Obama gets 'offensive' on outsourcing
2/27/2008 12:17:12 PM

Obama may be emerging more popular by the day in the US, but his anti-outsourcing comments are not endearing him to India.

He now says that while America cannot "shy away" from globalisation, it would have to take measures to ensure that jobs are not shipped overseas.

At a debate with rival Hillary Clinton in Ohio, the all-important state scheduled to hold primaries on the 4th of March, Obama said, "We have to stop providing tax breaks for companies that are shipping jobs overseas and give those tax breaks to companies that are investing here in the United States of America."

This is not the first time Obama has blamed India for stealing Americans jobs. Only last week, speaking at another rally in Ohio, Obama had said, "We're here because there are workers in Youngstown, Ohio, who've watched job after job after job disappear because of bad trade deals....They need us to end those tax breaks that go to companies that ship jobs overseas.

Why isn't HRC getting "offensive on outsourcing?"

Also: I did not read anything in his speeches regarding "blaming India for stealing Americans jobs.....as India has accused him of.

Sounds like Indian wants "another" candidate."

Because Hill is DLC.

4. Yep. She's DLC. Bill was chairman for a while. The DLC supports open trade...even of jobs.
People really should look up the positions of the DLC. Hillary would lose a lot of support if they understood how very Republican most DLC beliefs are.

5. In March 2005 HIllary went to India and reassured them that she supported outsourcing
of good paying American jobs to their country. Search for Asia times article titled "Hillary Woos India" which was published in March 2005.

Tata was another pro-outsourcing Indian company that she celebrated.

3. India isn't "stealing" our jobs... they're being handed our jobs.
I'm glad to hear Obama speaking out about this now -- this has been one of my reservations about him because he's said in the past that he believes in free trade and doesn't have the best voting record on it (none of the top candidates did, though). So, I'm glad to see it looks like he is recognizing the importance of the issue and what's at stake.

13. It isn't just India. It's China, the Philippines, many countries.
All of our IT service is outsourced. It is just awful. I have to ask the service reps to repeat everything several times because I cannot understand what they apparently believe to be English.

Then there is the manufacturing sector. Jobs in manufacturing are just gone.

I recall hearing discussion in Congress in 1985 in which we were warned that if free trade agreements were entered into, Americans would end up with nothing to do but serve hamburger to each other. Well, the trade agreements were entered into and we are rapidly becoming a nation in which all we do is serve each other hamburgers. That will last until our export deficit results in our having to sell all our food to India and China. That seems an unlikely prospect until you think about the changes that have taken place in our job market since 1985.

6. Yeah, looks more like he's blaming "companies that are shipping jobs overseas"
but some people takes any anti-outsourcing talk as an attack on India.

Hillary actually has started talking about outsourcing, but only now that they're campaigning in Ohio.

There is need to think before writing or write with proper analysis in mind. See at what time is Hilary changing the gears. This explains why she has made u-turn. Almost down to Obama she changed her campagin manager, she has changed her stands on few other important issues. She has no choice but try every trick in trade to see if she can reverse the vote against her in many primaries. This is last chance for her. So dont be surprised if you hear her say things that she never said before or said exactly opposite. Hold on...world is not falling for every sentence spoken by any Senator in USA. Remember Bush is still president ...have faith in ourselves...India can determine its own course after these many years...please."

you are speaking of. This all looks very cut and dry to me. There are more IT jobs being sent overseas, by greedy US corporations, than all other country in the world. By penalizing corporations that outsource US jobs, India has the most to lose.

Why is everyone wasting their time replying to this clown? He obviously does not have any intellectual debate to offer here.

India is the #1 Outsourcing destination for US Corporations. Google is Your Friend.

N. Chandrababu Naidu, chief minister of India's southern Andhra Pradesh state, a top outsourcing destination for US corporations, recently met a group of visiting US congressmen in Hyderabad and urged them to defeat anti-outsourcing regulations.

18. You might credit the Reagan and Bush for India Outsourcing
You see reagan sold the country store to India to entice then to build big dams and other things in order to take the jobs to India, then the Bush administration was the first to try for NAFTA..then pushed it through under Clinton and bouth houses republican, Hillary Clinton and Obama are almot the same he just didn't have to handle both houses republican, and if we don't stop fighting , if Obama wins, and doesn't bring in democrats into both houses, he wan't be able to do any thing much and the same if Hillary wins and dosen't bring a dem, Congress and Senate.
