I haven't really thought about this until just now, but would there be any advantage, society-wise, to encouraging contributions with a tax break? Pros and cons? Anyone ever thought about this?
I vaguely recall deducting these on my earliest tax returns.
I think it was one of those tax breaks that Reagan eliminated (like income averaging, deducting local sales tax, the medical deduction) - the ones that an ordinary working person with no kids could take advantage of.
the ability to turn their already maxed out legalized bribes into tax savings.
just off the top of my head: maybe something along the lines of a tax CREDIT up to a $100 limit, which would be more apt to encourage the small donations from individuals.
