Kerry needs Pennsylvania if he is to unseat Bush

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. - Albert Herb and Bill Wilson, both 70-something, retired school principals and registered Republicans, aren't crazy about Sen. John Kerry, the presumptive Democratic nominee for president.

But neither are they excited about the prospect of a second term for President Bush.

Wilson, in fact, has already ruled out the GOP incumbent. He said his choice in the November election will be between voting for Kerry or not voting for president at all.

"One or the other," Wilson said firmly as he and Herb sipped coffee in the food court at Plymouth Meeting Mall here in the Philadelphia suburbs - a crucial battleground within one of a small number of states that are considered up for grabs this year.

There needs to be a huge GOTV effort in Philidelphia and Pittsburg if Kerry is to win the state.

1. We're swimming upstream
in Somerset County, but we're swimming hard. A lot of blind allegiance here.

3. We might be okay.
My mother-in-law just spent two weeks with us. She's from the central part of PA, about an hour west of State College. This is traditionally a very conservative area, or so I'm told. She told me that everyone she talks to hates Bush and can't wait to vote him out of office. They don't know much about Kerry and don't have much of an opinion about him, but they absolutely hate Bush.

I should say that she is not very political. She's not out there trying to convert anyone. I find that even more encouraging that non-political people are talking this way.
