It's Monday! Where are my Rezko headlines?
A quick scan of both CNN.com and MSNBC.com show no sign of the Rezko trial being a big deal. CNN doesn't have any mention of it on either their politics or crime pages. MSNBC has it as the 8th story down on the Election 2008 page and a quick read of the article shows that Obama is not accused of any wrong doing in the trial and that he never provided any favors to Rezko.

But I'm sure the Hillbot Rezko fanatics can find a front page story about it somewhere. Maybe Drudge or Little Green Footballs can make them feel validated and important.

Or, maybe they can deal with the fact that the Rezko trial isn't that important to the Obama campaign.

Oh and deal with Hillary not being the next president while you're drinking that nice hot cup of reality this morning.

2. That may be
But if this were going to be the earth shaking trial that some predicted, you would think it would garner more than a back page byline. Some even promised this story would doom Obama tomorrow. It appears that won't be the case.

3. understatement of the week
idiotic OP

the degree to which everyone tries to determine the future by declaring their opinion to be fact is just astonishing

It matters not WHAT opinion one has of what this trial might or might not bring. It will be what it will be, and the effect will be what it will be. Then we will know.

It's like buying a lottery ticket and then arguing over whether your number is going to come up.

"It can't POSSIBLY come up, because my second cousin's mistress died her hair!"

"It is definitely gonna come up, cause it's raining in Baluchistan!"

4. There is a reasonable hesitation not to overtly attempt to influence the race.
The Rezko thing has been well-publicized, if there's news there, I'm sure it will get reported, but no one's going to make a big deal out of it on the eve of the election unless it becomes clear that Obama has something to worry about, and that hasn't happened, and probably won't.

But it's not getting any significant national press.

BTW the Washington Post article is an editorial by Robert Novak, that one doesn't count.

17. When will you finally admit it's not a big deal as far as Obama is concerned?
If Fitz was interested in Obama, he would have indicted him, too. He hasn't even been subpoened to testify. If people were guilty just because they know people who have broken the law, the Clintons would be convicted felons.

I know it's not a big deal to anybody save Rezko himself. Just throwing it in the face of those who have been saying all weekend how today brings the end of Obama's candidacy.

18. Oh and a side note
From the Chigaco Sun times article as to WHY obama wont be brought up:

That same court filing makes reference to presidential contender U.S. Sen. Barack Obama. While Obama's involvement in the case will be minimal compared with the governor's, the prospect of his name being mentioned isn't a headache Obama needs -- especially on the eve of major primaries in Ohio and Texas on Tuesday. Prosecutors charge Rezko directed $10,000 from a kickback scheme into Obama's campaign fund. Obama isn't accused of wrongdoing, and he has since given that money to charity. An Obama reference at trial could be harmful to the defense, strategist Lisnek predicts: "If it comes in that Rezko was trying to take advantage of Obama -- that may not play well with a jury. "Obama's very positive. He's almost like Teflon right now. It could hurt the defense if jurors believe Rezko tried to sully his name and use him."

Not so with Blagojevich, Lisnek said: "Blagojevich has been so muddied."

Rezko trial may have far-reaching effects

Former political fundraiser Tony Rezko may be the man in court today as jury selection starts in his corruption trial, but there is little doubt that his court proceedings

are just as much about Illinois' current governor.

Whether Tony Rezko is found innocent or guilty will go a long way toward relieving or ratcheting up the pressure on his one-time bosom buddy, Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

And he's not the only politician with something to lose.

For Blagojevich, the glare of the spotlight flashed even brighter last week after U.S. District Judge Amy St. Eve removed any doubt that he is the "Public Official A"

identified in court papers as having benefited from the hundreds of thousands of dollars of campaign cash raised by Rezko.

Blagojevich, for his part, says it doesn't matter one whit what comes out of the trial; he himself did nothing wrong.

And indeed, government prosecutors have not charged Blagojevich with breaking any laws.

But at a minimum, a guilty finding in the trial would show that Blagojevich had the same type of pay-to-play shenanigans going on in his administration as that of

George Ryan, the former governor now in prison.

That is politically damaging -- if not devastating -- for someone who campaigned on cleaning up state government, even if Blagojevich had no idea it was going on,

experts say.

"I expect (the trial) to probably end the governor's career. … I don't think he can be re-elected," said Dick Simpson, a political science professor at University of Illinois

at Chicago.

But Blagojevich is not the only politician at risk from his trial. Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama, the freshman Illinois senator, has a lot to lose, even if

he's never accused of wrongdoing in the case, simply because of his past relationship with Rezko.

Obama has returned thousands of dollars that Rezko raised for his political fund. Obama also purchased a piece of land next to his Chicago home from Rezko -- a

deal that's been a point of sharp criticism against Obama, who has said he never did any favors for Rezko in return.

And Chicago and Cook County

Just wait until exactly 9:32 AM eastern. The news moment will happen and gobble up the daytime coverage with a passing nod in the evening. It may not be Rezco, but it will get mentioned.
