Nader Begins Push to Qualify for State Ballots
Wed Mar 24, 2004 01:43 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Ralph Nader's wild-card presidential bid is gearing up over the next few months for its biggest challenge -- navigating a maze of local regulations and roadblocks to qualify for the ballot in all 50 states.

Nader, whose third-party White House run in 2000 was blamed by many Democrats for helping elect President Bush, is hoping to collect 1.5 million signatures of registered voters on petitions for ballot access nationwide -- more than enough to ensure he will make Democrats nervous again this year.

"Our goal is to be on the ballot in all 50 states and we're pretty confident we can do it," said Nader spokesman Kevin Zeese, adding 7,000 volunteers have signed up nationwide to gather signatures for the independent bid.

1. He didn't even make all 50 ballots in 2000,
and then he had the Green Party organization behind him.

I would estimate that he might make 30-40 ballots, if even that many.

4. He doesn't need to be on all 50 ballots
to be a spoiler. Just a few closely contested key states where he gets 5 percent or so would do it, like Florida or New Hampshire. I think his candidacy is very frightening. His campaign slogan might as well be "Four More Years."

There were only a handful of states where Nader's vote exceeded the margin of victory, and they made all the difference.

I don't want to underestimate his importance in this election, but at the same time, I fear overestimating it.

7. Efficient, I'm not sure, fanatical yes, committed fringe leftists
determined to teach Democrats a lesson by pushing Bush into the White House.

Trouble is - it still won't work - it will only push Democrats further right.

22. Yeh, I dunno about "efficient." I remember 2000...
I was registered Green (I did vote for Gore, though), so I kept getting stuff from them. Not the most inspiring. I'm talking really amateurish sounding phone volunteers leaving messages like, the morning of the election. And people handing out leaflets in the subway; like that. Not too impressive. in fact, their inefficiency was a big part of the reason I got fed up with them and switched to Democrat--this was before it became clear just how badly Nader had scotched these past few years for the rest of us.

6. My advice to Nader and to Democratic Secretaries of State....
Edited on Wed Mar-24-04 06:52 PM by bluestateguy
I want to encourage Ralph Nader to spend as much time as possible in Texas, Georgia, Oklahoma, Indiana and North Carolina. Please set up shop there, and spend lots and lots of time campaigning there.

To Democratic Secretaries of State: Be the biggest hard asses you can possibly be under state law when those petitions get turned in. "Oops, this one is illegible, GONE!"; "Whoop, didn't dot the I, GONE!"; "Uh oh, didn't cross the T, GONE!"; "Oh dear, this one hasn't updated his address on the voter registration rolls, GONE!"

I'm all for playing by the law, but I'm also for being a hard ass.

214 signatures per volunteer by the deadline? That shouldn't be all that hard.

33. It's actually less than that.
I added up the requirements on another thread, and it was less than 800,000 valid sigs...you need maybe a third more than that, right? So that's about 1,100,000 total.

These guys think they are on a moral crusade for justice or somthing...

The days of attacking Democrats from the position of benevolent instigator or "doing us a favor" are over.

These guys are going top campaign against Kerry? What the hell is going ON??? These guys should be HELPING Democrats unite moderates & progressives, not working to divide us. The Right aint gonna be divided, I'll tell you that...

People who join the GOP & media in attacking Kerry are fools- and we will all be thinking even worse of Kerry's enemies if they actually pull it off and get Bush elected...

Edited on Wed Mar-24-04 11:46 PM by zulchzulu
I've thought about making a Nader signup table with Bush literature and a clipboard with a Bush/Cheney letterhead.

Maybe wear a Bush t-shirt as well. And of course, trash the signup sheets after the day is done. Maybe chant some Biblical quotes for good measure.

27. Nader's not as good as Dennis. People are upset with attacks on the left
He will probably get the dissatisfaction support rather than suport for himself. If he steals the vote this time, it's because the Democratic Party threw it away. People don't want to vote third party.

28. I think Nader and Kucinich are about the same.
Both have a weak connection with reality, both obtain fanatical support from people who will never have to back up their claims of purity with the messy business of actually having to govern, both put their ego above unity in the struggle against Bush.

Kucinich is, of course, nominally a Democrat, whereas Nader is a corporate classic doublespeak hypocritical Repuke, but other than that, I fail to see much difference between them.

31. He needs about 1,100,000 sigs total
to get the 800,000 valid sigs that he needs to get on all of the ballots.

1,100,000 divided by 7000 volunteers means about 158 sigs per volunteer. You think that can't be done?
