever said, "Hey, why doesn't he pick McCain?" ;)

13. Some damned fool press report.
Edited on Sun Apr-04-04 10:05 AM by Padraig18
Some half-wit press whore with less common sense than free time mentioned it on TV, and it took on a life of its own, for some reason. It just boggles my mind that it would even be discussed in any serious manner on a progressive message board. :wtf:

21. Today's NYT: Apparently, some fools are still advocating McCain:
I wish this article had mentioned which "Democrats close to Mr. Kerry" are making these claims. I'd like to write to them and give them a piece of my mind if the paragraph below is not just some fantasy laden RW propaganda. I am a yellowdog Democrat. I have never, and will never, vote for a republican. IMO, picking a republican for a VP will sabotage the Democratic Party. What an insult. (Is this a NYT "Jayson Blair" type of article)?

Quick and Quiet Search to Fill the Democratic Ticket
By ADAM NAGOURNEY
Published: April 4, 2004

Democrats close to Mr. Kerry, including some advisers, said Senator John S. McCain, Republican of Arizona, remained a highly alluring choice. One adviser said that choice would almost guarantee Mr. Kerry's election. Mr. McCain, who like Mr. Kerry is a Vietnam veteran, has said he does not want to cross party lines to join a Kerry ticket, though some of Mr. Kerry's aides held out the hope of a personal entreaty by Mr. Kerry, outside Mr. Johnson's network.
