Civics question please --

Since McCain now has the nomination I'll use him as the example for my question. Hypothetically, what would happen if for some reason he became incapacitated by health or death before the general election? How would the party then choose their candidate?
Just curious about the process. Thanks.

1. The party picks a new one however they wish

I don't know the Republican Party rules on how they do it, but probably a decision by a select group.

(A good reason for super delegates, I guess.)

2. and that select group is generally the delegates.

This is part of why one votes for a slate of delegates as well as the candidate that they are committed to in a primary.
