Does Kerry have a chance in Colorado?
Edited on Sat Mar-27-04 10:27 PM by fujiyama
I know this state is pretty heavilly republican and I also know that Clinton won it in '92 by five points (with Perot getting 23%). Also Gore lost the state by around 8 points, but Nader had 5.

There was however one poll showing the state to be within four points and this was a recent poll. Also Kerry was born in the state. I don't know if that would really matter though.

So, should the state be written off or is there any possibility? Nine electoral votes sure would help.

4. he should try fighting for it, if not in 2004, maybe 2008
democrats should try, even if he doesn't win the state this time, if it's close then it could help democrats in other statewide races, especially senate, and it might give us a chance of winning the state in the future.

6. Well, I'm going to be doing what I can
to ensure that Kerry has a chance here in Colorado.

I am not an experienced political activist, but I intend to work with the party doing whatever I can to help.

I think we could have a shot this year. Last time it would have been much closer if the Nader voters had gone with Gore. (I should know, I was one.) This year I think most of them will go with Kerry.

I think there are alot of unhappy Republicans this year as well. I've spoken with at least one of them.

We'll do the best we can.

7. it's a swingstate, so yes
Colorado actually has a strong progressive community. If Kerry can get them to work for him to turnout certain groups, such as the growing hispanic population, he has a better shot.

9. Ummm, we "progressives" have been pretty much dismissed here
We've been blatantly told to our faces that we aren't needed.

The party can do just fine without us.

When people are told stuff like that.....

14. Really?
You don't think Ken Salazar is a progressive? Have you looked at his record on the environment? The man is a hell of a lot more liberal than most people realize. He's a good guy. I'm sorry you don't feel needed, because he most certainly needs you.

15. I don't know if you're replying to me
Because I didn't mention Ken Salazar at all. ?? I said nothing about him.

What I said is that we progressives have been dismissed here on DU, and actually told in pretty nasty terms that we aren't needed, and to leave the party alone. It has been in numerous threads, so I'm rather surprised you haven't seen it.

Yes, I know that candidates need us. But, if we're going to be dismissed, then....

If you think we are needed, then maybe it would be a good idea to speak up in our behalf when we are being dissed.

16. I thought you were referring to Colorado Politics
not DU. I'll stay out of your fight with the DU. I consider myself a progressive and I don't feel I have been dismissed. I respect your right to disagree.

8. Yes, but it will be a challenge.
Clinton didn't win it in 1996, but it is within reach.

10. I'd say he's got a good shot.
Remember we've also got an excited progressive base here, what with the senate and governor's races... I suspect CO will experience a low far-right turnout -- since the candidates aren't really playing any of the traditional hot-button topics right now -- and a high progressive turnout.

Few of the right-wing ranchers and farmers I've spoken to are particularly excited about either Bush or any of the GOP candidates for the state races. I think this rectangular state might surprise you in November. :)

12. With a targeted senate race, yes.
National money is going to pour in with the senate race recently becoming an open seat. Kerry can take this.

13. Yes and no
If Kerry starts to pull ahead, then Colorado will definitely become a swing state. At the moment, it probably isn't one. But Kerry still needs to campaign there, first to help Salazar out, and second, so he'll be able to go all out in the event that the race changes.
