Poll question: Who thinks it's time to bury the hatchets?
There was a fair amount of animosity between various and sundry camps here at DU during the primary (Kerry/Dean, Clark/Edwards, etc.), but our nominee is now known, and history will judge how this came to be. That said, who thinks it's time for ALL the camps to 'bury the hatchet' (NOT in each other, btw :P ), and get on with the business of figuring out how we're going to evict those squatters from the People's House?

:)

1. Other! The fact that it has to be said
by now is maddening!

Ok, I lied. I actually voted "I'm There." But still, I'm incredibly discouraged that there still are folks out there swinging the hatchet wildly.

2. It's about time
I have for the most part. I have fully supported Kerry and will continue to only talk positive about him and his campiagn.

I decided this about a few weeks after Dean dropped. I am very proud of Dean helping Kerry and if Dean thinks enough of Kerry to really get out and support him than there is no need for me to hold any grudge against Kerry. We need to beat the shrub.

I do, however, still dislike those who attack Dean and lately I've been paying them no mind but sometimes I have to throw my opinion in. But I'm getting better.

5. Oh, I understand-- trust me.
There are some individual posters here I will probably never respect, simply because of the absolute vitriol contained in their postings during the campaign; that said, I'm fully behind Kerry, and will bust my arse to see that's he becomes our next President. :)

7. Being able to separate the candidate and the candidate's supporters
If people can't do this, they have issues with reality.

I never disguised my contempt for Kerry but in 2004, he will be my President.

9. There's no need to bash anymore
And that goes for all the candidates current and former. I think lately I am getting more upset at the people who are bashing Kerry than at those who are bashing Dean.

For those who don't know, I wasn't ever very fond of Kerry even up to the last few months but now that he is our nominee we really need to support. Yes, there are some things I may disagree with but he is 1 million and behind times better than shrub.

8. I think the hatchets should stay out and sharpened
and be used vigorously, at least until a running mate has been chosen, and for awhile longer after that, since many people will be deeply unhappy about that choice, and will need time, either to come to terms with it, or to appropriately rub other peoples noses in it.:P

After that, the hatchets should go into storage, at least until the November election. Then they should come out again if Kerry doesn't win, when we should all whack each other over the heads with recriminations, and "I told you so's".:7

Sorry to be such a cynic, but I think it is the only realistic scenario for what will actually happen here.

11. OK, here's my very reasonable proposal for a cease-fire.
  • Everyone shall herewith acknowledge that the nomination of a pro-war Democrat is a complete disgrace, & that Democrats in general do not deserve to be regarded as a real "opposition party."

  • Mr. Kerry shall be regarded as a lousy shameful badly compromised candidate, whose only legitimate claim to popular support is that he's the lesser evil. Herunder, it shall be acknowledged, without further protestation, that Kerry's contortions attempting to justify his shameful IWR vote for the past year were nothing more than lies and verbal gymnastics aimed at playing both sides of the fence simultaneously.

  • Everyone further acknowledges that Kerry's stunts from this week (trying to out-Bush Bush from the right on Haiti, Spain & Venezuela; and kissing up to corporations with his "tax plan") are nauseating, and call into question the margin by which he is supposedly the lesser evil.

There. That's not too much to ask, is it? O8) O8)

    15. I thought we were done with the loyalty oath crap?
Bottom line is this: I live in a reasonably "safe" state where I probably won't have to vote at all, but I likely will just to insure the removal of Bush. Therefore I will vote against Bush using the most effective means currently possible. Interpret that how you will, but the conclusion is obvious. (Hint for the clueless: It ain't Ralphie!)

I will not say I support John Kerry, nor will I say I support a platform written by the DLC and corporate whores like Maria Cantwell (there's a vote I really regret), because I DON'T. I'm neither a liar, nor a hypocrite, and frankly the entire way this primary was done was complete BULLSHIT, and even those who are and were Kerry supporters from the beginning know damn well that's the fact. Hey, if my guy won through someone else's underhanded sleazy tricks, I wouldn't want to believe it either.

I'm not pissed because Dean got screwed. I'm pissed because millions of people, the majority of the Democratic party will once again have no representation in the process. The DLC agenda might be slightly more tolerable than Bush's agenda, but that doesn't mean we should pretend it's good enough.

And I have a feeling the choice of running mate will reinforce the DLC/PNAC stranglehold on the party. If Kerry actually picked a progressive running mate, I'd applaud him for making at least one move in the right direction. God knows he hasn't done much of that in the last 3 1/2 years.

    18. Its not a 'loyalty oath'.
It's an exhortation to cease the juvenile histrionics/'hissy fits' that are little more than 'sour grapes' from certain supporters of candidates other than Sen. Kerry. :)

    17. I thought the "No, it's not quite time yet" choice looked kind of lonesome
so I gave it a hit.

I don't actually hold a great deal of animosity toward anyone, just a fair amount of disgust. And I don't want those people with whom I'm disgusted in control of my party, any more than I want the neocons with whom I'm disgusted in control of my country.

So I'll be swinging my hatchet at those people (both types noted above) until they're out of power, however long that takes. And then I'll cheerfully put the hatchet down, because as long as they stop dominating my party and my country live and let live sounds like a good plan to me.

Now, if I see progress toward that end within the party, and evidence of a return to more traditional Democratic values, before November, I'll gladly start skipping some swings and take time out to vote, and even get out other votes, for Kerry. Otherwise, I'll just swing away until a better opportunity to prune the tree presents itself.

    - bill

    22. I am already supporting Kerry...
    To the tune of $1000.

That said, my opinion of many of the posters in the D.U. really could not go much lower. I find it easier to read the news on the Free Republic. Those people are supposed to be crazed, but compared to the flaming idiot partisans we have in the D.U. - many of whom seem to be walking unintentional advertisements for the GOP - they're often quite tame.

Well, I guess Kerry can't get picky about his supporters. He needs 'em all.
