Voter Registration Strategies--How you and I can register 1000 new voters!
My New Years resolution is to get 1000 new voters registered by the 2004 election. I don't think it will be that hard to reach the goal and here is how I intend to do it.

1. Collect over 1,000 voter registration forms via Internet and post office.

2. Begin handing them out at one locale a week, beginning sometime this month.
- Bus stops.
- Dive/slacker/goth pubs around town--try to end the repub domination of the white male vote.
- College campuses.
- Malls.
- Street corners.

3. Purchase used "newspaper vending boxes", paint them, fill them with registrations, and place them around town. Possibly adorn these with democraticunderground.com and buzzflash stickers.

4. Give people multiple registration forms and IMPLORE them to give them to their politically inactive relatives. Ask them to make every effort to get their whole family registered.

5. Other efforts in coordination with my own book tour in 2004, which will be very political.

6. Write a quick summary of how to do this from scratch, and pass it on to obviously motivated (awake) voters. Use this formula to encourage, conjole, and beg others to pledge to get 1,000 voters.

Suggestions? Ideas?

I am starting this next week and will update this as it becomes more delineated.

Like all of you, I am not messing around. This can work. I personally will focus on getting out the 50% who don't vote.

1. I hope to do this thru our PTO.
We are an inner city school and I think our PTO could make a dent.

2. Where do you live?
I'm in Austin, and recently became a volunteer deputy voter registrar. My SO signed up as well. We carry around our little voter registration packets and have the authority to sign folks up to vote. You have to be willing to hand-carry the registrations to the courthouse, but hey, I am!

Our resolution is to contact area high schools and ask for time to speak to their senior government classes. Any seniors who will be eligible to vote by 11-2004 ARE GETTING SIGNED UP! Especially in the underserved areas. We want to take the message to them that they DO have a say and the CAN make a difference.

I like your suggestions! Maybe we'll camp out at some local businesses who are left-leaning (Book People, Whole Foods), with permission, natch, and see who we scare up.

Happy 2004! The end of the chimp is near!

3. I live in Pittsburgh
great ideas!

I will keep those in mind. I like the High School idea very much and whole foods should work too.

Question--can't the newly registered voters mail them in? do they have to be hand delivered?

Still putting this together...but I've got to do it!

Good luck!

4. It's part of the deal
When you become a deputy registrar, you assume responsibility for making sure the registration is delivered. And, the person applying gets a receipt from me. Makes sure things are handled in a timely fashion, and has high accountability.

We just signed up, so I'll let you know how things progress.

Good luck!

5. Another good place
Go to your local food bank and talk to people. The ones in the food lines will be happy to vote next time. I did it one day and got 60 to fill in the forms, which I then mailed in myself (paid the postage, too).
